We are truly blessed to be able to practice our Catholic faith every day and share God s love with our students, staff and parent community. We are working towards making St. Richard an even more welcoming environment and want you to know that you are expected, respected and valued! Easter Celebration On April 6 th at 1:30 p.m., we will celebrate new life and the resurrected Christ at an Easter Reflection. Everyone is welcome to join us. 2 Climate Change Education Leadership at St. Richard Elementary On Wednesday, March 16, two St. Richard students, grandparent volunteer Therese Kuefler and Mr. Stuart, visited Queen Elizabeth High School to engage in conversation with Premier Notley, stakeholders and high school students from across Alberta about how schools show climate leadership. Amber Bantugan (Grade 5) and Eva Kuefler (Grade 6) where the only two elementary students present who got to share their ideas with educational stakeholders on the future direction of environmental education in Alberta. The best part was being able to shake Premier Notley s hand and hearing what she had to say about climate change. Eva The best part was sharing my ideas with other people to help prevent climate change from our school and reduce our energy consumption from non-renewable sources. Amber On that same day, St. Richard became the first school in ECSD to have a PV Solar System installed on its roof. At 5.5 kw it is also the largest on any school in Edmonton. Students and visitors to St. Richard will be able to see in real-time how much energy is being produced by each of the 24 modules at any given moment throughout the day via a web-based monitoring system. Inspired and driven by Pope Francis call to action on climate change as outlined in the Laudato Si, students are using the system as a springboard for climate change leadership initiatives. Grade 5 students will be hosting a Green Energy Fair in May and are starting a school-wide Energy Management Advocacy program within the school to encourage behavioural changes in students and staff to lower the school s carbon footprint and reduce our electricity bill. The PV system will also completely off-set electricity used by the Urban Agriculture Club and individual classrooms for indoor food farming projects. We would like to thank Enmax for donating much of the components needed for the project and to Great Canadian Solar for the design, permitting and installation. Our project is helping to trail blaze a path for bringing renewable energy and climate change education into school culture within both Edmonton Catholic Schools and schools across the province. Edmonton Oilers Octane Cheerleaders Visited St. Richard On Friday, March 18, members of the Edmonton Oilers Octane Cheerleaders visited St. Richard to teach cheers, share pom poms, and read to all the classes. The cheer leading visit was organized by Sabatini Moses, Mr. Stuart s student teacher. The Edmonton Oilers Octane Cheerleaders read to each class and taught our students a cheer. The Edmonton Oilers Octane Cheerleaders are very focused on community involvement and volunteering at schools! Thank you, Miss Moses! 2

3 Meet Our Student Teachers My name is Jonathan Whitton and I am currently in my first year of the Education After Degree Program at the University of Alberta. In 2010, I received a Bachelor of Commerce degree from The University of Guelph in Ontario and then spent the next 5 years living in Europe. During this time, I had the opportunity to work with a lot of kids and this was where I discovered the joys of teaching. I made the decision to move back to Edmonton to pursue a career in teaching elementary school and I am very excited about getting the chance to work with the incredible staff and students at St. Richard school. My name is Miss. Moses and I am student teaching in Mr. Stuart's Grade 5 classroom. I hope to expand my knowledge on how to educate children successfully. I am looking forward to learning and growing in various ways so that I can one day have the career that I am sincerely passionate about. It is most important for me to become a teacher who knows how to show my students that I care about their successes, their opinions, and their education. I have already fallen in love with the students and staff of St. Richard. It truly was through God's grace that I was lucky enough to be placed here! My name is Alessia Poulin and I'm thrilled to be completing my student teaching at St. Richards. I'll be teaching science, art, French and gym in grade 4 with Mr. Gagnon. I'm excited to learn from the students in my class, and I hope to have a positive impact on their time in elementary school. 4 Partners with Parents Wellness and Safety Information Series The District has just launched a new online series for parents. The Partners with Parents Wellness and Safety Information series will provide valuable information and helpful resources plus informative videos on a variety of topics of interest to parents and caregivers. The Board of Trustees asked our administration to develop a series of online information sessions for parents and the first topic in the series is Immunization Myths & Facts. Other upcoming topics are: Child Abuse Awareness & Prevention, How to Talk to Kids about Fentanyl & Other Drugs, and Nurturing Stress Hardiness & Resilience. A new segment will be posted on our District website each month until the end of June. The first topic has been posted so check out the series at The Leader in Me The next habit of the Leader in Me Program that we will be learning about is Habit #5 Habit 5 - Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood Listen Before You Talk I listen to other people s ideas and feelings. I try to see things from their viewpoints. I listen to others without interrupting. I am confident in voicing my ideas. I look people in the eyes when talking Outdoor Way of the Cross 4

5 Mathathon Coming Soon! Between April 29 and May 25th, we will be having a Math-A-Thon to allow the children to practice their math skills while raising funds that contribute to the many benefits our children are so blessed to receive at St. Richard School. Students in each grade will be given age appropriate math questions to study and a pledge envelope. The students will ask family members and close friends to pledge an amount per math question or a fixed amount pledge. Students are not allowed to go from door-to-door to collect pledges. Everyone from 100 Voices to Grade 6 will participate; everyone can win. All students will take the math test whether they collect pledges or not. Once the tests have been marked, the class with the highest average of funds raised will receive a PIZZA PARTY sponsored by our School Advisory Council. There are TWO GRAND PRIZES; one for students who raise minimum of $40.00 and second grand prize for students who score 100% on their math test. SCHEDULE OF DATES: Fri. April 29 Fri. May 6 Fri. May 13 Fri. May 20 Tues. May 24 Wed. May 25 Math-A-Thon Kick-Off Day. Math questions, pledge envelopes and parent volunteer requests are sent home. Students begin collecting pledges/question or fixed amount pled and begin studying for their math test. Cheques are made payable to St. Richard SAC. All parent volunteer forms indicating if parents can help with counting money are returned to school. All students write the math test and receive their score. Pledges are collected by the students and their parents. Pledge envelopes with the money are returned. ALL ENVELOPES MUST BE RETURNED EVEN IF UNUSED. Parent volunteers count the money and winners are determined. Winners are announced and prizes are awarded. Our mission is to be an effective service facilitator for seniors, we help them retain their lifestyle, sense of independence and well-being. We are looking for dedicated, enthusiastic and compassionate volunteers willing to donate their gift of time and make a difference in our community, helping seniors by being our community cares about seniors Volunteer. SSCAS needs volunteer drivers (gas expenses reimbursed), office assistance, board members and service providers (earn a little extra cash) for housekeeping, snow/yard, light maintenance etc. Your volunteer gift of time is tailored around your schedule.
