1 Introduction Cell analogy Project How do the structures and functions of a cell compare to the structures and functions of another real world system? Cells need to carry on the same basic functions as we do to sustain life; the difference is cells do this with much smaller parts. These smaller structures that allow the cell to function are called organelles tiny organs. It s only common sense that if you are able to relate things you learned in class to everyday things, you ll remember it better. It s not every day that you and your friends sit around at Starbucks discussing the rough endoplasmic reticulum. However, you probably do discuss things like cars, your homes, and places to visit, etc Therefore, your task in this assignment is to relate the different cell organelles to an everyday situation or thing using an analogy. Your Task To begin, you will first choose a real world working system that like a cell is self-sufficient and decide how each organelles of the eukaryotic cell can be compared to the components and functions of this real world system. It is best to choose a real world system that you understand well. Some ideas are: school, factory, hospital, city, mall, country, restaurant, lab, salon, construction site, prison, ballpark, etc. Then, you will create an analogy for a cell and its organelles by determining what component of your model is most like each organelle of the cell and explaining your reasoning. Consider how the cell must be able to interact with its surroundings, use energy, produce materials and manage waste. Finally, your analogy will be represented in the form of a poster that compares roles of 13 organelles to a part of the analogy. It should include neatly drawn images and should be colorful and show very high effort. Not artistic? Trace diagrams, make pictures on the computer get creative! Be sure that your project includes a label for what it actually is in real life and what it represents in the cell, and your reasoning why.

(A cell is like a because.) Think about what components use energy, produce substances and manage waste. Step 2: Complete the Cell Analogy Worksheet on the next page. Step 3: Make a rough draft of your cell analogy idea. You should include all 13 components listed on the Cell Analogy Worksheet and compare them to a plant cell. Step 4: Create your model in the form of a poster. It should be colorful, neat and creative. Step 5: Label your poster with the cell part and analogy. **Number each cell part as numbered on the Cell Analogy Worksheet. **Label each cell part with its organelle name. **Identify what each cell part is in the picture. Example: 1. Nucleus (City Hall) Step 6: Select a creative title with the word Cell in the title make sure your title stands out on the page. 5 Example for One Organelle: Cell City The nucleus of a cell is the main control center of the cell. It holds all of the information needed for the cell to function properly. Therefore, it is like city hall because this is where the information, policy and governing is done to run the city.
