3 How to Use This Application: Quick Tips for Getting Started 3 How to Use This Application Each week of the Daily Paragraph Editing interactive whiteboard application follows the same format, making it easy for both students and teachers to use. Teachers can use an electronic whiteboard or projection system to lead interactive class lessons, or one or more students can complete the activities on their own at a computer. Quick Tips for Getting Started Log in to Evan-Moor Portals and click on the icon for Daily Paragraph Editing. This will bring up the Available Units menu, where you can select Week 1 to begin. Then choose the word or activity you would like students to complete from the week s menu. Lesson History Title Resources Click on Quick launch next lesson to jump to the lesson that comes after the one you completed last. From the menu for the weekly unit, select a day from the left column, then click on the green checkmark in the right column to launch the lesson.

4 How to Use This Application: Quick Tips for Getting Started 4 To enable or disable the error counter, click on the Error Counter option at the top of the screen. This option increases the level of difficulty with each step.

5 Weekly Walk-Through: Monday through Thursday 5 Weekly Walk-Through The Daily Paragraph Editing interactive whiteboard application helps students master and retain grade-level language mechanics skills using 36 weeks of focused interactive lessons. Instead of practicing skills in a series of random exercises, students are asked to identify and correct mistakes in thematically and topically related paragraphs so they learn to apply language conventions within the context of cross-curricular reading and writing activities. Monday through Thursday Lessons Overview Each week s interactive lessons for Monday through Thursday consist of individual paragraphs that students are directed to correct on-screen through a whole-class or small-group lesson. Once students are familiar with the process for editing the daily paragraphs, they may also work on their own or with a partner at a computer. To begin a lesson, select Begin Lesson from the main menu and choose the week and day of the lesson you would like students to complete. Each lesson is divided into two steps. Lessons are presented on-screen with: A paragraph containing errors for students to correct Students correct the paragraph by dragging and dropping the correct proofreading marks into place. A Review Tool (Tuesday through Thursday lessons only) Clicking this displays the previous day s corrected paragraph to maintain continuity from day to day. An error counter The error counter, located in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen, displays how many errors remain to correct. Relevant proofreading marks For each mark, a definition and example to show or remind students how to mark corrections.

6 Weekly Walk-Through: Monday through Thursday Lessons 6 Monday through Thursday Correcting Sentence Punctuation In step 1, students are asked to focus only on correcting end punctuation and capitalization at the beginning of a sentence. 1. Before asking students to correct the paragraph, read the selection aloud just as it is written, including all the errors. 2. Read the paragraph a second time, using phrasing and intonation that would be appropriate if all end punctuation were correct. Read all other errors as they appear in the text. 3. Next, guide students in correcting all end punctuation and initial capital letters by dragging and dropping the correct marks from the menu into the paragraph. a Review the proofreading marks so students understand the meaning of each mark. Use the error counter to keep track of how many mistakes students have left to find. Use the Show Corrections button to reveal any mistakes that the students did not indentify. 4. After students have dragged and dropped all the corrections into place, click the Continue button to move on to step 2.

7 Weekly Walk-Through: Monday through Thursday Lessons 7 Monday through Thursday Lessons Making Additional Corrections In step 2, students are asked to reread the paragraph one sentence at a time, correcting any additional errors that they find. 1. First, review the new proofreading marks that have been added on-screen so students understand the meaning of each one. 2. Read the first sentence aloud just as it is written and have volunteers identify and correct errors as you come to them. 3. After students have identified and corrected all the errors in the first sentence, the Continue button will appear. Click the button to move on to the next sentence. 4. As the class corrects each sentence, encourage students to explain the reason for each correction. Explain or clarify any rules that are unfamiliar to them. 5. After the entire paragraph has been corrected, the Corrected Paragraph button will appear, so students can view the entire paragraph in its corrected form. The corrected paragraph will be displayed with all the corrections highlighted in green. Read the paragraph a final time.

8 Weekly Walk-Through: Friday Lessons 8 Monday through Thursday Lessons continued The Review Tool Tuesday through Thursday lessons also feature a Review Tool in the top right corner that displays the previous day s corrected paragraph. Use the Review Tool to review the previous day s paragraph before beginning each Tuesday through Thursday lesson, or as a way to reference skills covered throughout the week. Friday Lesson Friday s lesson consists of a writing activity. This gives students the opportunity to apply the skills they have practiced during the week and to gain experience writing in a wide variety of forms, with the support of familiar models. Friday s lesson includes: The Corrected Paragraphs from Monday through Thursday When corrected and read together, the four previous days paragraphs form a cohesive composition that serves as a writing model for the Friday lesson. The weekly compositions cover a broad range of expository and narrative writing forms including: nonfiction texts on grade-level topics in social studies and science biographies, book reviews, editorials, instructions, interviews, journal entries, and letters fables, fantasy and science fiction stories, historical fiction, personal narratives, and realistic fiction A Writing Prompt Each writing prompt directs students to write a composition modeled after or topically related to the previous days paragraphs. This gives students the opportunity to apply the skills they have practiced during the week and to gain experience writing in a wide variety of forms, always with the support of familiar examples.

9 Weekly Walk-Through: Friday Lesson 9 Friday Lesson Modeling and Writing a Composition 1. To begin a lesson, select Begin Lesson from the main menu and choose the week and the Friday lesson you would like students to complete. Students will see the corrected paragraphs from Monday through Thursday appearing as a completed composition. 2. Read the composition aloud and identify the type of writing as well as any of its special features (e.g. dialogue in a fictional narrative; salutation, closing, and paragraph style in a letter; opinion statements and supporting arguments in editorial; etc.). A box is provided to the right of the screen for writing notes. 3. After reviewing the weekly composition, click the Continue button to view the week s writing prompt. Each Friday writing prompt is presented on-screen with: the writing assignment for that week. hints to help students focus their ideas about the topic and use language skills that are specific to the writing form A Pre-writing Ideas box to help you brainstorm ideas with students. 4. After students complete their writing, encourage them to use what they ve learned to review or revise their work. You may also wish to have partners review each other s writing, for volunteers to read their completed writing to the class, or to display compositions on a weekly writing bulletin board for students to enjoy.
