3 Introduction This guide is for students coming from a different educational system to Spain s and for foreign students who are not residents in Spain, who want to enroll in any of Universidad Europea s Undergraduate, Graduate, Doctoral, and Advanced Career and Technical Education programs. All of these students are referred to as international students. The guide describes the simple steps to follow, from initial application through to enrollment, for students coming from education systems outside Spain. The procedure for applying to university in Spain, a member state of the European Union (EU), is different for students from the education systems of other member states (and countries which have reciprocal agreements with Spain) and for students from other education systems. The Prepare your trip to Spain section talks about the Student Card and the Foreign Resident Identity Number (NIE), which are applicable to all non-spanish students, while visas are required only for students who are not nationals or residents of European Union states, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein. This section also includes information on support services to help you prepare to travel to Spain. The Other useful information section tells you about the services Universidad Europea offers international students, such as language courses, as well as addresses you may need to know. The higher education system in Spain This diagram gives an overview of the Spanish higher education system: Baccalaureate or equivalent ADVANCED CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION (ACTE) 1-2 years ECTS BACHELOR S DEGREE (3-4 years) (*) (*) Some Bachelor s Degrees are longer, including Pharmacy, Dentistry and Medicine) MASTER S DEGREE ( ECTS) (1-2 years) PhD Programs 3-4 years Doctoral Dissertation Professional careers Finally, the Appendices include information on how to get your educational qualifications officially recognized, and on the Universidad Europea admissions procedure. As part of our personalized services for students, we provide addresses and phone numbers to help you with any questions you may have relating to this guide and its contents. Official qualifications and the European Higher Education Area These are qualifications compliant with the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). They consist of three cycles: Bachelor, Master and Doctorate. Both Bachelor s Degrees and Master s Degrees relate to the following areas of study: Arts and Humanities Science Health Sciences Social Sciences and Law Engineering and Architecture ECTS credits ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System) are the standard for all universities in the European Higher Education Area to ensure consistency across the different European education systems. ECTS credits are based on the student s own work in all the activities involved in the learning process (classroom hours, study hours, assignments, projects and internships). What is a Bachelor s Degree? Bachelor s Degrees (Grado) replace the Spanish qualifications Diplomado and Licenciado. With some exceptions, most involve ECTS credits over three or four academic years (including the Graduation Project). Some degrees such as Pharmacy, Medicine and Dentistry take longer. 4 5

4 Most Universidad Europea degrees are taught in three terms or trimesters per year (except for Medicine and Dentistry). This makes our courses more flexible and easier to adapt to the real needs of our students. Universidad Europea offers Bachelor s Degrees and Double Degrees in Spanish, English and in a bilingual format. They can be classroom based, semi-classroom based or 100% online. The Bachelor s degree is structured as follows: Basic core requirements (60 ECTS credits minimum) Degree requirements Required electives Internships (60 ECTS credits maximum) Graduation Project (6 to 30 ECTS credits) Recognition of university activities (6 ECTS credits maximum). Students must enroll for a minimum of nine credits and a maximum of 72 credits in each academic year. What is a Graduate Degree? Article 34.1 of Spain s University Act (Organic Law 6/2001, of 21 December) rules that Universities are authorized to provide teaching leading to the award of official qualifications valid throughout Spain, and teaching leading to the award of other qualifications. Master s Degree programs provide more specialized academic and professional training and research, and are structured into programs leading to the award of a Master s Degree. The University offers both certifying and specializing Master s Degree programs. All of them are officially recognized within the European Higher Education Area. Certifying Master s Degrees are advanced specialist qualifications enabling holders to perform professional activities that are regulated in Spain, and whose curriculum meets the conditions set by the Government for the profession in question. Specializing Master s Degrees are advanced educational qualifications which may be specialized or multidisciplinary, designed for academic or professional specialization or research in fields which do not require qualifications for professional activities that are regulated in Spain. Specializing Master s Degree programs may be Ordinary or Extended, according to students particular educational needs such as part-time study, or to suit the type of degree or any other circumstances the University may determine. Ordinary Master s Degrees: 60 ECTS credits. These courses take about one year. Extended Master s Degrees: 60 ECTS credits. These courses may take up to two consecutive years. Their scheduling is determined by the University (minimum 30 ECTS per academic year). In addition to these official qualifications, the University also offers its own qualifications (private Master s Degrees or Certificate courses). These courses are educational programs designed to develop skills, abilities, aptitudes, competencies and expertise, either as introductions to a professional field or for updating, improving or specializing professional or academic skills. What is a PhD? PhD or doctoral programs constitute access to what is known as the Third Cycle of official university studies, and form part of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and the European Research Area (ERA). Through the PhD programs, students, known as doctoral candidates, acquire the expertise and skills they need to become researchers capable of conducting high quality research projects. The PhD programs are designed to develop the different educational aspects of the doctoral candidates and establish the procedures and lines of research for conducting the research projects which will be their dissertation. Through its School of Doctoral Studies and Research, Universidad Europea de Madrid offers a range of PhD programs leading to the accredited Doctor s degree. Once admitted to their doctoral program, all doctoral candidates are given specific training and support. After enrollment, they are assigned a dissertation director and an advisor/mentor, both of whom will guide them throughout their research work during the course of the PhD program, advising them on how to prepare and write their dissertation. Before embarking on the research project itself, doctoral candidates must complete a 12-credit Training Module on scientific research methodology and procedures in the field of their chosen PhD program. These complementary training is delivered online via the Universidad Europea Campus Virtual, and is structured in four blocks: Scientific Methodology and Theory of Knowledge (3 ECTS) Information Processing (3 ECTS) Resources Associated with Research Activity (3 ECTS) Practicum (3 ECTS) During the admission process the student s academic record is studied and authenticated. This study will determine how many ECTS credits the future doctoral candidate must take of the total 12 of the Training Module. After completing the Training Module, doctoral candidates begin their research, at the end of which they will defend their dissertation before a panel. What is Advanced Career and Technical Education (ACTE)? Advanced Career and Technical Education (ACTE) programs are official higher education programs organized within the educational system that enable people to exercise a qualified profession in different professional categories. They are mainly designed for students who hold recognized high school qualifications (equivalent to the Spanish baccalaureate) and want intensive training in a profession leading to a higher education qualification, enabling them to enter the job market after two years, or simply as an alternative path towards a Bachelor s Degree program, with an advantageous course recognition plan. 6 7

5 The main objective of these advanced programs is for students to acquire the aptitudes that will allow them to adapt to present and future employment situations, assuming coordination, planning and assessment responsibilities. As well as the technical skills needed for their profession, this qualification enables students to assume leadership responsibilities and gives them an overall vision of the system in which they work. 1.UNIVERSIDAD EUROPEA ADMISSION PROCEDURES PERSONALIZED GUIDANCE (Contact our advisors) 1.UNIVERSIDAD EUROPEA ADMISSION PROCEDURES Depending on your selected study program and Campus, you have probably already had your personal advising session.
