4 Vee Vien Bachelor of Nursing I chose UOW because of its positive reputation, especially in the area of nursing, midwifery and indigenous health. I was drawn by the location of the campus, surrounded by beaches on one side and the escarpment on the other. The campus is spacious and filled with greenery. I ve learned to be more independent as it s the first time I m living away from home. Although it s challenging it is also very exciting as I explore new places. It feels good to be able to share about my country and culture with others and as a result, I m a more open person and a lot more confident with meeting new people. I live on campus so I have had the opportunity to meet and live with people from all over the world. The university provides very solid support to all their students in general, whether Domestic or International. International students, like myself, were orientated well to the campus and how the university functioned. UOW s support services are very extensive with allocated Student Support Advisers in every faculty who provide support for students on social and academic issues. Wollongong is not too busy, which allows me to focus more on my university commitments. It s the people that I ve met who have made my UOW experience worthwhile and I d recommend it to anyone. Mohd Ashaari Daud Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) I chose UOW because it is ranked as one of the top universities in Australia. I have learned to be independent, how to research effectively and work well in a group, which are really important skills. The lecturers are always supportive and suggesting additional ways to improve my knowledge. Barbecues and competitions held during Orientation Week are a great way to get to know other people. PASS (Peer Assisted Study Session) is really helpful, as is the English conversation group that helps first-year international students improve their English skills. My career ambition is to become an automotive engineer and UOW is the place I can achieve this. I would recommend coming here to experience the great people and culture. 2 UNIVERSITY OF WOLLONGONG

5 Work Experience AND ACCREDITATION A major factor in the success rate of UOW graduates in obtaining employment is that we provide an extensive range of work experience programs. Certificate in Global Workplace Practice (CGWP) The CGWP is designed to maximise your potential to gain employment after graduation. It is a free program that runs over two semesters, followed by 12 weeks of work experience placements. The program includes modules that will help you: Understand the Australian job search process and how best to look for and obtain a job after graduation. Learn practical workplace English skills you need to get a job, including resume writing and interview skills Obtain work experience placements with employers in Sydney and the Illawarra Understand professional business and workplace culture in Australia Professional Accreditation Our priority is to ensure that our courses meet the needs of employers that s why our courses are recognised internationally and in Australia through accreditation by professional organisations such as CPA Australia, Australian Computer Society, Engineering Australia, and the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport Australia. Integrated Work Experience Many UOW courses include periods of industrial, clinical, or practical work placement which must be completed as a requirement to graduate. Compulsory placements in the following programs ensure that the course meets relevant professional accreditation standards: Bachelor of Education Bachelor of Engineering Bachelor of Information Technology Bachelor of Law Bachelor of Nursing Bachelor and Masters courses in some specialist areas of health science e.g. Nutrition/Dietetics, Exercise Science Commerce and Arts Internships The Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts both offer the opportunity for you to complete an internship through an elective subject. Work placements are integrated into the curriculum to give you a direct link between class room learning, practical application and your career goals. Postgraduate Professional Practice Subjects These subjects give you the skills and knowledge to prepare for the Australian workplace. They incorporate elements developed in the Certificate in Global Workplace Practice, including: workplace practices; regulatory requirements; job search skills and recruitment processes; business communication; career development; and work placement. Professional Practice subjects are built into the following courses: Master of Commerce Master of Professional Accounting Master of Professional Engineering Freda Koh Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics Friends who were studying the course I was interested in recommended UOW to me. The best part of my UOW experience is being able to meet people from different countries. The lecturers are really easy to approach and are incredibly helpful with questions regarding the subject. I have learned to be independent and have improved my communication skills as I created relationships with people from all backgrounds. 6 Community The Good Universities Guide ranked UOW five out of five stars for Graduate Satisfaction in 2012 and UOW was also rated first for overall satisfaction among Australian university students in the independent Sweeney Research Group s 2009 Uni Student Report based on opportunities for students to become involved in campus life at their universities. There are over 4,200 international students currently studying at UOW. Students can connect with each other in over 50 student-run clubs and societies, ranging from religious and cultural groups to recreation and social groups. The Centre for Student Engagement and International Student Programs hold numerous events on campus such as leadership training, environmental programs and sightseeing trips. The UniBar attracts Australian and international live music acts, and provides a venue for performances by local bands, student bands and DJs. Support Peer Assisted Study Sessions Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) is an optional group learning program led by student leaders. PASS is a chance for you to get together in small groups with other students to compare notes, discuss important topics, and develop strategies for studying and learning. Library Our award-winning Library is here to support you while studying at UOW. As a source of information, research material and expert help, the library will help you succeed in your studies. Learning Resources The Learning Development Centre offers help and free services to improve your academic and English language skills. Services and facilities include academic skills programs, English workshops, and individual consultations. Faiz Md Din PhD in Engineering (Electronics) President of the Malaysian Student Association at UOW Faiz Md Din is completing his PhD in Engineering (Electronics) at the University of Wollongong s Innovation Campus. I chose to study at UOW because of its renowned reputation for its engineering and research strengths. The quality of professors is excellent and they all have a very practical approach, assisted by the heightened technology offered by UOW. The library is an excellent facility with a wide range of books and journals and the university also has an extremely good student enquiry centre. The Malaysian Student Association (MSA) is a club funded by UOW, which provides a great support network for Malaysian students. It s a venue for Malaysians to mingle and learn about Australian culture within safe boundaries. We currently have about 40 members and meet up at least every month to celebrate different events. We also network with Malaysian Associations throughout Sydney, which brings us into contact with over 500 other Malaysian students. MSA is a lot of fun and we love meeting new members and sharing our culture. 4 UNIVERSITY OF WOLLONGONG

7 Wollongong Wollongong is Australia s ninth largest city and is located just 80 km south of Sydney. The City of Wollongong is situated in close proximity to beautiful bush land and pristine beaches, stretching along 200 km of sandy coastline. From shopping in Wollongong s CBD to joining a sporting team, learning to surf or sightseeing down the Grand Pacific Drive, there is always something to do. At night, you can enjoy a wide variety of cuisines at one of our many restaurants or relax with friends at a café or bar. The city s multi-ethnic population, drawn from more than 70 backgrounds, has created a diverse community that welcomes UOW s international students. Accommodation There are a variety of accommodation options available during your studies at Wollongong: University-managed residences Homestay with a local family Private rental in shared houses or apartments Living in one of UOW s residences is a fantastic opportunity to make friends for life and benefit from an environment of high academic achievement, involvement, and personal development. For more information about accommodation, see 1 hr Wollongong Sydney Sydney Airport Louis Ling Ing Sung Team Leader and Software Engineer, Materialise Software Bachelor of Computer Science (Distinction) UOW degree offered through INTI College Graduated: 2004 The culture and environment at INTI College led me to choose the course. The most important experience garnered from my University of Wollongong studies is the discovery of my passion for programming and for this discovery I have to thank my lecturers. While studying, I also developed the way I thought and cultivated a thinking-out-of-thebox mentality. My passion has always been in the field of software engineering. UOW INTI provided a twinning program with UOW via the undergraduate degree in Computer Science. The degree enabled me to establish a strong foundation in software engineering with the guidance from academic staff. The degree also broadened my horizons in software engineering it taught me that software engineering is not just about firing up applications and coding but a complex but manageable communication between interested stakeholders. Flora Tok Bee Ting Bachelor of Commerce (Accountancy) Company Secretary and Accountant, MCE Consulting Sdn Bhd Graduated: 1989 My University of Wollongong studies helped open doors for me, in my case, Ernst & Young employed me out of university. Being educated on a wide range of topics at UOW helped me grasp the fundamentals necessary to progress in auditing, as did studying advanced tax law during my degree. There have been several instances where my degree has set me up for a role. One such instance was when I was employed by a development company because the financial manager was looking for quality graduates with an Australian degree. My UOW studies really helped to enable a clear and organised mind, a thirst for knowledge beyond what I had learned and a hunger to keep on improving. MALAYSIAN STUDENTS AT UOW 5
