2 ALICE is not a system that professional programmers use to develop commercial application. Alice was designed as a teaching tool to make programming easier to understand. SYNTAX errors are eliminated. Drag and drop tiles.

3 Tutorial contains 4 Alice Worlds to work on Recent Worlds - Templates - use this tab to Select templates to begin working on a new world Alice Worlds are saved with an.a2w extension Example Words Alice Developers creations Open a World browse For saved worlds. CREATE sub folder called Alice Worlds in your course folder

6 Objects Each Item that appears in an Alice World is an object. An Object has properties, which specify the object characteristics Objects also have METHODS which are actions that the object is capable of performing The Alice World itself is an Object. Name 3 Objects in the SnowLove World

7 Properties The values that specify the objects characteristics. Properties are adjustable. Two common properties that most objects have: - Color - Opacity (whether you can see through the object The Alice World itself is an Object. Change a few properties of an object in the SnowLove world

8 Methods Objects are capable of performing actions A method is a set of programming statements that and object can execute. When you create an Alice World, you will spend a big part of your time writing methods. More on this later.

9 Objects can be made of other objects For example, in the snowlove world, the snowman object is made of three other objects - a bottom section, a mid section, and a head section. Each object (mid section) includes other objects (called subparts). Example: left arm and right arm Each object has its own properties and can be manipulated with methods.

10 The World is an object Not only does Alice worlds contain objects, but also the world itself is an object. Alice worlds have a property called atmosherecolor, which specifies the color of the sky

11 Classes and Alice Galleries Objects are created from classes A class is a set of specifications that describe a particular type of object. Alice provides galleries with collections of classes that can be used to create object. Alice galleries are organized into various collections animals, buildings, people, etc. Alice provides two galleries: local and Web

12 Alice galleries do not contain actual objects they contain CLASSES. A class is description of the particular type of object written in programming statements. When you want to add an object to your world, first you find the object s class in one of the galleries. Classes are like a blueprint that the program uses to design the object requested.

16 Modifying Objects in 3D In the Scene Editor, you can use the mouse to modify objects in your Alice World

17 Rotation, Center Points and Orientation When you rotate and object, it turns around its center point In addition to the bounding box (yellow) there are 3 axes displayed. One in green, one in blue and one in magenta. Where these three axes come together is the object s center point.

19 Pitch, Roll, and Yaw 3D designers often uses the terms pitch, roll, and yaw to describe rotational movemment that an object can perform in 3D space. Pitch is the movement that and object makes when it rotates around its right/left axis Roll is the movement that an object makes when it rotates around its forward/backward axis Yaw is the movement an object makes when it rotates around its up/down axis

20 Single View / Quad View In Scene Editor mode, you can switch between single view and Quad View You can use the mouse to modify object in any view. Mouse buttons change a bit in Quad NO UP/Down Two NEW Scroll View and Zoom are added CHECK IT OUT with Tutorial 1-2.a2w open

21 Using Coordinates to Determine an 3 axes X, Y, and Z X is the horizontal Y is the vertical Object s Location Z is the depth of the world The point (0,0,0) is the center of the world The axes are measured in meters. You can see an objects center point in relation to the world by the pointofview property
