2 Summary Statement The educational program has been planned and implemented with the Essentials and Standards of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and the Ohio Society of Anesthesiologists (OSA). OSA s 65th Annual Meeting seeks to expand the practical knowledge base of the practicing anesthesiologist in a variety of areas. Areas of emphasis include: cardiac and pain management topics, ventilator update and pediatric airway workshop. Experts will present and discuss these topics with an emphasis on practical clinical approaches that will work for a primary anesthesia provider, resident supervisor or other anesthesia practitioner. Target Audience This educational program is directed toward the broad variety of anesthesiologists that comprises the population of practitioners in Ohio. This population includes anesthesiologists practicing in university teaching hospitals; tertiary care nonuniversity hospitals; urban, suburban, and rural community hospitals, outpatient surgical facilities, and office-based practices. The program also will serve to educate anesthesiology residents, anesthesia assistants, nurse anesthetists, PACU nurses, and others. 3 Learning Objectives At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be able to : Identify cardiac risk factors in patients presenting for surgery and assess their relevance in particular situations. Summarize the fundamentals of cardiac electrophysiology, with emphasis on how antiarrhythmics exert their effects. Recognize the anesthesia and surgical implications of pacemakers and implanted defibrillators. Predict possible anesthesia implications of the cardiac surgery patient with lung disease. Describe the current numerous efforts by the American Society of Anesthesiologists concerning the political, and clinical status of our specialty. Demonstrate the different approaches to management of the difficult pediatric airway. Classify and assess the various practitioners of pain management within Ohio. Examine and contrast two types of pain: neuropathic pain and complex regional pain syndrome. List the different types of spinal injections and assess their role in diagnosis and treatment of spinal pain syndromes. Review the different modalities of pain management in the pediatric patient. Develop a treatment strategy for benefiting the patient who suffers from cancer-related pain. Evaluate different plans for reducing risk in the practice of anesthesia. Recognize the different approaches to fluid resuscitation in trauma patients and be able to apply these to different clinical situations. Describe and apply to the practice of anesthesia newer techniques and equipment for management of the patient requiring artificial ventilation. Assess the patient at risk for coagulation abnormalities, with emphasis on laboratory findings and prevention and treatment of coagulopathies. The University of Cincinnati CME designates this educational activity for a maximum of Category 1 credits toward the AMA Physicians Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those credits that he/she actually spent in the educational activity. The meeting may be submitted for American Osteopathic Association Continuing Medical Education Category 2-A. 2.5 Category 1 credits will be awarded to participants of the Pediatric Airway Management Workshop.
