CPD Workshop and Short Course Programme For many years GCS has offered Continuing Professional Development events and forums for therapists, people in the helping professions and students. The programme is usually held in Stroud on Saturdays from They are interactive, stimulating and a great opportunity to meet fellow practitioners and to explore new and challenging ideas. Booking and Cancellation: Bookings are provisional on receipt of a booking form and the correct fee. Saturdays 21st Jan, 25th Feb & Mar 18th Creating a Couple State of Mind presented by Madeleine Woof and Suzanna Mackenzie 10am - 4pm A 3-day interlinking course, each day building on the previous, designed to develop and substantiate couple therapy theories and practice. The capacity to develop and occupy the couple state of mid is vital to the success and integrity of the work offered by the couple and therapist. This short course will aim to develop and integrate use of fundamental couple therapy theories such as: Unconscious couple fit Shared fantasy Projective identification 2 / 9

3 Oedipal dynamics, from the dyad to the triad The course best taken as a whole but modules can stand alone. Suzanna Mackenzie is a BAPC accredited counsellor and psychotherapist and holds an MSc. in psychosexual therapy, with a private practice near Stroud for individuals, couples and families. Madeleine Woof has a private practice working with individuals, couples and families. For the last 25 years she has also worked as a therapist at The Bridge Foundation for Psychotherapy in Bristol. Having held a clinical lecturer faculty post at Tavistock relations in London, she is currently a visiting clinician and trainer for TR. Saturdays 14th Jan & 4th Feb 2017 Attachment Theory and the Internal Working Models of Children presented by Niki Reeves 10am - 4pm A two day, theory workshop looking at attachment theory with children in detail. With the inclusion of film clips, understanding will be gained of Mary Ainworths 'Strange Situation Test' 3 / 9

4 that brought the theory to life. There will be explanation of the theory of 'Internal Working Models' that forms the structures for all our expectations of the behaviour of ourselves and of others. With a deeper understanding of these models, therapists can begin to help children to create models that will enable better outcomes and more secure relationships at school and at home. Niki Reeves trained as a Psychodynamic Counsellor in the eraly 1990's and then as an Attachment Based Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist at the Bowlby centre in London. a member of the UKCP Ethics Commitee, a qualified Supervisor and Tutor, Niki has trained counsellors to Diploma level. Fees: External 190, Group Rate 175 for groups of 3 or more Saturday 11th March 2017 The Body Keeps the Score - Working with Complex Trauma presented by Christiane Sanderson 10am - 4pm This workshop will introduce cutting edge research in neuroscience and how trauma shapes the brain and how this impacts on the wellbeingof survivors. It will examine a range of traumas and how complex trauma gives rise to symptoms such as dissasociation, intrusive memories, flashbacks, hyperarousal and avoidance. The focus will be on enhancing awareness of how trauma is stored in the right brain, outside of conscious awareness and how the lack of verbally accessible memories leads to the body keeping score. Christiane Sanderson (BSc, MSc) is an experienced counselling psychologist, lecturer and trainer in psychology and counselling with a particular interest in child protection, interpersonal abuse and trauma. She is Lecturer in Psychology at Roehampton University, London University and Birkbeck College. She is also consultant and trainer to statutory and voluntary agencies as well as practitioner with over 25 years' experience of working with survivors of CSA. 5 4pm Presented by Robin Shohet, one of the leading experts in Supervision Training, this workshop will explore the skill of making the best possible use of supervision, the supervision group and your supervisor. Fridays 21st April, 5th May, 29th May and 1st June Families and Beyond: An Introduction to Systemic Thinking presented by Gwyn Daniel 9.30am pm In collaboration with the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, GCS is delighted to offer this four day short course on systemic thinking and its application within therapeutic work. Through a combination of seminars and work discussion groups, you will learn new ways of thinking about and negotiating personal and work relationships as well as many other applications of systemic ideas. The course is open to all those who work with people whether in a counselling/therapeutic capacity or other contexts. It is for carers, managers, teachers, health and social care professionals and all those who would like to find out more about systemic thinking and practice; whether for career purposes or out of general interest. Fees: External 420, Group rate 380 for groups of 3 or more Saturday 6th May 2017 Kessler 10am - 1pm Endings: How Much Time is Enough? presented by Ally The subject of endings gives rise to fundamental questions about what psychotherapy is for and how we know when it is finished. It is often a time of anxiety for both patient and therapist and is 5 / 9

6 particularly prey to the pressures of idealisation, theoretical beliefs and the demands of patients and organisations. In this workshop, participants will think together about their clinical experiences of endings; we will explore the question: how much time is enough? It is suitable for therapists at all levels of experience who would like to explore this subject further. Ally Kessler is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, and a training therapist and supervisor at The Severnside Institute of Psychotherapy in Bristol. She has also led workshops and study days on working with people affected by life-threatening illness. She is Chair of the Psychodynamic Training at SIP. Fees: External 35, Group Rate 30 for groups of 3 or more Saturday 17th June A one day workshop on Grief presented by Dr Liz Rolls 10am - 4pm Dr Liz Rolls holds Honorary Reserach Fellowships at The University of Gloucestershire and at The International Observatory on End of Life Care, Lancaster University. She is an accredited member of the BACP, member of the UK Childhood Bereavement Network Advisory Panel and a current member and ex-chair of the Bereavement Research Forum. Her research interests continue to centre on death, dying and bereavement. She has undertaken a number of qualitative studies realted to the work of UK child bereavement services, including childrens experience of their use, as well as end of life and palliative care. Fees: 70 external, Group rate 65 for groups of 3 or more Saturday 1st July 2017 Self Harm, Self Care and The Way Between presented by Maggie Turp 10.30am pm 6 / 9

7 In this workshop the relationship between self-harm and suicidal behaviour will be explored. Drawing on DVD footage and service user testimony, we will consider hw individuals who self-harm conceptualise their experience, attending both the aetiology and function of self-harming behaviour. Dr Maggie Turp is a psychodynamic psychotherapist, supervisor in practice and chartered psychologist. Her academic career has included lectureships at The University of Reading and Birkbeck College, London. For the past decade, Maggie's educational work has included the provision of CPD training workshops for regionally based associations of counsellors and psychotherapists. Fees: 95 external, Group Rate 85 for groups of 3 or more Experiential Group Work with The Gloucestershire Counselling Service Essential self-awareness and group experience for anyone working, training or considering training in the therapeutic professions. GCS is offering a once-weekly self-awareness/experiential group which will begin in November The group is suitable for: - People who are interested in training as counsellors or therapists and who would like to develop their self-awareness in a group setting - Counsellors or other therapists in training who are interested in furthering their own self-awareness in a group setting (the group is not limited to GCS trainees - applications are welcomed from people on other training courses) 7 / 9

8 - People who are interested in group work and who would like to do more The Group Conductor, Di King is an Individual and Group Analytic Psychotherapist. She is a member of Group Analysis International and Group Analysis South West which is based in Bristol. Her interest is in groups in general and as a model for both personal development and clinical work. Fee: 15 weekly The group will run on Wednesday afternoons from 1.30pm-3pm at Alma House in Stroud.
