Introduction and Special Features 14-a Introduction Professional accreditation of counsellors in the U.K., as exemplified in the regulations of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), requires that the counsellor be engaged in regular supervision with a suitably trained and experienced supervisor. The Postgraduate Certificate in Counsellor Supervision prepares appropriately qualified and experienced practitioners for employment as supervisors, and also for subsequent application for Counselling Supervisor Accreditation under the existing scheme of the professional body. Those for whom the course is intended: Practising counsellors who wish to undertake initial training in supervision. Practising counsellors who are already involved in providing supervision and wish to review and update their knowledge and skills. Practising counsellors and supervisors who wish to prepare for application to the BACP Supervisor Accreditation Scheme. 1

2 14-b Special features of the programme. 15. Criteria for Admission Candidates for entry to the Postgraduate Certificate in Counsellor Supervision must have successfully completed a recognised training course in counselling to Diploma level or equivalent. Candidates should be experienced counsellors, who are currently practising and who have been working, under supervision, for a minimum of two years following their main programme of professional training. Applicants will be Accredited with the BACP or another recognised governing body or they will have completed the minimum number of practice hours for accreditation eligibility Applicants will be expected to have had experience of being a client in a counselling relationship. Applicants will be counsellors/psychotherapists who have had a range of practice experience in different settings and contexts. All applicants must either have at least one person established in individual supervision at the time of making an application to join the course or a firm date for such supervision to have commenced by the starting date of the course. In addition to the above requirements all course members will be expected to be under supervision from an appropriately trained and experienced counselling supervisor for both their counselling and supervision practice. Applicants with qualifications from outside the U.K will be considered on an individual basis. 16. Programme Aims The Postgraduate Certificate in Counsellor Supervision aims to: Explore attitudes, deepen understanding and develop skills appropriate to individual and group supervision. Assist students in developing an understanding of a range of approaches to supervision. Enable practitioners to extend their experience of supervised supervision within the work setting and gain a preparation for work as supervisors in organisations, voluntary settings or private practice. Train competent and reflective practitioners Support participants in their progress towards application to the current BACP Accredited Practitioner scheme. 17-M YSJU Level M / NQF Level 7 / FHEQ M 17-Ma Level M Programme Outcomes (specify subject specific learning outcomes and key skills and where an interim award is attainable) Students who gain the award specified will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: Define the specific tasks, functions and process of counsellor supervision and 2

3 differentiate it from associated activities. Critically evaluate the contributions of a range of models and approaches to individual and group supervision. Appraise the dynamics of the supervision relationship and analyse interactions between supervisor, supervisee and client. Demonstrate knowledge and awareness of both organisational and cultural contexts of counsellor supervision Exhibit competence in a clearly defined range of intervention and feedback skills required for effective supervision. Critically analyse personal and professional strengths and areas for development in relation to supervision competence. Proactively formulate and articulate a personally integrated approach to supervision. Demonstrate awareness and detailed understanding of ethical, professional, legal and anti-discriminatory considerations in the practice of supervision. Use supervision of supervision to develop competent, self-reflective practice. Provide evidence of showing openness to, and an ability to learn from, constructive feedback given by peers and course tutors. Synthesize a range of key theoretical and methodological approaches to supervision in order to articulate a sound philosophy and methodology of supervision practice. Show evidence of the ability to implement and critically evaluate specific supervision strategies appropriate to the needs of particular individuals in a variety of settings. Demonstrate comprehensive skills of logging, analysing and critically evaluating supervision sessions through systematic consideration of objectives, process and outcome. Critically evaluate current issues and research in the practice of supervision. Use a range of learning resources to research ideas, knowledge and materials they require to fulfil the programme outcomes and their own objectives within the programme. 17-Mb Level M Programme Structure and Content Programme content comprises: Theoretical Input Development of Individual Supervision Skills Development of Group Supervision Skills Supervision Issues, including ethics, legal issues and anti-discriminatory practice Supervision Practice within the Work Setting Professional Development of the Supervisor Modules for the Programme (Please list modules) Code Title Credits Semester Status of Module MID080 The Theory and Process of Supervision 30 CA MID090 The Skills and Practice of Supervision 30 CA Status of Module will be either: C: Compulsory, CP: Compulsory for progression to the next level, CA: Compulsory for award, O: option or E: elective The 2 modules are compulsory for the award, and are offered concurrently. Both modules are taught modules. Module MID090 also involves work-based learning, and includes supervision of supervision practice provided by course tutors, and by external University-approved supervisors. 3

4 The programme is part-time and normally meets fortnightly for six hours over ten months. Additionally, students are required to undertake a minimum of twenty hours of supervision practice in their work setting. Participants are themselves expected to locate opportunities for supervision practice. A pass must be achieved in both modules for the award of the Postgraduate Certificate. 17-Mc Level M Teaching and Learning and Assessment Strategies The programme combines theoretical inputs from the tutor team with participative and experiential teaching and learning. Members of the learning group are encouraged to become actively involved in the learning process, not just by participating in activities arranged by tutors, but also by sharing knowledge, methods and skills with other programme members. Responsibility for learning lies with the individual and students are encouraged to reflect upon their experience and learning so as to develop their skills in peer and self assessment. Course meetings include lectures, discussion groups, skills training groups and supervision of supervision groups. Staff will take responsibility for the development of a learning context which is personally and professionally challenging and meaningful. The programme allows for a balance between structure and flexibility. It is recognized that participants spend only 2 days each month on the University campus, and therefore require appropriate supported learning facilities between group meetings. The Supported Open Learning element of the programme comprises supported practice of supervision in the workplace, together with guided reading and study. The University Virtual Learning Environment represents an additional tool for communication and interactive learning activities. An introduction to VLE awareness will figure as part of the initial student course induction. Assessment of the modules will occur at the end of each module. Assessment strategies include: essay assignment; summary of personal and professional development based on a learning journal; supervised practice file; live presentation of a supervision interaction with written evaluation. The assessment strategies reflect the requirements of the learning outcomes which relate to knowledge, skills and personal and professional development. 18.
