10 Why Do We Disagree on Climate Change? People s beliefs regarding climate change depend on the character of the person, their religious beliefs and ideologies. (Demeritt et al, 2011) Climate change can also affect the overall success and failure of a country. (Liverman, 2009) It is a matter of national security, and personal security(liverman, 2009) Nasty Politics Rejection of Kyoto Protocol (International Agreement For Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions)

12 Current Legislation (2007-Present) In 2007, National Academies and American Meteorological Society, release statement urging United States to take prompt action to reduce climate change Carbon Dioxide is considered the main culprit, but legislation would aim to reduce other greenhouse gasses as well. 13 Legislation From th Congress ( ) House Speaker: Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) Senate Leader: Harry Reid (D-NV) America s Climate and Security Act of 2007 Goal of 70% Below 2005 Levels by 2050 Fuel Must Contain Less Carbon Clean Air/Climate Change Act of 2007 Gives Permission for Environmental Protection Agency to be able to regulate Carbon Dioxide Clean Air Planning Act of 2007 Emissions should reduce by 1%, compared to the previous year Climate Matters 80% below 1990 Levels by % of CO2 allowances would be auctioned off Climate Stewardship and Innovation Act of 2007 Increased funding to NOAA and the National Science Foundation to receive funding to study climate change. Global Warming Reduction Act 20% of Electricity should come from renewable resources by 2020

19 Carbon Offsetting Liverman (2010) states that the main idea is that a company would have to purchase credits to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Buying these credits, would require a company to fund a green project. Critics argue that it would not be affective, and it would be hard to calculate Liverman argues that it is important to not get lost in the calculations Conservatives in general, are against taxes

21 Conclusions The predicted atmospheric CO2 concentration shows the biggest increase in the 22 nd century (Bala, G et al (2005) Changes in ENSO, Dieback of rainforest, the green of the Sahara Desert, melting of arctic ice. (Liverman, 2009) Amplification of Polar Warming (Zhang, J et al (2006) More precipitation worldwide (Neelin, 2011) Best Option: Carbon Offsetting and Enforcement by EPA The time is now!
