COURSE TITLE // TUTOR // Textile Screen Printing - Beginners Karen Stansfield DATE & TIME // Saturday 19 th / Sunday 20 th November 2016, 10-4 VENUE // Screen room and gallery space West Yorkshire Print Workshop 75a Huddersfield Road, Mirfield, West Yorkshire, WF14 8AT info@wypw.org COURSE SUMMARY // Learn how the screen printing process works in our fully equipped workshop and take home t-shirts and bags and samples printed with your very own designs! No experience necessary. The course covers making screens using the photo-exposure processes, and printing using water-based inks. 2 plain white t-shirts and 2 calico bags are included in the course cost, and extra are available to purchase on the day in a range of men s and women s sizes.
Karen Stansfield is a textile artist, studio holder and member at WYPW. Karen started her career in surface pattern design, specialising in printing onto cloth, embroidery and fashion garment construction. Over the past twenty five years she has worked in a wide variety of areas within the creative industries designing and making, which incorporated a period of time making costumes for television and theatre. Karen devises and delivers workshops teaching printmaking and other art based skills to people of all ages and abilities within the Yorkshire region, working in both school and community settings. She also produces her own art work which she exhibits locally and nationally. FURTHER INFO // Before you attend the course you need to think about the images you wish to print. We will aim to produce a two colour image using simple registration, (lining-up), techniques. It is recommended that you choose an image where your print will not look odd if your registration, (lining-up), is slightly out of place. The course will cover using the photo-emulsion method of transferring an image to a screen. A design or image is printed onto an acetate sheet in black, and sandwiched between a silk screen coated with a light sensitive photo-emulsion. The screen is then exposed to UV light. Where the light penetrates, the emulsion is hardened, where the light is blocked by the black image areas, the emulsion remains soft. When the screen is then washed out with water, the soft areas wash away, and the hardened areas stay put - creating a durable stencil. During printing, ink is pushed through the screen with a squeegee, but will only pass through the areas which have been washed away, thus creating your printed image. The information guidelines below are to help in preparing your images before you arrive. If you have any queries please us with your ideas before the workshop sessions so we can help, however we do have a file containing images which are available for you to use. Images size: A4 Maximum
To achieve this print we need to separate the coloured area from the black outline. These shapes need to be printed onto acetate in a dense black, in order to block the light during the stencil-making process. These are what the shapes look like in acetate form The body block shape The linear outline We then use the acetates to expose the image onto the silk screens. Screen one: The body Screen two: Detailed outline Completed print
Once the screens are processed you can wash them and change your colour way. You will be learning how to mix your inks so you can achieve the desired colours you want and learning how to coat and clean your screens. The whole process can sometimes get messy so please wear suitable clothing and no open toe footwear. If you have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to contact the tutor directly before the course: Karen Stansfield ITINERARY // Day one: Introductions Tour of the building and screen room incorporating health and safety procedures Preparing silk screens Preparing images Producing screens Ink preparation First layer printed Screens cleaned Day Two: Recap on the previous day Preparing screen Preparing print bed and registrations Second colour print Cleaning screen Heat sealing textiles The above are guidelines only as the tutor will respond to the dynamics of the group. During the session questions are welcomed to ensure you get as much out of attending the course.
WHAT TO BRING // If you can, it would be useful to bring the following with you: Pencil, ruler and notebook Apron Glasses! (If you need them!) Any of your own items or small pieces of material to print onto, white or light colours only. Images / artwork you would like to use, if you have some. GENERAL // On arrival please ring the bell and wait for someone to answer. You ll need to sign in, and let a member of staff know which course you are on, so that they can show you where to go. Please try to arrive around 10 minutes early for each day of the course, so that the tutor can go through health and safety and domestic arrangements with you, and to ensure the course can start promptly. If you arrive any earlier than this you re free to make a brew and have a look around the gallery, but please be aware that the tutor will be preparing for the course during this time. Please bear in mind that one of the main objectives of our courses is for those attending to learn a skill, rather than to create a masterpiece. Most of our courses are designed to give you a good understanding of the technical processes involved in making a print, so that you can start practicing the techniques yourself, either in the workshops here, or elsewhere. We will guide you wherever possible about what sort of imagery will be best to use, but often it isn t until you learn a process that you can decide what sort of images will work best, or suit that particular technique. If you have any specific questions before the course then please feel free to get in touch. Similarly if you have any specific questions or issues during the course, please make sure you ask the tutor that is what they are there for, and they re always happy to help! It is a good idea to wear old clothing and / or an apron. (If you don t have your own we have some here). Long hair should be tied back, and avoid wearing loose jewellery like bracelets or scarves which could get trapped or tangled in machinery and
equipment. There is a member s kitchen area with tea and coffee making facilities, (for which we ask for a small donation), a microwave, toaster and fridge. You are welcome to bring your own lunch with you, or there are local bakeries and shops for you to purchase food. Please let us know prior to the course if you have any special requirements or access needs, or if you suffer from any condition which we should be aware of. Parking on the road outside the workshop is limited to 1 hour between 8am and 6pm Monday - Saturday but is unlimited outside of these times. Free 24 hour parking is available in the car park directly behind and across the road from Mirfield Library (where the recycling bins are). Please note that parking in the Co-op and Lidl car parks is now limited to 2 hours maximum. Warning: although we minimise the use of certain chemicals, some techniques may involve the use of agents which require wearing personal protective equipment such as mask and gloves. If you have any known allergies to any substances please let us know. This course is not advisable for pregnant women.
