This class will be what you make of it. If you study and stay engaged you will have fun and learn some things. I look forward to meeting you all. Course Description: Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to: Describe, using proper terminology, the overall structure/function relationships of the major body systems. Explain the progression of structural levels from chemical compounds to organ systems. Identify the major anatomical and histological features of the major organ systems. Critically analyze the interrelationships of the organ systems.

2 Due to the amount of terminology you will encounter, it is recommended that you keep a list of vocabulary throughout the term, and read all material to be covered thoroughly prior to attending lab or lecture. Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student should understand the following content areas: The primary goal of this course is to offer an in-depth presentation of the function of the major organs and organ systems of the human body. Integration of the organ systems to maintain constancy of the internal environment Regulation of homeostasis by neuronal, endocrine, and local chemical messengers Role of the Nervous System in regulating organ function Adaptive responses to exercise and the role of exercise in maintaining health Adaptive physiological responses to stress, infectious organisms, and toxins Changes in bodily function through the life span, nutrition and lifestyle choices and Moodle: Some course materials and notices will be distributed via and the course Moodle site. It is the responsibility of students to make sure they have an active campus address on the SUNY Purchase Exchange server to register properly on Moodle, and to check their and the course web site on Moodle frequently. It is essential that you fill in your first name, last name, and address under Personal Information at the beginning of the semester, or you will not be able to access important course information or your grades. Grading: Grades are based on attendance, class participation exams, and the semester long project. There will be no extra credit! If you are struggling; start a study group, talk me or arrange for tutoring for extra help. Grading: Final grades will be calculated using the following rubric: Examinations: 15% each 45% Semester long project 15% Laboratory Activities: Includes notebook, participation, technique, and completed lab activities assigned 10% Two (2) Laboratory Practicals 30% * Note: the laboratory portion of the class must be passed to receive a passing grade for the course.

3 Project: I will hand out a list of potential topics for projects. You need to pick a topic then discuss it with me and I will provide further guidance. I expect you to do research and do a professional job on your papers with no citation problems Attendance: Attendance and participation in required. Missing more than 2 lectures will a letter grade drop, more than this may result in a failure of the class. Classroom Etiquette: Appropriate classroom behavior is expected, and behavior or activity that is disruptive to class work will not be allowed. It is inappropriate to carry on conversations during class, as these are disruptive to other students and the professor. Cell phones should be turned off during class. It is inappropriate to speak on your cell phone during class, to use your phone for text messaging during class, to let your phone ring during class, or even to set it on vibrate, then check the caller or leave the room to take the call. Simply turn off your phone during class. (In the case of an unusual family emergency, speak to your professor before class.) Course Requirements: Students are expected to attend and participate in regular class meetings and to participate in discussion. Specific requirements include: Regular participation in class activities and completion of assigned readings and laboratories (readings and/or laboratory handouts may be found on the course web site on Moodle); Regular use of the course web site on Moodle for announcements, readings, assignments, and activities; Laboratory Laboratory exercises are designed to complement the lecture schedule of this class. To this end, it may be necessary, at times, to use a portion of the laboratory period to further explain lecture material. Students will work in lab groups consisting of 2-3 members with each participant being responsible for any of the assigned work or reports to be handed in for a grade. We do not have the facilities to accommodate human cadavers for dissection but we will provide ample representation through models, prepared microscopic slides, computer simulations, and animal tissue dissections including bone, brain, and heart. Proper respect is expected of all samples used for dissection. Under no circumstance are specimens to leave the lab and proper disposal of samples will be made available. If there are any questions regarding how or where to dispose of any material, ask Dr. Monks. If using the lab facilities outside of the scheduled class period, please give appropriate respect to any class that may be meeting at that time and ask the instructor for permission to be in the lab at that time.
