2 What is the Internet Society? The Internet Society (ISOC) is a cause-based organization that works with governments, industries, and others to ensure the technologies and policies that helped develop and evolve the Internet will continue into the future. Our programs cultivate an Internet that is open to everyone, everywhere and aim to ensure that it will continue to be a tool for creativity, innovation, and economic growth. 3 ISOC s Training Activities to date Early INETs in the 1990s More recently Routing training under the ITE Program IXP technical training under AXIS Project NREN routing technical training AfNOG Track Zero localization in partnership with AFNOG and NSRC cctld Registry Operations Course in partnership with AfTLD, ICANN and NSRC Supporting African Network Operators Groups: AfNOG, GhNOG, SdNOG, EANOG, SAFNOG, TZNOG among others

4 Online Training Course on DNS DNS is one of the key infrastructures of the Internet A bad DNS setup means several other Internet services will suffer performance issues eg browsing, and web services As part of efforts to build capacity on the continent and improve Internet services quality, ISOC developed a hands on, technical online course that focuses on DNS Several experts involved in 9 month course preparation

5 Objectives of the Course To train participants on: How to install a UNIX/Linux Operating Systems Networking concepts IPv4 and IPv6 How to edit files in UNIX and Linux and create simple scripts Detailed DNS Theory for Authoritative DNS and Recursive DNS How to build and manage DNS Servers according to standards Introduce trainees to the Internet Engineering Task Force and standards The course intends to provide trainees with real world skills useful to them in their careers and which will improve Internet services available in the continent

6 Why teach DNS, UNIX/Linux and Open Standards? Most IT Companies, ISPs, Registries and Registrars run open source softwares for online services and require new hires to have skills in UNIX and Linux The course teaches open standards and introduces the Internet Engineering Task Force IETF. It is hoped that this will increase participation of Africans to the IETF in the future Important to encourage deployment of services that obey RFCs DNS is a key service and learning how it works is important for upcoming engineers regardless of their career path

7 The course in numbers so far More than 450 engineers enrolled over 8 months Including more than 80 women engineers Trainees from more than 15 African countries in 4 African regions Feedback collected from more than 120 trainees More than 100 registered users on the course Facebook page 3 NOGs, 2 NRENs, AFTLD to use it as a prerequisite course in 2016 Translation to French ongoing

9 How can you use the course cctlds and Registrars: The course covers the Domain Name System intensively from the ground up Hands on approach is good for engineers who manage DNS servers Course uses UNIX/Linux which is commonly used Trainees learn about best practices of managing records (MX, Reverse etc) and DNS RFCs Others: Learning to troubleshoot DNS Problems: Step by step guide on how to identify DNS Problems and fix them Learn best practices in deploying DNS: in offices, small networks, University networks etc

10 How can you use the course cont d Build an online training lab to build skills: Can be done on minimal hardware. Trainees each get virtualized servers to run labs on Enriches the experience for trainees who will be able to deploy and test the DNS service in a test environment AFTLD currently testing an online lab with help from KENIC (.ke) hosting it KENET, Sudan NOG and RENU could be having theirs soon

11 How to sign up in 2016? With AFTLD: Pre-requisite for the ROCs Write to AFTLD Application procedure: Online Application process takes 1 week Course takes two to four weeks to complete Moderated, weekly calls Translation will be completed in Q1/Q2 2016
