3 Who Jesus Is a Bible Study introduction This Bible Study is for general use and is designed to encourage self-study by each participant as well as discussion within a group. The desired outcome is a deeper understanding of the character and mission of the Lord Jesus Christ, the impact of His life on each of us, and how we can exemplify Him in our walk of life. Resource Materials The Bible is the primary resource for this entire study. The use of concordances, reference Bibles (e.g., Thompson Chain Reference Bible) and marginal cross-referencing to answer some of the questions may be helpful. Memory Verse And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. 4 Section 1 Scriptural basis for studying this topic In numerous scriptural accounts the disciples and other individuals answered the question, Who is Jesus? based on their understanding. Questions 1. What did the disciples have to say about this in Matthew 16:13-14? 2. What did Peter say (Matthew 16:15-16)? 3. Find another scriptural account where the disciples or other individuals answered this question and write out the answer. 4. 5 Section 2 Prophecy concerning the nature of Jesus Christ the Messiah A prime example of prophetic description of the nature of Jesus is found in Isaiah 9:6: For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Questions 1. Select two of the names for Jesus from Isaiah 9:6 and describe them in your own words. Be prepared to share with the group any personal experience or special appreciation you have regarding one of these attributes. a. b. 2. 6 Section 3 Descriptions in the Gospels of Jesus attributes and His mission (purpose) Several descriptions of Christ appear in John 1:1, 9-10, 18, 29, 38, 41 and 49. Questions 1. What are the words used here to describe Jesus? 2. Find three scriptural references where Jesus himself described some aspect of His own nature and/or role. Example: I am the good shepherd (John 10:11). a. b. c. 3. Be prepared to share your thoughts on one of the above attributes of Christ with the group. 7 4. Jesus stood up in the synagogue in Nazareth and read from Isaiah 61 a beautiful description of His mission while here on earth (Luke 4:18-19). List the key points below: a. b. c. d. e. f. 5. 9 Section 4 Knowing Jesus in a personal way Many Scriptures describe the intimate personal relationship the believer is to have with Jesus. A wonderful example of this is found in John 10:27: My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. Questions 1. Find two other Scriptures in which this personal relationship with Jesus is described. (Key word hints: friend, member, one with) a. b. 2. What must occur in order for this relationship to be established? Back up your answers with Scriptures. 3. What are some of our responsibilities for strengthening our relationship with Jesus? 10 Section 5 The Human Side of Jesus and its significance to us today. Hebrews 2:16 describes the human form which Jesus took upon himself: For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. Questions 1. Find two additional Scriptures which describe the human side of Jesus and discuss the implications of this in each case. (Hint: expression of human emotions) a. b. 2. What are some of your impressions or observations of how Jesus continues to be woven into our culture today in both positive and negative ways? 11 Section 6 Key points of the study for review Questions 1. We must give an account someday of Who Jesus Is. Answer in your own words, Who is Jesus? Explain what this means to you based on what you have learned. 2. Be able to list a substantial number of the biblical names and attributes of Jesus. 3. Jesus had a mission, and we are given a mission as His followers. Be able to describe His mission in your own words, recount the four-pillar mission of our church, and state your own commitment to address ways in which you can do better in fulfilling this mission. 4. List several ways you have learned to strengthen your relationship with Jesus. 5. List some points which can be helpful to you in explaining who Jesus is to others who may not know Him. 12 Conclusion Jesus is the Son of God. He became human and lived a perfect life, free from sin. He faithfully fulfilled His mission to die for our sins, and He serves as our advocate today. He is the foundation of our faith. Motivated by heartfelt love for Him, we seek to diligently obey His commandments.
