1 About the Games About the Games The World Transplant Games have been in existence for over 25 years when the first Transplant Olympics were held in Portsmouth, England in At that time, these Games were an international event and included teams from France, Germany, Greece, and the United States. The Games have grown from 100 participants to 1500 representing 55 countries in Nancy, France, in The summer World Transplant Games are held every two years. In the intervening years the Winter Games are staged, the most recent being in Bormio, Italy January 18-25, Currently there are 68 member countries of the World Transplant Games Federation most of which have their own National Transplant Sports organizations including the Canadian Transplant Association ( In addition to the World Games, there are also many Regional Games throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and in the future South America and Africa. The competitors are unique in that each one of them is alive as a result of a successful organ transplant. Competitors must be medically fit with no significant complications of chronic organ failure or immunosuppressive therapy. World Transplant Games competitors demonstrate the level of health and vitality that can be achieved after transplantation. The Games embrace all ages, anyone from four 80 years old who have received a lifesaving organ transplant more than one year before the Games. Photos supplied by Mike Brown, London, Canada
2 Information 2005 World Transplant Games Information The World Transplant Games represent the largest organ donor awareness event in the world. The XV World Transplant Games is a nine day series of athletic events. The 2005 World Transplant Games will take place July 16 24, 2005 in London, Ontario, Canada. These Olympic style and International Olympic Committee endorsed games will attract more than 2,000 participants from more than 55 countries. Sports at the XV World Transplant Games in London include: 5 Pin Bowling, 10 Pin Bowling, Badminton, Cycling, Golf, Lawn Bowls, Mini Marathon, Rowing, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Athletics (Track and Field), and Volleyball. Fujisawa Children s Program The 2005 World Transplant Games is expected to attract children competitors ages 13 and younger from around the world. A goal of the London Games is to encourage the participation of transplant children and therefore the London Organizing Committee will subsidize the registration fee for the first 150 child competitors. Children must have had their transplant, (liver, heart, lungs, kidney, or bone marrow), at least one year before the date of the Opening Ceremonies for the Games. The Fujisawa Children's Program will include sport competitions (Athletics, Swimming, and Bowling) as well as tours, attractions and recreational events. The program is designed to increase the number of children who participate in the World Transplant Games and to demonstrate that a healthy, active lifestyle is attainable after transplantation. These young transplant recipients will join their adult counterparts to send a message of thanks to the organ donor families and encourage others to consider organ and tissue donation. Children from around the globe are invited to meet others who have gone through the same experience, celebrate life, and show the world that organ donation and transplantation works!

5 Facts & Stats: Facts & Stats: The Need for Organ Donation There are 4,000 Canadians who are waiting for an organ transplant to save or improve their lives. Last year, only 1,803 transplants were performed so many patients remain on the waiting list. Unfortunately, 195 Canadians died while waiting for an organ transplant. In Canada, three-quarters of the patients on the waiting list need a kidney transplant. Almost half of transplant recipients are between 45 to 64 years of age. Most recipients are male (65 per cent). In the United States, 57,000 people are waiting for organs, many of them children. A new name is added to the transplant waiting list every 16 minutes, and nine people each day die waiting. In the United Kingdom, more than 5,000 are waiting for transplants; in Germany, 39,000; in Japan, 170,000. Canadian transplant patients are living longer as a result of improvements in surgical techniques and organ preservation, advances in anti-rejection drugs, and better care during hospitalization. In 2001, there were 420 cadaveric organ donors in Canada for a national rate of 13.5 donors per million population. Newfoundland had the highest provincial rate with 28 donors per million. Most donors (77 per cent) donate more than one organ or tissue. According to the Canadian Organ Replacement Register, death usually results from an intracranial event (49 per cent), such as a stroke, brain aneurysm or cerebral hemorrhage. The second leading cause of death is motor vehicle collision (21 per cent). The average age of donors has increased steadily. In 2000, cadaveric organ donors ranged in age from under one year to 84 years old, with an average age of 39 years. A report by David Baxter and Jim Smerdon, Donation matters: demographics and organ transplants in Canada, , reveals some interesting findings. It appears that Canada s low rate of organ donation in comparison to other countries (for example, Spain s rate is 34) is not a result of lack of generosity or altruism but because of better health practices. For example, Canada s death rate from automobile accidents is 50 per cent of what it is in Spain and the United States. Furthermore, deaths from gunshot wounds in this country are three times less than in the United States. Also, Canadians are more likely to receive timely and effective treatment for strokes and aneurysms than people in many other countries. These factors reduce the opportunities for obtaining organs.
