5 The Need: Gone are the days when door closers & floor springs served the only purpose of closing the door automatically. Today, with commercial as well as residential establishments being equipped with hi-tech facilities, the requirements for door closing devices have also changed. Now, door closing devices are expected to become an integral part of such hi-tech facilities within the establishments & perform to the level sufficing the needs such as, Security - To ensure the door is closed, especially if the door has a latch on it, then it is very important that the door closing device closes the latch & shuts the door completely keeping the section secure. 5 Privacy - The door closing device must ensure the privacy of different sections within a building by separating them by accurate closing of the door. 7 Fire Rated : All the external & internal components as well as fluids like oil inside the door closer is tested to withstand fire for a particular time period. Closing Moment : The torque generated by a door closing device which acts upon the door leaf during the closing operation. Power Size : A measure of closing moment exerted by a door closer. Adjustable Latching Speed : A speed control operable only during last few degrees of door closing. 7 Adjustable Closing Moment : An inbuilt function that allows the closing moment of a door closer to be adjusted over a range of power sizes. Back check Back Check : An inbuilt buffer which helps to prevent a door leaf being flung wide open by providing adjustable cushioning effect when the door is thrown open. Delayed Action : An inbuilt function that allows the door closing device to be retarded for an adjustable period of time before resuming controlled closing, allowing the disabled, elderly people or long trolleys, stretchers to pass through the door unhindered.

8 WORKING MECHANISM OF DOOR CLOSER 8 Back check valve Control valve Toothed pinion (spindle) Piston Door Closer : Inside Spring Rack & pinion is a gear arrangement which is designed to convert rotary motion into linear motion. When the door is opened, pinion rotates with the help of the arm connected to the door. Springs and oil inside the door closer body get compressed. Springs store energy. Under this condition oil is squeezed from the existing spring side position to the other side, through the hole in the one side of he piston head and through the check valve. When the door is left opened, the compressed springs tend to expand and push the Rack cum piston head to take its original position. This in turn pushes the arm of the door closer & provides the closing action of the door. WORKING MECHANISM OF FLOOR SPRING Floor Spring works on Cam action mechanism. When the door is opened to any one side of the center (which is the normal closed position) the bottom arm fixed to the door rotates the Cam spindle and in turn the cam also rotates. With the rotation of the cam, the cam assembly (connecting rod spring) connected to the piston pulls the piston head. Both the Cylindrical Helical Compression springs and oil get compressed. Springs store energy. Under this condition the oil rushes to the other side of the piston head through the check valve in the piston head If the door is opened till 90 degrees, the cam arrester engages with the arrester pin in the cam assembly. This holds the door at 90 degrees & will remain in the same position as long as it is not disengaged by applying force on the door. In the normal opening of the door i.e. less than 90 degrees, when the door is released, the stored energy in the compressed spring tries to push the piston head. 35 DOOR COORDINATOR Function A door closing coordinator for a pair of oppositely hinged doors where closure of the inactive door withdraws a stopping member from a holding lever for the active door and permits the active door to close after the inactive door.
