4 Driving Distances 1 from OIF/OEF-Deployed Reserve Component ' Home of Record Zip Code to the Nearest VA Facility 2 VA Medical Center Community Based Outpatient Clinic Outpatient Clinic Vet Center Driving distances are based on a calculation that multiplies straight-line distances from zip code centroids by an average speed of 40 mph. This assumption comes from the following article: Luft, Harold & Phibbs, C. (1995). Correlation of travel time on roads versus straight line distance. Medical Care Research & Review. 52:4, Not all VA facilities offer the same range of health care and behavioral health services. are required to register at a VA Medical Center (VAMC) prior to receiving services at a Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) or Outpatient Clinic (OPC). It is not necessary to register at a VAMC to receive services at a Vet Center. Source: Defense Manpower Data Center, as of 12/31/10 Department of Veterans Affairs, as of 7/23/10

5 Technical Information & Descriptions Maps Cartographic boundary files were obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau, Geography Division, Cartographic Products Management Branch [ These files are current as of the 2000 census. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the primary legal divisions for U.S. states are termed counties with the exception of Alaska and Louisiana. Alaska has statistically equivalent entities consisting of census areas, city and boroughs, municipalities, and organized boroughs. In Louisiana, county divisions are termed parishes. Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, and Virginia also include independent cities which are given statistical equivalence to counties. When viewing maps of larger regions, the maps will appear distorted. When projecting a three-dimensional surface onto a two-dimensional surface such as a paper map, distortion is unavoidable. Data Reserve Component deployment and dependent data were provided by the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) and are current as of December 31, Reserve Personnel Data The number of Reserve Component service members reflects the number of reserve personnel deployed in support of OEF/OIF between September 30, 2001 and December 31, A service member is included only if he/she deployed while assigned to a reserve component. This count is unique based on social security number and service/component. An individual member may be counted twice in the totals if he/she served in more than one component during this period. This count was then matched by the zip code reported at the time of activation; therefore, it may appear that a member was activated from a zip code for which no reservists reported being their home of record. This is caused by movement of the reserve personnel not being captured and because the activation and deployment data not being linked by social security number but rather zip code. VA Facility Data VA facility types are presented as listed on the United States Department of Veterans Affairs website [ The website lists four main facility types: VA Medical Centers (VAMCs), Outpatient Clinics (OPCs), Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs), and Vet Centers. Some states do not contain all four of the VA facility types. Not all VA facilities offer the same range of health care and behavioral health services. are required to register at a VAMC prior to receiving services at a CBOC or OPC. It is not necessary to register at a VAMC to receive services at a Vet Center. For more information, please csspdata@unc.edu or call Matt Minnotte at Page 1
