1 Pattern: See patterns attached. My usual pattern is the Lion Brand Yarn pattern I use an N crochet hook, while the pattern calls for K. Also, I edge my shawls by single crocheting 2 or 3 rows around the shawl, which uses about 1/3 of 1 skein. I am trying out the crochet pattern 1 row sc then 3 rows dc using the N crochet hook. I like this pattern a lot; it takes longer to crochet the shawl. (sc = single crochet; dc = double crochet) Yarn Type of Yarn - I usually use Lion Brand-Home Spun yarn. Home Spun yarn is sometimes snaggy and I then need to slow down the speed of my crocheting; others who use Home Spun yarn consider this a moment of accepting the call to slow down their lives versus never using this yarn to which I am like-minded. If you don t care for Home Spun you can use a softer yarn. I have used Wool Ease (also a Lion Brand product) with a smaller crochet hook. Amount of yarn Typically it takes 3 skeins when knitting and 3-4 skeins when crocheting. The goal is to have the shawl wide enough and long enough for the individual. The Knitting Your Shawl pattern mentions 26 x 60 inches for size 11 needles and 30 x 64 inches for size 13 needles. I use 3-1/2 to 4 skeins I have loose tension, and my shawls are around 30 inches wide and inches long. Needles The patterns answer this request for information. Learning to knit/crochet classes typically advise doing a sample before starting the full pattern to check their tension (Gauge, Gauge Swatch) and if their tension is too tight (gauge swatch is smaller than the inches mentioned in the pattern), they should go to the next size up. Crochet: As mentioned above, I am using the N crochet hook for most of my crocheting it is user-friendly to my wrists as I do a lot of keyboarding at work. I also like the tension the N gives me typically each row equals 1 inch, which also means my shawls take less time to make. Knitting: Size 11 for a 26 x 60 inch shawl. Size 13 for 30 x 64

Making a Gauge Swatch Editor s Note: When creating fringe using Homespun please note that because of the texture of the yarn the fringe will fray when cut. If you prefer a non-frayed look you can knot the ends, knit or crochet a fringe, or use hairspray or fray check. SHAWL First Half Ch 51, place marker in third ch from hook to mark st placement. Row 1 (Right side): (dc, ch 2, dc) in sixth ch from hook, *skip next 2 chs, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch; repeat from * across to last 3 chs, skip next 2 chs, dc in last ch: 32 sts and 15 ch2 sps. Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc, now and throughout), turn; (dc, ch 2, dc) in each ch2 sp across to last dc, skip last dc, dc in next ch: 32 dc and 15 ch2 sps. Row 3: Ch 3, turn; (dc, ch 2, dc) in each ch2 sp across to last 2 dc, skip next dc, dc in last dc. Repeat Row 3 until piece measures approximately 36" [91.5 cm] from beginning ch. Finish off. Second Half With right side facing and working in free loops of beginning ch, join yarn with slip st in first ch; ch 3, skip next 2 chs, *(dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch, skip next 2 chs; repeat from * across to marked ch, dc in marked ch: 32 dc and 15 ch2 sps. Repeat Row 3 of First Half until Second Half measures approximately 36" [91.5 cm] from beginning ch Shawl should measure a total of 72" [183 cm]. Finish off.
