1 Summer Learning Now is the time to begin thinking about keeping the brain stimulated as well as the body moving over the summer months. The summer months are a great time to fill in learning gaps or zoom ahead with enrichment activities. Summer is a time for relaxing and having fun, but be sure to balance the fun with the learning! With the activities listed below you ll be able to do just that! Minnesota residents 18 and older can fish free during these days when they accompany an angler younger than 16. City of Cottage Grove Check the City of Cottage Grove website for all sorts of great summer fun. grove.org/recreation Carpenter Nature Center Check out our Preschool story times offered once a month on Fridays from am! Carpenter Nature Center s Preschool Story Times are designed to introduce young children, ages 2 through 5 (with a parent or guardian) to nature in a fun and safe environment. The fun- filled hour of activities includes a nature story, an art or craft project, exploring the outdoors, and observing live animals. Please call to pre- register so we know you re coming. Teddy Bear Park Stillwater Located at South 2nd Street and Nelson Street near downtown Stillwater. The park is open to the public 8 am to 8 pm. The park play equipment is designed for children 7 years of age and younger. B C7A- 67C17D209390} Check the website for a list of summer activities at the Teddy Bear Park. Be sure to walk down to the candy shop once you ve had enough fun at the park. Minnesota Museums: Bakken Museum: Free on the second Saturday each month. Bell Museum of Natural History: Free on Sundays. Minnesota History Center: Each Tuesday night from 5 to 8 p.m., the History Center offers free admission to the museum exhibits. The stores and research library remain open for the evening and visitors can enjoy food and drinks for purchase in Cafe Minnesota. Minnesota Landscape Arboretum: Free all day Thursday in the winter, and free on Thursday evenings from 4.30 p.m. until 8 p.m. or sunset in the summer. Winter is November 1 until April 24. The Arboretum also has free family events and music on Thursday evenings in the summer. Minnesota State Capitol: Tours, held every day, are free. 4 FORESTRY CAMP While interacting with our professional forester, participants will learn about the natural growth of trees, what our city does to maintain the space, issues related to sustainable forest products, forest management techniques, awareness of risk and personal safety when exploring, and an understanding of and respect for nature. Everyone will leave with a souvenir. No registration necessary - meet at the park building. This one-day event is open to anyone interested in fishing or wanting to learn more about fish. There will be live fish displays and games. Youth who participate in our Supervised Playground Program will be bused to Hidden Valley Pond for the day with their staff (no additional cost). 5 Parents, Please remember to read with your children over the summer months. Reading and writing shouldn t stop when school stops! We can prevent summer learning loss and one way to do this is to READ and WRITE throughout the summer months! Efforts should be made during the summer to help children sustain reading skills, practice reading and read for enjoyment. Remember, children need free time in the summer to relax and enjoy the pleasures of childhood. So summer reading should be fun. Following are a few tips to make reading enjoyable for your children this summer: 1. Read aloud together with your child every day. Make it fun by reading outdoors on the front steps, patio, at the beach or park. Also, let your children read to you. 2. Set a good example! Parents must be willing to model behavior for their children. Keep lots of reading material around the house. Turn off the TV and have each person read his or her book, including mom and dad. 3. Read the same book your child is reading and discuss it. This is the way to develop habits of the mind and build capacity for thought and insight. 4. Let kids choose what they want to read! 5. Buy books on tape! Listen to them in the car, or turn off the TV and have the family listen to them together. 6. Take your children to the library regularly. Check the library calendar for special summer reading activities and events. Libraries also provide age appropriate lists for summer reading. 7. Subscribe, in your child's name, to magazines like Sports Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children, or National Geographic World. Encourage older children to read the newspaper and current events magazines, to keep up the reading habit over the summer and develop vocabulary. Ask them what they think about what they've read, and listen to what they say. 8. Ease disappointment over summer separation from a favorite school friend by encouraging them to become pen pals. Present both children with postcards or envelopes that are already addressed and stamped. If both children have access to the internet, is another option. 9. Make trips a way to encourage reading by reading aloud traffic signs, billboards, and notices. Show your children how to read a map, and once you are on the road, let them take turns being the navigator. 10. Encourage children to keep a summer scrapbook. Tape in souvenirs of your family's summer activities picture postcards, ticket stubs, photos. Have your children write the captions and read them and read them aloud as you look at the book together.
