2 ESSAY ON THE CAVE 2 Abstract This is an essay on The Allegory of the Cave, Book VII of The Republic by Plato. It is written to answer the questions of a) What was the authors purpose, b) What strategies has the author(s) used to achieve that purpose, and, c) How effective was the author in achieving that purpose. 3 ESSAY ON THE CAVE 3 Essay on The Allegory of the Cave, Book VII of The Republic by Plato What was Plato s purpose in writing The Allegory of the Cave; what strategies did he use to achieve that purpose, and how effectively did he achieve his purpose? These are the questions this essay addresses. Since the Cave has been read, examined and commented on for over two thousand years, it s difficult to understand what more I could add other than a description comment on others comments. Plato s intent in The Allegory of the Cave appears to be to show the reader: 1) that their point of view is limited by their experience and perception, 2) that the capacity to learn is inherent, if limited, 3) that those who have reached enlightenment, wisdom or learning have an obligation to share it, 4) something of the nature of the good, 5) his view of Socrates perception of himself within the world. Of these, the first is the clearest throughout the work and the last may be the most symbolic within it. Plato used the strategy of a dialogue between his teacher, mentor, Socrates and another student, Glaucon, Plato s brother, to describe and illustrate through story the nature of enlightenment and unenlightenment. Socrates initially describes to Glaucon prisoners seeing, hearing and knowing of nothing but shadows of their keepers cast by firelight in a way to completely disguise the source. He gains Glaucon s agreement that the prisoners accept the reality of those shadows as all of existence and notes how they were able to discern the necessary features of their lives within those shadows, without questioning their nature. Socrates then releases one of them to the outside world where the light is blinding and he is forced up a steep incline while his eyes begin to adjust to the light. He begins to see clearly the nature of reality and realize the falseness of his life, thoughts and beliefs about reality within the cave as well as the betterment of his condition of seeing the real world as it is. And if he were returned, he
4 ESSAY ON THE CAVE 4 would not be satisfied although his fellow prisoners would think him the fool for not recognizing the reality of shadows on the wall. Socrates then discusses questions of the nature of the good, the state, the prisoners, the philosopher and more; as well as the requirements of the philosopher, the now enlightened released, former prisoner. Plato succeeds in his intent by generating numerous questions around the nature of reality, enlightenment, the philosopher, the prisoners, the fire, the sun and more. The clearest question is whether anyone can say if they are looking at shadows or reality. Like Neo in the Matrix, reality may not be what you think it is; it may be nothing more than a shadow of real life. But then again, only scientists deal with the nature of reality that is always being questioned and recreated based on measured results. When we find that our universe it nothing but a tear in eye of a rather non-sentient being of an enormity we cannot fathom, the position of being the prisoner or the escapee may only be relative to some unknown point in a different time. We are looking at shadows and calling them real seems to be the nature of the history of our limited human intellect. That we find some point of realization, only to discover that the process of realizing it was just another shadow, is the reason people love comedy. There is no escape. Plato s story does seem to indicate the identity of the released prisoner to be Socrates telling his autobiographical tale to Glaucon. His journey to become a philosopher, though memorable in both its telling and the ideas he left behind, was just as well received by the Greeks as his philosopher s depiction of reality to the remaining prisoners living in a world of shadow. They obviously did not like his truth even if was truer than theirs. As far as effectiveness, from what little research I ve done, The Cave is one of the most significant dialogues of Plato s. It has permeated and instigated thought on the nature of
5 ESSAY ON THE CAVE 5 philosophy, reality, truth, the good and more for centuries. And, like any good work, it has been the underlying basis of other stories, like The Matrix, that have borrowed its premise. References Plato, The Allegory of the Cave, Book VII of The Republic, approximately 380 BC.
