Chapter 4: Input and Output TRUE/FALSE 1. Notebook and netbook computers usually have a keyboard that is similar to a desktop keyboard, but it is typically smaller. T PTS: 1 REF: In addition to a keyboard, most PCs today have some type of online storage system. F PTS: 1 REF: A graphics tablet is typically connected to a computer via a USB port. T PTS: 1 REF: A graphics tablet is also called a digitizing tablet. T PTS: 1 REF: Automating the data entry process is referred to as source data automation. T PTS: 1 REF: When scanning, lower resolution is acceptable if the image is to be enlarged significantly or if only one part of the image is to be extracted and enlarged. F PTS: 1 REF: One-dimension (1D) barcodes contain data only vertically. F PTS: 1 REF: Portable barcode readers are always used in point-of-sale (POS) systems. F PTS: 1 REF: RFID tags need to be within line of sight of a reader. F PTS: 1 REF: Optical character recognition (OCR) is a technology confined primarily to the banking industry, where it is used to facilitate high-volume processing of checks. F PTS: 1 REF: When comparing the zoom capabilities of a digital camera, look for optical zoom, not digital zoom, specifications. T PTS: 1 REF: 146

12. The number of digital photos that can be stored in a camera at one time depends only on the capacity of the storage medium being used. F PTS: 1 REF: Digital video cameras include digital camcorders and small digital video cameras used in conjunction with computers and other devices. T PTS: 1 REF: A display device is the most common form of output device. T PTS: 1 REF: CRT monitors use digital signals to display images, which allows for sharper images. F PTS: 1 REF: Display device size is measured diagonally from corner to corner, in contrast to the way TV screens are measured. F PTS: 1 REF: Recent improvements in flat-screen display technology and graphics processing have led to several emerging multi-tasking output devices. F PTS: 1 REF: Each pixel on an LCD display emits light in the necessary color. F PTS: 1 REF: PHOLED technology is especially appropriate for use on mobile devices, consumer electronics, and other devices where power consumption is an important concern. T PTS: 1 REF: Instead of the temporary, ever-changing hard copy output that a monitor produces, printers produce soft copy. F PTS: 1 REF: 159 MODIFIED TRUE/FALSE 1. Display devices are used to select and manipulate objects, to input certain types of data (such as handwritten data), and to issue commands to the computer. F, Pointing PTS: 1 REF: 131

2. With handwriting recognition, the computer interprets handwritten pen input as individual characters. T PTS: 1 REF: Graphics tablets are often used in conjunction with image editing software to create original images or to modify digital photographs. T PTS: 1 REF: Optical marks are characters specifically designed to be identifiable by humans as well as by some type of optical character recognition (OCR) device. F, Optical characters PTS: 1 REF: Optical zoom specifications reflect how much the camera can zoom without losing image quality. T PTS: 1 REF: A(n) joystick is a set of headphones with a built-in microphone. F, headset PTS: 1 REF: A system used to enable a computer to recognize voice input as spoken words is a(n) speech recognition system. T PTS: 1 REF: The video card or the integrated graphics component determines the graphics capabilities of the computer. T PTS: 1 REF: LCD displays use layers of organic material which, when electric current is applied, emits a visible light. F OLED Organic light emitting diode Organic light emitting diode (OLED) OLED (Organic light emitting diode) PTS: 1 REF: LCD displays do not use backlighting, which makes them energy efficient and lengthens the battery life of portable devices using these displays.

F OLED Organic light emitting diode Organic light emitting diode (OLED) OLED (Organic light emitting diode) PTS: 1 REF: TOLED displays are transparent and can emit light toward the top and bottom of the display surface. 11 5. are used in point-of-sale (POS) systems and are useful for on-the-job applications that require users to wear gloves, or where using a keyboard or mouse is otherwise impractical. Touch screens PTS: 1 REF: A(n) takes up less desk space than a mouse and is easier for some users to manipulate. trackball PTS: 1 REF: The accompanying figure depicts a portable. scanner PTS: 1 REF: A(n) captures the image of a usually flat object (such as a printed document, photograph, or drawing) in digital form and then transfers that data to a PC. scanner optical scanner PTS: 1 REF: The text in a scanned image cannot be edited unless software is used in conjunction with the scanner to input the scanned text as individual text characters. OCR optical character recognition optical character recognition (OCR) OCR (optical character recognition) PTS: 1 REF: Barcodes are read with.

barcode readers PTS: 1 REF: , which contain tiny chips and radio antennas, can be attached to objects that need to be tracked. RFID tags PTS: 1 REF: is the science of identifying individuals based on measurable biological characteristics. Biometrics PTS: 1 REF: Although other factors also affect the quality of digital photographs, the number of does impact how large digital photos can be printed. pixels PTS: 1 REF: is the process of entering audio data into the computer. Audio input PTS: 1 REF: Because the output appears temporarily on a display device, it is sometimes referred to as. soft copy PTS: 1 REF: displays form images by manipulating electronically charged chemicals or gases sandwiched between thin panes of glass or other transparent material. Flat-panel PTS: 1 REF: provide a connection to a monitor, as well as determine video capabilities. Video cards PTS: 1 REF: 153

18. LCD panels used with computer monitors typically include at least one fluorescent light inside the panel, usually at the rear of the display a technique referred to as. backlighting PTS: 1 REF: consists of a display device onto which written content is displayed in electronic form, but that is thinner and more paper-like than other types of display devices. E-paper Electronic paper Electronic paper (e-paper) E-paper (electronic paper) PTS: 1 REF: displays use a layered technology like LCD and OLEDs, but they use a layer of gas between two plates of glass instead of liquid crystals or organic material. Plasma PTS: 1 REF: 158 ESSAY 1. Describe the common features and unique benefits of trackballs. Similar to an upside-down mechanical mouse, a trackball has the ball mechanism on top, instead of on the bottom. The ball is rotated with the thumb, hand, or finger to move the onscreen pointer. Because the device itself does not need to be moved, trackballs take up less space on the desktop than mice; they also are easier to use for individuals with limited hand or finger mobility. PTS: 1 REF: 137 TOP: Critical Thinking 2. What is a touch pad? A touch pad is a rectangular pad across which a fingertip or thumb slides to move the onscreen pointer. The buttons that appear next to the touch pad surface are used to perform clicks and other mouse actions; often the pad can be tapped to make selections, as well. Although most often found on notebook computer keyboards, touch pads are also available as stand-alone devices to be used with desktop computers and are built into some keyboards. PTS: 1 REF: 137 TOP: Critical Thinking 3. Describe the common features and uses of portable scanners.

Portable scanners are designed to capture text and other data while on the go. Some are full-page portable scanners that can capture images of an entire document (such as a printed document or receipt) encountered while on the go; others are handheld scanners designed to capture text one line at a time. In either case, the scanner is typically powered by batteries, the scanned content is stored in the scanner, and the content is transferred to a computer (via a cable or a wireless connection) when needed. Some handheld scanners can also be used to translate scanned text from one language to another. PTS: 1 REF: 140 TOP: Critical Thinking 4. How do digital cameras work? Digital cameras work much like conventional film cameras, but instead of recording images on film they record them on a digital storage medium, such as a flash memory card, digital tape cartridge, built-in hard drive, or DVD disc. PTS: 1 REF: 146 TOP: Critical Thinking 5. How do color and monochrome displays form colors? Display devices form images by lighting up the proper configurations of pixels (the smallest colorable areas on a display device essentially tiny dots on a display screen). A variety of technologies can be used to light up the appropriate pixels needed to display a particular image, as discussed shortly. Display devices can be monochrome displays (in which each pixel can only be one of two colors, such as black or white) or color displays (in which each pixel can display a combination of three colors red, green, and blue in order to display a large range of colors).
