1 The GreaT War Week TW0 Due OcTOber 19Th SecTiOn One: LiTeraTure all QuieT On The WeSTern FrOnT 1. Read chapters Again this week, try to determine Remarque s worldview. A worldview is what a person believes about God, man and the purpose of life? Look for clues as you read, remembering that you will be able to tell what he thinks about these things through how me makes his characters act and think. Who are the heroes, the villains? How does the protagonist feel about life and how is he portrayed this will help you find out what the author thinks. This week you are find three (4 for the seniors!) excerpts that reveal the author s worldview. Page number & quote Explain how this explains the worldview Your opinion about this agree, disagree? Why? Comments. 1

2 3. VOCABULARY - All Quiet on the Western Front contains many words and expressions that are not in common use today. However, that does not mean you cannot make a good guess at the meaning from the context! In this week s reading find at least 4 four words that you are unfamiliar with. From the context make a guess as to what the word means. Then and only then, look up the word and write its meaning. How close were you? Word & page number Your guess Definition 4. LITERARY ANALYSIS - Remarque often uses vivid images as well as symbols in his description of a soldier s life at the front. An image refers to something that can be perceived by the senses (smell, sight, etc.). A symbol is something an object, place, character, or action that stands for something else. Skim the text to find two passages that contain striking images or symbols. Write each of the passages on a separate sheet of paper along with the page number. For each sentence briefly discuss what the author is trying to show the reader and how effective the image or symbol was. 5. Why are Paul and his company moving back to the front? How does the battle progress over the two weeks the company spends at the front? 6. When Paul tells Kemmerich s mother about her son s death, why is he surprised at her grief? 7. At the training camp, what sights seem to soothe Paul s mind? What thoughts does Paul have as he observes the Russian prisoners of war? How does Paul s classmate Mittelstaedt taunt and humiliate Kantorek? Do you think this treatment of Kantorek is justified? Explain. 8. When people are under severe stress or dealing with strong negative emotions, they often fall back on certain coping strategies. Also called defense mechanisms, these strategies may temporarily protect a person from painful situations or thoughts, but they usually do not work as long-term solutions. Common coping strategies include denial, or refusing to recognize an emotion or problem; compensation, or making up for a weakness in one area by excelling in another; daydreaming, or inventing situations to escape unpleasant facts; displacement, or transferring emotions from the true source to some other thing or person; rationalization, or making excuses for one s actions or feelings; and regression, or returning to immature behavior to express emotions. Find at least two examples of these strategies as used by Paul or other characters in the novel. List the page number, the strategy and a description of what the character did. 2

3 Paul says that every soldier believes in Chance and trusts his luck. If you were a soldier in combat, do you think you would find yourself trusting chance or trusting something else instead? Do you feel differently about chance as it relates to your everyday life? Explain. SecTiOn TWO: history WOrLD War One 1. Listen to the video on the website. 2. Read pages in Streams of Civilization. 3. Read pages in World History. 4. Make a list of 4 new weapons used in World War One. Include a brief description of the weapon and attach a picture of it and how they affected the way war was waged. 5. Describe trench warfare. 6. How did World War 1 become total war? 7. Why did the war turn into a stalemate? 8. Describe kind of war took place at sea? 9. What role did Europe s overseas colonies play in the war? 10. Governments on both sides tried to keep the people at home from knowing the staggering numbers of dead and wounded. Why do you think they did this? 11. How was propaganda used by the nations in this war? Find one political cartoon from this era on the web that could be called propaganda (information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etc.) and paste it onto your homework page. Write a one or two sentence description of what the cartoon is about. Explain how the poster propaganda. Is propaganda used today? Give at least one example. (hint: look on Facebook) How can you avoid being affected by propaganda? Example: This is a highly romanticized picture of Kaiser Wilhelm pinning a medal on a German soldier. War was pictured to the German people as a glorious and honorable thing. The angel in the background is the spirit of Germany. These types of pictures were made to encourage young men to join the war. 3

4 SecTiOn Three: MeeT The PreSS WOrLD War One PrOjecT DUE THIS WEEK: Final draft of your written script of questions and answers in script form. Use the sample page for how to format your script. Please pay attention to voice and tone this interview should portray emotion (humor, sadness, anger, etc.) as well as information! Include how the actor should say his lines. o First page has the title of the script in ALL CAPS halfway down the page. Double space and type By Your Name (only capitalizing first letters). o Second page starts script. Give any directions needed for how people are to sit or stand as the interview starts. List any props needed as well o Start writing the questions and answers making it sound like a real conversation. Use the sample page for formatting. o Include directions in the script for when to use video footage, maps, props, etc. Gather props, pictures, costumes, etc. Make a list of what you will use for the interview and bring the list to class for approval. Begin practicing the interview. 4
