1 Helsinki, Finland, February 2012 Welcome to Finland 2013! Finland Finland and the Finnish way of life have been influenced by the country s location between East and West. For five centuries Finland was a part of Sweden, then for a hundred years of Russia, and you can still see clear traces of this as you look about you. In 1906 Finland succeeded in establishing a new constitution based on equal and universal suffrage: Finnish women were the first in Europe, and second in the world after New Zealand, to be given the vote. After the October Revolution in Russia in 1917 Finland declared itself independent. The most important recent change in Finland s position in Europe took place at the beginning of 1995, when Finland joined the European Union. Finland is also a member of the EMU-countries. Finland s landscape is dominated by forests and lakes, but there is geographical variety from the unique archipelago of the southern and western coastlines to the rolling mountains and pristine rivers of Lapland. The population is just over five million, which makes Finland one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. Tampere, The City of Tampere was established by King of Sweden Gustav III in 1779, on the banks of The Tammerkoski rapids. Tampere has been an industrial pioneer in Finland since the very beginning. Finland s first paper mill started operation in 1783, and the first paper machine was engaged at the J.C. Frenckell & Son s factory in Tampere is today the third largest city in Finland and the largest inland centre in the Nordic countries. Currently there are over 213,000 inhabitants in Tampere, and close to half a million inhabitants in the Tampere Region which comprises Tampere and its neighbouring municipalities. Tampere is one of the three most rapidly developing regions in Finland. It is a centre of cutting-edge technology, research, education, culture, sports and business.

2 Varala Sports Institute, Varala is a pioneer among sports institutes in Finland; it was founded in 1909 to be a gymnastics centre for women. Today Varala Sports Institute is a versatile and active sport and education centre that is open to everyone. Varala Sports Institute operates under the authority of the Ministry of Education and is owned by the Varala Foundation. Varala is located in Tampere - next to the world's tallest gravel ridge Pyynikinharju, on the shore of Lake Pyhäjärvi and only three kilometres from Tampere city centre. Accommodation at Varala There are 150 beds. The rooms have mostly two beds, only a few are single rooms. The rooms have a toilet, shower, TV, clock radio, drying closet, towels and sheets. 3 Workshop themes Workshop I: (Germany, Denmark) Sitting Dance, Dances near the Chair or with a walker/rollator There are many elderly people, who need a chair or a rollator to be able to dance. In this workshop we will do Sitting Dances and also show you creative ideas for Dances near the Chair and with a walker. These fairly new kinds of dancing allow people to dance on their feet with the security of a chair or walker to hold on to in case of need. In many cases it can well be combined with sitting dances. Workshop II: (Finland) Balance training: Balance is an important subject to all senior dancers. In this workshop participants have an opportunity to get to know some fun and practical balance exercises. Workshop III: (Finland) Finnish Tango and Humppa: Tango and Humppa are an essential part of Finnish summer and dance pavilion culture. Participants will get to know the basics of these dances in the guidance of enthusiastic dance teachers. Tours and other activities Tuesday Sightseeing in Tampere This guided tour offers a comfortable and convenient way to get acquainted with the entire city in two hours: blue lakes, dramatic ridges and key sights from Tampere Hall to Tampere Cathedral. We will see for example the Pyynikki and Pispala ridges, the Tampella and Finlayson factory areas and the city centre. Departure points for sightseeing tours are Varala sports center and hotel Rosendahl. The guide is waiting for the group at hotel Rosendahl. Wednesday Exercise, relaxation and sauna Wednesday night can be enjoyed with many relaxing varieties. There is a guided Nordic walking tour with optional walking sticks. You can take a fun nature walk including inspiring tasks concerning nature and physical activity. The exercise facilities are free to use and the sauna on the beach is warm all night. You can take a swim in the lake straight from the sauna!

4 Thursday A boat-trip and Finnish evening in Viikinsaari On Thursday evening it will be time to relax together in the true summer atmosphere on Viikinsaari, a beautiful green island not far from the Varala sport centre. A short boat trip will start and end the evening. During the evening you will get familiar with Finnish outdoor dancing, lavatanssit, a typical Finnish way to enjoy a beautiful summer evening. We kindly ask you to dress casual and warm enough for outdoor activities. Delicious Finnish crêpes with coffee or tea and a small snack in the evening are served on the island.

5 Participation fee - in a double room: 670,00 Euros / participant - in a single room: 880,00 Euros / participant The price includes the whole programme with room and board, and also a CD and photograph. Spouse s participation and fees Because some people have inquired about taking their spouse to Tampere, we have reserved accommodation for this purpose. However, the spouses cannot participate in the actual congress program of the ISDC We can offer them accommodation with buffet breakfast and participation in the after dinner programs on Tuesday - Thursday. The spouses will not be counted into the quota. - in a double room 335,00 Euros / person - in a single room 545,00 Euros / person The price includes accommodation and buffet breakfast between and the after dinner programs on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Participants coming with their spouses will be accommodated at the Scandic Hotel Rosendahl.
