2 Courage is not the absence of fear, it is the realization that there is something more important than fear. If you want to help people, work well with others, enjoy learning and are physically fit, you may be an ideal candidate for a firefighter position with the Six Nations Fire Department. This guide outlines the recruitment process for the Six Nations Fire Department s Probationary Firefighters and the requirements to be met at each step of the process. The Firefighter's Job The position of a Firefighter with the Six Nations Fire Department is both challenging and rewarding. We are a very busy fire service and our firefighter s skills & knowledge are utilized on a daily basis. Apart from fighting fires, you will perform many duties, some of which include: Training Performing rescue work Carbon monoxide/fire alarms Educating the public about fire prevention Responding to emergency hazardous material situations Conducting inspections Responding to medical emergencies Responding to motor vehicle accidents Ice & Water Rescue You must be physically fit to handle the sustained, intense, physical effort often required to perform these duties. Teamwork is everything, whether it is sharing routine tasks at the fire station or providing fire fighting services at an emergency scene, firefighters depend on each other to successfully perform their duties. As team members, firefighters work together in close quarters. All team members are responsible for station housekeeping. When not responding to calls or performing other duties, a significant amount of time is spent training, inspecting, cleaning and maintaining personal protective gear and other firefighting equipment. Fire fighting is not a 9-to-5 job. It is a 24 hour a day, seven day a week public service. It involves working weekends and holidays. As a Six Nations Firefighter, you will respond at all hours of a given day, for anything you can imagine. Employee Assistance Program As a result of the stresses which you will encounter as a member of the Six Nations Fire Department, we also provide debriefing sessions and access to employee assistance programs which can provide counselling for not only yourself but your immediate family as well. Extra-Curricular Activities Family Gatherings Firefighter Competition Team Fundraising Activities Public Events
3 Education & Training that we provide 1000 s of people each year apply/attend the pre-service firefighter training program at provincial community colleges, private colleges and some even leave the province to travel as far as Alberta and Texas to attain the certifications of NFPA 1001 Level I & II, NFPA 472. The student cost for tuition, textbooks, uniforms, equipment and cost of living while completing these training programs is anywhere between $10,000 -$25,000 dollars. With the Six Nations Fire Department our basic permanent Firefighter position requires you to at a minimum be certified to the NFPA 1001 Level1, NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials and Emergency First Responder level. In addition to this you will also be required to successfully complete the Automated External Defibrillation program. As we are licensed by a physician to perform the act of defibrillation, we are also subject to any ongoing training requirements as a part of their quality assurance programs. Upon successful completion of your probationary firefighter period with the Six Nations Fire Department, you will be required to attend and successfully complete the following in house training programs: NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level I & II (OFM & Proboard Accredited) NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials (OFM & Proboard Accredited) Emergency First Responder Program (Canadian Red Cross Accredited) As a part of our succession & retention programs we also offer the following accredited training programs: NFPA 1041 Instructor Level I & II NFPA Fire Officer Level I There are too many external training opportunities to list, but here are a few examples of the programs which our fire personnel have attended/completed on a regular basis as members of the Six Nations Fire Department. We take pride in the fact that we have had numerous members of our fire service go onto various emergency service careers such as: Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, Firefighter, Paramedic Operations Manager, Paramedic Supervisor, Flight Paramedic, Advanced Care Paramedic, Primary Care Paramedic, and Police Officer. Some members have completed our training and have moved on other careers, but many still to this day maintain positions, serving the Six Nations Community.
