If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with cancer, it can be a confusing time. Questions may be swirling around you such as: Can I receive state-of-the-art care here? What are the treatment options, and what do they mean? What support is there for me and my family? At Kadlec, we are here to help. Not only will you receive the best possible care from a team of compassionate professionals, we also want to help you sort out all your questions and concerns so your energy can be focused on fighting the cancer. We also view cancer care as a continuum of care beginning with education and screening, continuing through diagnosis, staging and treatment, and ongoing through recovery and support. This coordinated approach helps you throughout your journey with cancer.

Kadlec s Oncology Program has earned three-year accreditation with commendation by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. This accreditation assures care that meets the highest standards. Only one in four hospitals that treat cancer receives this special approval. Receiving care at a Commission on Cancerapproved cancer program ensures that a patient will have access to: Quality care close to home. State-of-the-art services and equipment. A multi-specialty team approach to coordinate the best treatment options available to cancer patients. Information about cancer clinical trials, education and support. Lifelong patient follow-up through a cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results. Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care.

A Key Piece No matter where your care is being provided, one of the first places you can go for help is the Patient Navigation Service at the Tri-Cities Cancer Center. Through this one central service, the nurse navigators are there to support and guide you throughout your care, walking with you and your family on this journey. They offer information on local services and, if people need assistance, they can also help make arrangements outside the community. The Patient Navigation Service can be accessed anytime during cancer treatment. The service is available Monday Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; on nights and on weekends, calls will be handled by an answering machine. Patient Navigation Service (509)

Screening There is no doubt that early detection is a key to the successful treatment of cancer. At Kadlec, we offer a wide range of screening services from imaging to genetic counseling. Mammography (509) The American Cancer Society recommends that women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. The mammogram, breast ultrasound and/or breast MRI help identify and evaluate cysts, tumors, lesions or other abnormalities, often before a growth can be felt during a self-exam. Kadlec offers all-digital screening and diagnostic mammography, sterotactic and ultrasound-guided biopsies. MRI-guided breast biopsy is available at the hospital. Financial assistance for mammograms is available through Kadlec Foundation. Self-referral or by physician referral. High-Risk Breast Screening Program (509) Kadlec s High-Risk Breast Screening Program is the region s only specialized program to help identify and monitor women with elevated risk for developing breast cancer. The five-step program combines knowledge, medical skills and patient education with the best surveillance and diagnostic methods to help assess and act upon individual risk. Early identification of risk allows a woman to create an appropriate screening and management plan. Physician referral required. Referrals may be faxed to (509)

Genetic Counselor (509) A board-certified and licensed genetic counselor is available to help determine the likelihood of a hereditary predisposition to cancer. Kadlec s cancer risk assessment program provides counseling and testing to help patients make informed medical decisions based on their own personal risk assessment. People may benefit from genetic counseling if they have a personal and/or family history that includes multiple relatives on the same side of the family with the same or related types of cancer; a diagnosis of cancer at an early age (before age 45 for breast cancer or before 50 for colon cancer); multiple cancer diagnoses in the same individual; rare cancers; or a family history of a known, altered cancer-predisposition gene. By physician referral. BioImpedance Scan (509) When a woman has been diagnosed with unilateral (one-sided) breast cancer, her physician can refer her to Kadlec for a BioImpedance scan prior to surgery. This scan measures the lymph fluid volume in both arms prior to surgery. Follow-up scans can then be performed at regular intervals following surgery to track for the beginning stages of lymphedema in the affected arm. By physician referral. Skin Cancer Screening (509) 942-DOCS ( ) Skin cancer is the number one cancer diagnosed in the United States. Kadlec Clinic Plastic Surgery offers full-body skin cancer screening. A thorough visual exam from a qualified health professional is important to identify skin cancers early when most treatable. Self-referral or by physician referral. 7

Diagnosis Kadlec s highly-skilled staff uses some of the most advanced medical equipment and technologies to assist with diagnosis. All require a physician referral. Diagnostic Imaging (509) Our board-certified radiologists and certified technologists provide a comprehensive range of diagnostic radiology services. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses radio waves and a powerful magnet to create detailed pictures (shown on a computer screen) of areas inside the body. These images can show the difference between normal and diseased tissue. MRI yields better images of organs and soft tissue than other scanning techniques, such as CT or x-ray. Kadlec s MRI services are located at the main medical center as well as the Outpatient Imaging Center. Computed Tomography/Positron Electron Tomography (CT/PET) combines in a single session the ability of the CT scan to show exactly where an abnormality has developed, with a molecular imaging technique that can detect metabolic changes at a very early stage. The PET can differentiate between benign and malignant growths. CT/PET is available at the Outpatient Imaging Center. Ultrasound uses sound waves with frequencies above those humans can hear. The sound waves travel into the body, bouncing off organs and tissues to make echoes. The echo patterns form a picture 8

(sonogram) of the internal organs and body tissues and can show tumors. It also can guide doctors doing biopsies or treating tumors. Gamma Camera imaging uses radioactive peptides and antibodies to image different organs. The nuclear medicine department offers treatments for prostate and thyroid cancer, in addition to therapies for cancers that have spread to the bones. Non-surgical Breast Biopsy (509) When abnormalities have been detected in the breast, Kadlec offers methods of obtaining tissue samples without surgery: ultrasoundguided biopsy, stereotactic (x-ray) guided and MRI-guided biopsy. These procedures are done at Kadlec s Outpatient Imaging Center. Advanced Breast Care Center (509) Kadlec s Advanced Breast Care Center is devoted exclusively to the early diagnosis of breast disease. The Center also provides an information library and acts as a resource for women diagnosed with breast cancer. Pathology Our board-certified pathologists perform state-of-the-art testing, which is essential for defining and staging the extent of disease. Laboratory Tests (509) Lab tests are done on a regular basis for most patients, and provide information that may affect your treatment plan. Kadlec has outpatient lab services located near the Vineyard Lobby at the main medical center. 9

Treatment Depending upon what type and stage of cancer, treatment can include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or a combination of treatments. Surgical Oncology Surgery is often part of overall cancer treatment. Many patients are initially referred by their primary care provider to a surgeon. These specialists are highly skilled at evaluating suspicious findings on a physical exam and making a diagnosis, usually by performing a biopsy. They may, if appropriate, recommend removal of the tumor surgically, and they often work with other cancer specialists to combine treatment methods. Surgery also helps with diagnosis, staging and relieving symptoms. Surgeons at Kadlec perform some of the most advanced procedures available to treat cancer including minimally-invasive surgery. Chemotherapy Outpatient (509) Inpatient (509) , ext Chemotherapy is the use of specific drugs to destroy cancer cells. This form of treatment can be given alone, in conjunction with radiation therapy, or following a surgical procedure. Chemotherapy is carefully customized for each patient. At Kadlec, the treatment can be administered on an inpatient or outpatient basis, depending on your physician s treatment plan. Only nurses with specialized training and certification by the Oncology Nursing Society administer chemotherapy. 10

Radiation Therapy Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays or particles to kill cancer cells. Their radiation source may come from outside of the body from beams aimed at the cancer or from a source implanted inside the body (interventional radiology). Kadlec offers interventional radiology services at the medical center. External radiation is available at the Tri-Cities Cancer Center and Northwest CancerClinic. Pediatric Oncology Kadlec now offers some pediatric oncology services in cooperation with Seattle Children s Hospital. Once the initial treatment is completed in Seattle (usually six months), maintenance treatments are available at Kadlec, saving families time, stress and money. Nutrition Counseling Proper nutrition enhances the effectiveness of treatment, speeds recovery and contributes to vitality and independence. Recommendations about nutrition are designed to help build strength to assist patients with the effects of cancer and its treatment. Kadlec s highly-trained Nutrition Counselors are located in the Diabetes Learning/Nutrition Counseling Center. Wound Care The Wound Healing Center at Kadlec is qualified to assist you by providing state-of-the-art, high quality, cost effective care of acute and chronic wounds. Our program is based on scientific principles and will result in an improved rate of healing and a positive impact on patients quality of life. Our team of trained physicians, nurses and technicians are dedicated to the management of chronic, non-healing wounds including those from surgery or trauma. 11

A candidate for the Wound Healing Center is any person who has a wound, acute or chronic, that is not showing signs of healing after two weeks, as well as patients with complicated surgical or traumatic wounds. Interventional Pain Management (509) Pain management is important for recovery as well as comfort. Kadlec Neuroscience Center provides a variety of pain control treatments and will work with patients to receive optimal relief caused by the illness or treatment. Reconstructive Surgery (509) 942-DOCS ( ) Kadlec Clinic Plastic Surgery offers breast reconstruction, expanding implant reconstructions, etc; primary surgery for skin cancers including basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas and melanomas; and more. Kadlec s plastic surgeon is board-certified with extensive training in complicated reconstructive procedures. Tumor Conference/Cancer Committee Kadlec s Tumor Conference is a multidisciplinary group of physicians that meets on a regular basis to review cancer cases. The use of multidisciplinary tumor conference consultations can ensure that the cancer patient has access to the best current thinking about cancer management. At Kadlec, our interdisciplinary Cancer Committee is charged with reaching the goals for our Comprehensive Community Cancer Program. Team members represent diagnostic and treatment services as well as administrative, clinical and supportive services. 12

Support Services Effective cancer care includes not only treatment, but also other important services you will find at Kadlec. Clinical Resource Management (509) Social Work and Nurse Case Management Cancer affects your life and your family. Our Social Workers and Nurse Case Managers can help address medical and non-medical needs including long-term planning. They can help find support groups, counseling or other related services. They can answer the questions, solve the problems and do everything they can to help those impacted by cancer understand, adjust to and cope with the disease. Chaplains (509) Our chaplains, who are affiliated with The Chaplaincy, are available to help you with your spiritual needs and to assist your family. Kadlec has a chaplain on site at all times. They will also notify your pastor, priest, rabbi or spiritual advisor of your hospital stay at your request. Hospice Hospice care is specifically for individuals with a life-limiting illness whose goals focus on comfort and care rather than a cure. Hospice care is available to adults, children and infants. Hospice helps by managing physical symptoms and keeping one comfortable; 13

providing emotional and/or spiritual support for patients and loved ones; helping with your daily living activities; providing education about patient care, the disease process and changes which may occur in the patient s condition; and providing bereavement support to patients and loved ones. Hospice Care in this region is provided by The Chaplaincy which can be reached at (509) and Lower Valley Hospice and Palliative Care which can be reached at (509) or Toll Free: Child Life Specialist (509) , ext Illness can be very frightening for children. Kadlec has a certified Child Life Specialist who works with children to cope with the stress and anxiety of illness and hospitalization whether it is their own or that of a family member. This specialist is available for both inpatients and outpatients. The service is also available to support parents through their child s illness. Therapy Services Department (509) Sometimes it is necessary for those with cancer to strengthen their bodies or relearn skills that may have been affected by the disease, treatment or surgery. We offer physical, occupational, speech, massage and swallowing therapies. Physical Therapy (PT) helps each individual reach his or her maximum potential for independence in functional activities. Kadlec s professionals provide services within accredited inpatient and outpatient programs and specialize in treating a variety of orthopedic, neurological and medical problems for adults and children. The therapists implement treatment programs that include exercises to increase strength, range of motion, coordination and endurance. Occupational Therapy (OT) helps improve a patient s ability to perform tasks in daily living and working environments. With OT people regain, develop and build skills that are essential for independent 14

functioning, health and well-being. Kadlec Regional Medical Center s licensed OT team offers a broad range of services to meet a wide variety of adult and pediatric needs. We utilize functional therapeutic activities to assist the patient in regaining muscle strength, coordination, joint range of motion and physical endurance. Speech-Language Therapy provides individualized services and stateof-the-art approaches designed to facilitate communicative independence and improve functional outcomes following cancer treatment. Massage Therapy has been shown to improve functioning of the circulatory, lymphatic and nervous systems and may improve the rate at which the body recovers from injury and illness. It can be used as part of the treatment plan to help decrease pain, anxiety, depression, fatigue and nausea. Provided by licensed massage therapists, this service has been found to enhance a sense of well-being. Inpatient massage therapy is available to all Kadlec patients including our inpatient oncology patients. Outpatient massage therapy options include deep tissue, hot stone, myofascial release, rehabilitation, relaxation and trigger-point therapy. Some Kadlec massage therapists have specialized training in oncology. Swallowing Therapy is available to help restore function with eating and swallowing after cancer treatment. Kadlec offers therapists certified in retraining the muscles of the mouth and throat. Treatment options include VitalStim, an FDA-approved therapy that uses neuromuscular electrical stimulation or small electrical currents to stimulate the muscles responsible for swallowing. With repeated therapy, muscles are re-educated to restore the swallowing function. Lymphedema Treatment (509) Lymphedema is an accumulation of lymphatic fluid and proteins that causes swelling, usually in the arms or legs but can occur in any part of the body. The swelling develops from changes in lymphatic flow that can result following cancer surgery or radiation treatments. 15

Kadlec has certified lymphedema therapists in the physical therapy department. These therapists work with you to provide skin care, manual lymph drainage, compression bandaging with progression to a compression garment as needed, individualized education and a personalized home program to help manage your condition. Garment fitting occurs once the patient has reached a maintenance level. Physician referral is required for treatment. Healthy Steps (509) Healthy Steps (also known as the LeBed Method) is an exercise program designed by two physicians and a dance specialist to help patients regain range of motion, improve lymphatic function and promote emotional well-being. Kadlec offers Healthy Steps programs taught by certified instructors and scholarships may be available. Weight Lifting Class (509) Research has shown that exercise, when used appropriately, can be an important component in managing symptoms related to cancer and its treatment, in improving physical function and in improving quality of life. Kadlec offers a class specifically designed for women who have undergone breast cancer treatment and may also have problems with lymphedema. Each participant is closely monitored by a certified lymphedema therapist. Scholarships are available. Wellness Program (509) Kadlec s Wellness Program, a part of Outpatient Services, provides individuals with an experienced health coach who gives personalized, one-on-one support to identify and reduce health risk. No physician referral is required. 16

American Cancer Society Resource Center (509) The Cancer Resource Center is located in the Health Resource Center on the fourth floor of the River Pavilion and is operated by American Cancer Society volunteers. These volunteers are ready to bring help right to those who need it. The goal of the program is to provide valuable information to patients and families. The center is also open to people who are seeking information and resources, but are not Kadlec patients. Health Resource Center (509) Kadlec s Health Resource Center is located on the fourth floor of the River Pavilion in the main medical center. It includes computer kiosks, printers, handouts and other resources. It is available not only to patients and families, but to the community as well. In addition, Kadlec has partnered with the Richland Public Library to create a consumer health section at the Richland library. It includes books recommended by the national Planetree organization. The CaringBridge When someone is dealing with a serious health event, it s often hard to keep loved ones updated. And, for family and friends, it can be difficult, but so important, to communicate love and support. CaringBridge, available at Kadlec, provides free, private websites that connect family and friends to share information, love and support during a serious health event, treatment and recovery. For more information, visit the CaringBridge website at Foundation Support (509) Kadlec Foundation has long supported cancer patients and their families with equipment purchases, program support and assisting families with expenses. 17

Patient Financial Services With our knowledge of the complexities of health care financing, we can ease the economic stress that often accompanies cancer care, treatment and recovery. Insurance Coverage Questions - (509) We have a team dedicated to working with our patients to interpret insurance coverage, verify insurance eligibility and benefits, notify the insurance company and obtain authorization for treatment. Private Pay Questions - (509) If you do not have insurance, a Patient Financial Counselor will discuss financial arrangements and options with you. Free Parking Garage Parking is free, and includes an elevator and stairs. There are 663 parking spaces, with handicapped spaces and 2 car charging stations. Support Groups (509) The Tri-Cities Cancer Center offers a number of Support Groups at its facility or can direct you to others within the community. Your Patient Care Partner At Kadlec, we encourage you to designate a Care Partner someone chosen by you to walk beside you through your care. Studies have shown that patients who have family/friends who are actively involved in their care have better outcomes. Our process allows you to choose a friend or family member to be a Care Partner. Care Partners do not replace clinical care, but provide another set of eyes, ears and voice to ensure the patient s needs (your needs) are being met. As a part of the health care team, your Care Partner can make a valuable contribution. 18
