These include an elite, national standard multi-use sports hall, climbing wall, all-weather 3G pitch, Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) and an indoor bounding track with warm-up area. The teaching facilities include five new teaching rooms, complete with interactive Whiteboards. The students can also utilise a new, fully equipped Electronic Learning Centre and a comfortable student common room. Having strong partnerships with both Ospreys Regional Rugby and Swansea City Football Club only outlines our serious commitment to develop our professionalism in the sporting world! We link with many outside agencies and governing bodies, providing our students with exciting opportunities and experiences as well as the opportunity to train alongside professional athletes. 5 Length of Course Two years Mode of Attendance AS & A2: Full-time Entry Requirements AS: Six GCSEs at Grade C or above B grade in GCSE PE (if studied) B grade in GCSE Science C and above English and Maths and high level of competence in at least 2 sports. A2: PE grade D or above. Prospective students are required to attend a practical assessment day and are subject to approval. AS - UNIT G451 Anatomy and Physiology Acquiring Movement Skills Social Cultural Studies UNIT G452 Practical Performance - Two non-conflicting sports. Evaluating and Planning for improvement in performance - one sport A2 - UNIT G453 Historical Studies Sports Psychology Exercise Physiology UNIT G454 Practical Performance - one sport from the first year Evaluation, Appreciation and Improvement of Performance - above sport Method of Assessment AS: One written 2 hr exam paper and practical assessment in two sports. To include evaluating and planning for improvement of performance in one. Students may have the opportunity to study Sports Leaders Award and First Aid as part of the course. A2: One written 2½ hour exam paper and practical assessment in one sport to include evaluating and appreciation and improvement of performance. AS/A2 Level Physical Education Progression AS: A2 Physical Education A2: Along with the other A subjects A2 PE, could lead to a range of university courses at Foundation and Degree level. 8 BTEC Level 3 Extended National Diploma in Sport (Development, Coaching & Fitness) Length of Course Two years Entry Requirements Five GCSEs Grade C or above to include Maths or English (both desirable) or an appropriate Level 2 Diploma at distinction grade. SYLLABUS Students will take 180 credits to include: Principles of Anatomy & Physiology in Sport The Physiology of Fitness Assessing Risk in Sport Fitness Training & Programming Sports Coaching Practical Team Sports Outdoor and Adventurous Activities Others include work experience for Sports Performance, Fitness Testing for Sports & Exercise, Sports Injuries, Sports Nutrition. Additional Qualifications CSLA Levels 2 & 3 CYQ Fitness Instruction Level 2 Governing Body Awards First Aid. Mode of Attendance Full-time Method of Assessment All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded - equivalent of three A Levels e.g MMM = 240 UCAS points / three grade Cs at A level. Progression Students can progress onto Higher Education Degree courses or a Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching and Performance at NPTC. 10 Length of Course One year Entry Requirements A good standard of literacy and numeracy supported by a general education equivalent to four GCSEs at grades D-G but two must be at grade D or above. Other related Level 1 or 2 qualifications. SYLLABUS Students will study sample subjects such as: The Role and Work of the Public Services Sport and Recreation in the Public Services Citizenship, Society and the Public Services Security Procedures in the Public Services Multi-Day Expedition Experience Mode of Attendance Full-time Method of Assessment Two of the subjects are exam-based with the remaining subjects being assessed and graded on coursework for which an overall grade is awarded at Pass, Merit or Distinction. Assessment is a mixture of written and practical assessments, which are often linked to visits and practical activities with many of the Public Services, such as the Police, Fire Service, Army, Royal Navy and others. Extra Curricular Activities BTEC LEVEL 2 Diploma IN PUBLIC SERVICES As part of the programme of study, students take part in numerous trips, visits and experiences with many of the Public Services. Students have recently worked with South Wales Police Dog Section; they have attended work experience with the Army, Fire Service, the Royal Navy/Royal Marines and the Justice Sector Crown Court in Swansea. Students also take part in regular physical fitness and sports as part of the course and take part in a multi-day outdoor expedition using both local and national locations to enjoy the great outdoors. Students also take part in Public Service Test Weeks which are run by the staff with the support of various Public Services. Recently the students worked with South Wales Police Dog Section and conducted a Drugs Dog training exercise at Cardiff Airport and the RAF carried out a major incidents exercise with the students to give them first-hand experience of the work of the Public Services. Approximate Course Costs College Tracksuit: 90 Walking Boots: 40 Waterproof Jacket & Trousers: 30 Expedition Costs: 75 Expedition costs are paid in stages during term time and this goes towards expedition costs for visits to places such as the Hadrian s Wall Walk or the Lake District. 11 BTEC LEVEL 3 EXTENDED DIPLOMA IN PUBLIC SERVICES AND WELSH BACCALAUREATE Length of Course One year Entry Requirements You will need to have at least one of the following: BTEC First Certificate or Diploma in a related subject merit grade At least five GCSEs at grades A*-C Relevant Level 2 Qualification. SYLLABUS Core Units Government policies and the ups Leadership and teamwork Citizenship, diversity and the ups Understanding discipline in the ups Fitness testing and training for the ups. Specialist Units Responding to emergency incidents Physical preparation, health & lifestyle Outdoor & adventurous activities Understanding war & conflict Outdoor adventurous activities First aid. 13 Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching and Performance This is a new and exciting course aimed at those who wish to further their career prospects and gain qualifications in the sports coaching and performance areas. It is based around CORE modules which are closely related to work-based experience and relevant work qualifications. Length of Course The course is two years full-time. You will be expected to complete between hours work-based activity. Entry Requirements 160 UCAS points. Please note: Mature students over 21 years old with NO formal qualifications but with commitment to sport may also be eligible subject to interview. SYLLABUS Students will be assessed through written assignments, examination electronic assessment and work-based evaluation. MODULES Anatomy and Physiology Measurement and Evaluation Nutrition of Sport Coaching Principles Sports Development Work-based Modules Sport Psychology Physiology of Exercise Biomechanics of Sport. Mode of Attendance Full-time Method of Assessment Variety of assessment methods including examinations, assignments, lab books and individual/group presentations. Both practical and coaching assessment will be continuous throughout the year. Progression The course aims to provide a platform for vocational and academic development in sport, with potential to career progression within coaching or on to further study. At the end of the course the student may wish to leave with a Foundation Degree. There are, however further options that might be considered: Progress to complete a top up year at the University of South Wales, in order to achieve a full degree. 16 SCHOLARSHIPS ON OFFER FOR TOP SPORT STUDENTS Are you an elite sportsperson? If so, you could be in line for one of our sport scholarships. For several years, NPTC Group has awarded scholarships. For new students applying for courses starting in September 2015, this could be up to 1,500 based on sports specific criteria and National Governing Body (NGB) recommendations. As well as financial support, scholarship winners receive guidance and support from the College to nurture their talents. 17 Success Stories Ashley Beck Studied the BTEC L3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Development, Coaching & Fitness) at Llandarcy Academy of Sport. Progressed onto the Foundation Degree, whilst playing rugby with the Regional Ospreys Rugby Squad. Current Member of the Senior team and achieved Senior Welsh International Rugby Honours. Elli Norkett Completed her studies at Llandarcy Academy of Sport, where she achieved her BTEC L3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Development, Coaching & Fitness). Elli was a scholarship student who represented NPTC Group in Netball, Rugby and Athletics; she was awarded the SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR title last year (pictured at the Annual sports awards with Ashley Beck and Justin Tipuric). Elli is now studying a BSc (Hons) in Sport & PE at Cardiff Metropolitan University and is a member of the Senior Welsh Women s 7s Rugby Squad. Justin Tipuric Studied the Foundation Degree, whilst playing rugby with the Regional Ospreys Rugby Squad.
