3 North West Kent College North West Kent College operates an Education and Football Scheme in partnership with Gillingham Football Club. The aim of the scheme is to attract students between the ages of 16 and 18 who are football enthusiasts and want to improve both their academic qualifications and their progression in football. It provides an opportunity to gain a recognised educational qualification, to receive top class football coaching from UEFA A and B Licence Coaches and to play a high standard of competitive football. The association between North West Kent College and Gillingham Football Club enables students to demonstrate their talents to a professional football club and work closely with their players and coaches. The scheme offers the chance for students to fulfil their potential in both the classroom and on the football pitch. They have access to state-of-the-art facilities at North West Kent College, delivered in the new 22 million Osterberg Sports Centre, with the football provision delivered at Hayden Youth, which has both grass and 3G training facilities. North West Kent College offers one of the widest ranges of post-16 learning choices in the area, combining the very best support, teaching and learning activities, in modern purpose built facilities. 3

Entry Requirements Level 1 Course: GCSE Profile/School reference/ Interview. Level 2 Course: Three GCSEs at grade D or above/school reference/ Interview. Level 3 Course: Five GCSEs at grade C or above (Including English & Maths)/school reference/interview. 9 hours of professional football coaching/theory per week from UEFA qualified coaches. Development of football skills Sports nutrition Injury identification and rehabilitation Weight/circuit training Phases and functions of play Tactics and strategies Principles of team and set pieces Anaerobic training and plyometrics inc SAQ Fitness testing and monitoring To be considered for the programme, students must satisfy both academic and football requirements. Students must be enrolled on one of the above academic courses to be eligible for the academy sides. Students on other sports programmes can trial for the college teams. 5

5 Jamie Coyle Academy Whites Team Manager - Lecturer in Sport Jamie Coyle is the Head Coach of the Academy Whites squad. He is currently player/assistant manager of Leatherhead Football Club in the Ryman Premier, and he has previous professional and semi-professional playing experience with Crystal Palace, Dartford FC, Gravesend & Northfleet FC, Sittingbourne FC and Dulwich Hamlet FC. He is the Programme Manager of North West Kent College s Extended Diploma in Sport - Performance and Excellence Programme. Jamie holds a BA in Physical Education and Sport from the University of Greenwich. Jamie is currently a Tutor for the FA running regional coaching courses and also holds the UEFA A Coaching Licence. Richard Brady - Academy Blues Team Manager Lecturer in Sport Richard Brady is the Head Coach of the Academy Blues side. He was a professional footballer with Queens Park Rangers for four years and is currently manager of Leatherhead FC after a semi-professional playing career with Fisher Athletic, Eastbourne Borough, Dulwich Hamlet and Leyton. He is the Programme Manager of North West Kent College s NVQ II Activity Leadership Programme (Football). Richard is currently a Tutor for the FA running regional coaching courses and also holds the UEFA A Coaching Licence. Nathan White Academy Coach Nathan White is a UEFA B Licence coach and FA Level 2 Goalkeeper coach who has semi-professional playing experience with Dartford FC, Lordswood FC and is currently assistant manager of Maidstone FC reserves. He spent 1 year in Qatar coaching football academies before returning to the UK as Sittingbourne FC first team coach. Nathan is currently embarking on his Foundation Degree in Sport Studies at the University of Greenwich. Chris Lewington Academy Goalkeeper Coach Lecturer in Sport Chris is currently a professional footballer for Dagenham and Redbridge FC in League 2, where he is in his first year of a three year professional contract. He is a graduate of the college s academy scheme in 2008 and has also completed a BA Hons Degree in Physical Education and Sport. Since completing his BA Hons Degree, Chris has returned to North West Kent College as a Sports Lecturer and Goalkeeper coach for the academy. 6 YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED WHEN DOES THE SCHEME BEGIN? Pre-season training starts in early August 2013, with the academic programme beginning in September WHAT STANDARD OF FOOTBALL IS AVAILABLE? Teams play in the Football Conference Youth League (Under 19), which is considered to be the best youth league outside of the professional game. CAN STUDENTS PLAY FOR A CLUB SIDE AT WEEKENDS? The scheme is also linked with the KCSSA College League, so if players are coming back from injury or just need match practice there is a provision to play for one of our successful college academy teams. With both provisions, players will be provided more opportunities to play competitive games and be monitored by our own coaching staff. If however, players still want to play Sunday football then that is fine. WHAT WILL STUDENTS BE ABLE TO DO AT THE END OF THE TWO YEARS? There are many options open to graduates of the scheme Professional Contract, Higher Education, Football Coaching, Fitness Trainer, Scholarship in United States, P.E. Teacher or a career in the Leisure industry are all real examples of the progression of past graduates. WILL GOALKEEPING STUDENTS RECEIVE SPECIALIST COACHING? A specialist goalkeeping coach delivers weekly training sessions on a Friday afternoon. WHEN WILL FOOTBALL TRIALS TAKE PLACE? The trials for 2013/2014 will take place at Hayden Youth between March June CAN STUDENTS STAY ON AT SIXTH FORM AND DO THE FOOTBALL TRAINING? No, the Education and Football Scheme is only open to learners enrolled on a sports academic programme at North West Kent College. WHAT HAPPENS IF A STUDENT REJECTS THE ACADEMIC PART OF THE COURSE? Quite simply, the student is unable to participate in the scheme. HOW DO STUDENTS APPLY FOR A COLLEGE PLACE?
