1 NovaNET Advance Overview Introduction NovaNET Courseware is a complete web-based system that delivers proven, rigorous, standards-based instruction for high school and adult learners. With individualized instruction, a complete learning management system and core curriculum aligned to state and national standards, NovaNET Courseware can be utilized for any number of education applications including credit accrual, dropout prevention, summer school, credit recovery, virtual schools, virtual learning and more. NovaNET Advance courses are designed to be highly engaging with media-rich content to allow teachers to deliver Advanced Placement online instruction in either a remote or blended learning environment. All of the Pearson NovaNET Advance courses are aligned to either the national and state standards (core course) or the curriculum requirements identified by the College Board that are associated with the corresponding Advanced Placement* exam. This guide is intended for teachers and administrators as an accompaniment for on-site or remote initial training. It is also intended for reference after training. 1

Course Types Each student can have a unique path and personalized instruction in the areas where he needs it most. To support a wide range of students, there are three distinct course types: Prescriptive, Sequential, and Open. Each course consists of modules or lessons called study plans. The route a student takes while moving through the course and study plans is determined by the type of course he is assigned. The three types of courses in NovaNET Courseware are described below: Table 1-1. Course Types COURSE TYPE PRESCRIPTIVE SEQUENTIAL OPEN DESCRIPTION THE PRESCRIPTIVE COURSE TYPE ADAPTS THE COURSE CONTENT BASED UPON STUDENT PERFORMANCE TO PROVIDE INDIVIDUALIZED INSTRUCTION. USING DIAGNOSTIC LOGIC, A SUBSEQUENT STUDY PLAN IS ASSIGNED BASED ON CONTENT STUDENTS HAVE NOT MASTERED AT THE OBJECTIVE LEVEL IN THEIR CURRENT STUDY PLAN. STUDENTS BEGIN WITH A PRE-TEST WHICH ASSESSES KNOWLEDGE OF PARTICULAR OBJECTIVES. LESSONS ARE ASSIGNED BASED ON OBJECTIVES NOT MASTERED IN THE PRE-TEST. EACH STUDY PLAN ENDS WITH A POST-TEST TO PROVE OBJECTIVE MASTERY BEFORE ALLOWING STUDENTS TO MOVE ON TO THE NEXT STUDY PLAN IN THE COURSE. SEQUENTIAL COURSES OFFER THE LESSONS IN A STRUCTURED FORMAT WITH A PREDETERMINED, EXACT SEQUENCE. STUDY PLANS DO NOT HAVE PRE-TEST SO STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE ALL LESSONS IN ORDER. EACH STUDY PLAN ENDS WITH A POST-TEST TO PROVE OBJECTIVE MASTERY BEFORE ALLOWING STUDENTS TO MOVE ON TO THE NEXT STUDY PLAN IN THE COURSE. IN AN OPEN COURSE, STUDENTS CAN NAVIGATE THROUGHOUT THE LESSONS IN ANY ORDER THEY WISH. THERE ARE NO PRE-TESTS, HOWEVER, EACH STUDY PLAN ENDS WITH A POST-TEST. RECOMMENDED USAGE CREDIT RECOVERY COURSE REMEDIATION SPECIAL NEEDS CREDIT ACCRUAL FIRST-TIME CREDIT REMEDIATION TUTORIAL In all course types, the Teacher has the option to override lessons, mark them as complete and view a student s progress at anytime, including viewing the student s last attempt and submissions. The course name identifies the subject and type, for example Algebra IA (Prescriptive). 2

NOTE: THE REMAINDER OF THE SYLLABUS IS PRE-LOADED FOR YOU. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION OR OFFLINE ASSIGNMENTS, DO SO AT THIS TIME. BE SURE TO REVIEW THE SYLLABUS IN ITS ENTIRETY. THIS IS YOUR COURSE SYLLABUS AND IS PART OF THE CERTIFICATION PROCESS OF AP COURSES. Course Structure On the Course Content tab, below the syllabus, you will see six icons; Getting Started, Syllabus, Virtual World, ebook, Modules, Teacher Resource (hidden to students) and Student Resource. Figure 2-7. Additional Icons The majority of the students work in a course takes place in the Virtual World. This is where lesson presentations, practices, and activities reside. While working in the Virtual World, students are prompted to access the course ebook where they complete reading assignments. Additionally, students interact with the course instructor by completing the course modules. When a module (folder icon) is opened, two types of activities appear. The paper and pencil icon represents an upload activity. This is where students upload completed assignments from the Virtual World. An icon depicted as paper with a green checkmark represents a quiz. Figure 2-8. Icons for an Open Module 8

3 Virtual World Directions for Using Activities in the Virtual World 1. While working in the Virtual World, students download and save the assignment instructions. 2. The student then completes the assignment according to the instructions. 3. Once the assignment is complete, the student exits the Virtual World and opens the corresponding module (folder icon). 4. The student then opens the corresponding upload activity (paper and pencil icon) and navigates to the saved instructions and completed assignment files. 5. The student uploads both files and submits for grading. NOTE: THESE ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE GRADED BY THE COURSE INSTRUCTOR. NOVANET DOES NOT SCORE THESE ASSIGNMENTS. When a student launches a quiz, they follow the prompts to complete the quiz and then submit it for grading. Navigation in the Virtual World The following sections describe the different aspects of the Virtual World: Accessing NovaNET Advance Assignments Students who are assigned NovaNET Advance courses begin by logging in to NovaNET Courseware. All NovaNET Advance courses begin in the Virtual World. When entering the Virtual World, the student is prompted to re-enter their username and password. There are two options for creating logins and passwords for the Virtual World. 1. Teachers launch the Virtual World and create a registration for the students. 2. Teachers allow students to create their own username and password Both of these options require an access code. The code was ed to the main contact from Pearson. 9

Figure 3-1 Login to Virtual World NOTE: PEARSON DIGITAL LEARNING RECOMMENDS THAT INSTRUCTORS COMPLETE THE REGISTRATION INFORMATION IN THE VIRTUAL WORLD FOR THE STUDENT PRIOR TO THE STUDENT ACCESSING IT. INSTRUCTORS HAVE THE OPTION OF ALLOWING STUDENTS TO CREATE THEIR OWN USERNAME AND PASSWORD. Avatar Selection When students enter the Virtual World, they select one avatar from several available. The avatar name will be Psi. Figure 3-2. Avatar Selection 10

Introduction to the Story Concept Each NovaNET Advance course has a unique story concept with a goal for students to accomplish as they complete each learning module. Students begin the course by completing the course introduction where they receive the goals for the course. World Map Following the introduction, students arrive at a world map representing the areas of the Virtual World they will explore during the course. The learning modules on the map are represented by two icons: Table 3-1. World Map Icons ICON DESCRIPTION GOLD STARS ON A BLUE CIRCLE REPRESENT UNLOCKED MODULES THAT ARE IN PROGRESS OR ARE COMPLETED. GOLD STARS ON A RED CIRCLE REPRESENT LOCKED MODULES. THESE MODULES WILL BE UNLOCKED ONCE THE PREVIOUS MODULE IS COMPLETED. WHILE WORKING IN A MODULE, STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO RETURN TO THE WORLD MAP BY CLICKING ON THE MAP ICON AT THE TOP OF THE SCREEN. Table of Contents The table of contents for the course is on the same page as the world map. The contents include the modules and the lessons in the course. A student may use the table of contents to access any module or lesson that was previously completed. Navigational Control The arrow keys on the keyboard are used to move the avatar in the Virtual World. 11

Objects There are eight types of objects used in the Virtual World: 12

Other objects in the Virtual World Console The course console is located at the top of the screen allowing convenient access to previously completed lesson presentations, practices and activities as well as other course information. Module Progress Bar A progress bar is also located at the top of screen. This bar provides students with a visual indicator of their progress during a given module. It also includes the number of presentations, practices, and activities they have completed. Tutorial A tutorial and demo are available through the help button at the top of the screen. Grading Student Assignments 1. At the Teacher Home screen, locate the course. 2. Click Gradebook to the right of the course name. On the next screen, the course modules will be listed on the left side of the screen. 3. Select the module you want to grade. ALL OTHER ASSIGNMENTS WILL NEED TO BE GRADED BY THE INSTRUCTOR. 4. Click the drop-down arrow to the right of a module objective and choose View All Submissions. On the next screen, student names will be listed on the left. Those with a plus sign (+) at the left of their name have submitted assignments for grading. 5. Click the plus sign (+) next to a student name. 6. Click on an assignment that has a grade pending. A link to the activity instructions and the student s completed assignment will appear to the right. 7. You can now do the following: a.
