3 What you ll study: In addition to studying on the Football Development Centre s main programme you will also have the option to complete an FA Level 1, First Aid course, Sports Leaders Award and a Referees Training course, as well as gain valuable work experience. There will also be the opportunity to join your squad and take part in a tour abroad. Depending on your qualifications you will be able to choose to study with the Football Development Centre gaining a Sport (Performance and Excellence) BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma, BTEC Level 2 (depending on qualifications) or three a-levels. List of achievements: You ll be in good company at the Sunderland College Football Development Centre our students have gone on to play for England U18s, won scholarships to play for American Universities and our teams have a huge list of cups and achievements under their belts. 4 Football Development Centre Staff Michele Di Mascio Curriculum Leader (Sport) Michele has worked at Sunderland College in a teaching role since 2009 and is now Curriculum Leader for Sport, which includes running the Development Centre s. In the past Michele has written articles for the European Journal of Applied Physiology, Journal of Sports Science and the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research and has presented at various conferences, including at the Danish FA. As well as managing the college s sport department, he is currently undertaking a PhD in developing football-specific training and testing methods. Michele has fantastic links within the sporting industry and works with a number of professional and amateur football teams in the UK. David Rush UEFA B Head Coach David has spent over 14 years playing football at the highest level including playing in the Premier League, playing in the 1992 FA Cup Final and two promotions with Sunderland AFC and Oxford United FC. Since retiring from playing, David has been a Professional Coach, Assistant Manager and Manager of Gateshead FC. Anth Smith UEFA B Coach Previously Anth played for Sunderland Football Club s first team and also represented England at U19 level. He has been coaching football for over seventeen years and in that time has worked for SAFC s Academy of Light, Gateshead FC as their Youth Team Manager, Reserve Team Coach and was eventually promoted to Manager before joining Sunderland College as a coach. Gus Di Lella UEFA A Coach Gus has over 12 years of experience playing at professional level in five different countries. He s a UEFA A licenced coach and has over five years worth of experience working in football academies. George Spurs Goal Keeper Coach George has worked as a Goal Keeper Coach for many years and is respected across the region. Currently George is a Level 2 coach and is working towards gaining his UEFA B qualification. As well as our Coaches you ll be working with our top class lecturers and fully qualified physiotherapists. Graham Mytton Head of Sport and Tourism As the Head of Sport & Tourism, Graham s job is to make sure that Sunderland College s Football Development Centre is given the resources it needs to flourish. He has been teaching in sport and exercise since 2004 and is currently undertaking a PhD analysing elite sport performers. As well as publishing his research in peer reviewed journals, he acts as a reviewer for the International Journal of Performance Analysis in Sport and the European Journal of Sport Science. Previously he worked as a personal trainer and strength and conditioning coach for individuals and teams in the region including Team Northumbria Netball, elite distance runners and even a canoe polo international! 6 7

5 Callum Mordey Callum studied with the Football Development Centre completing a BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science between 2010 and 2012 before gaining a scholarship to play football in the United States of America. Juggling studying his degree in Psychology and playing football for Georgia Gwinnett University, Callum is now well on his way to playing professionally in America. We caught up with him during the break in season I d do it all over again if I could claims Callum, the best bit about the Football Development Centre is coming into college everyday and doing something you love with all your friends. The highlight of my career so far was when I got my first contract with SAFC as I m a big Sunderland fan. You ve got to have drive and determination though. You ve got to push yourself to get the best out of college. I m hoping to get offered a contract to play football professionally in America but thanks to my education, if I don t I would like to be a sports psychologist. 8 9

6 Footballing and Academic Education It s not just your footballing education that we care about at Sunderland College but your academic education too. We have a great reputation for our teaching and learning and our students have exceeded the national average for success rates and high grades for the last three years! You can choose from a range of courses as a Football Development Centre student to make sure it fits with your career aims. Our level 2 diploma in Sport is a great entry level course which if you successfully complete you can use to access our level 3 courses. Our level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport Performance and Excellence will give you knowledge, training and experience of 18 subject areas within sport. Even better we will relate as much as we can to your footballing education too! This course will allow you to access university courses if you that is your aim. Our a-level choice is the biggest in Sunderland you can choose from 36 different subjects all on one site! Our timetables ensure that your lessons won t clash with football training or matches

7 Sam Robinson I really enjoyed the combination of football training and BTEC lessons I got as part of the football development centre at Sunderland College. The coaches and teachers set us really high standards which is why I was so happy to get the highest grade possible on my course at the same time as becoming a better player on the pitch Sam Robinson studied at Sunderland College for two years as a member of the Football Development Centre on the Sport (Performance and Excellence) course. He completed the course with a D*D*D* grade, the maximum grade possible. Sam was fully committed with both his education and football and was instrumental in the college s footballing success. He was a highly motivated student that used the expertise of the staff, and is now enjoying life as a Higher Education student studying a Foundation Degree in Exercise, Health and Fitness
