Sports Academy Academic achievement & sporting excellence

02 Introduction Our Sports Academy offers a unique opportunity for students to receive high-level coaching and competition experience alongside their academic study. Students have seven different Sports Academies to choose from; Basketball, Cricket, Football, Golf, Hockey, Netball and Rugby. The Sports Academy is a tremendous platform for any student wishing to develop their technical and tactical skills which will ultimately improve overall performance and success in their chosen sport. Academy students receive specialist training twice a week on a Monday afternoon and Friday morning as well as playing in regular fixtures, competing on Wednesday afternoons in county, regional and national competitions. Academic subject choices are timetabled around training and fixtures to provide a well-rounded sports and study experience at College, with no disruption to lessons or learning. The Sports Centre at Brock offers excellent facilities for Academy training and matches. These include three football pitches and training grids, two rugby pitches, a floodlit, all-weather hockey pitch and 5-a-side training area, a floodlit hard court area with four tennis courts, three netball courts and a basketball court, a sports hall with full sized basketball, netball and volleyball courts and four badminton courts. There is also a fully equipped gym and fitness studio available for Academy students to further develop their fitness training. Details on how to apply can be found on page 18.

05 Basketball The College currently hosts two teams (the Bulldogs ) that play in the Hampshire first and second leagues, as well as competing in the County and British Colleges Cups. The Bulldogs have an excellent record of success; last year the first team reached the divisional semi-finals and the second team took top place in their league, and in 2014 they won the British Colleges South East 1 League. The team s continued success comes from constant practice sessions and matchplay which takes up eight hours per week. The regular training sessions are devised to develop specific basketball skills and general fitness. Other pre-class sessions are also on offer for those who are dedicated to reaching their highest potential. The schedule of the training sessions and games fits in well with my academic timetable and enables me to complete work and achieve my desired grades. Benjy Kirkham. The College has a strong link with the Solent University Sports Performance Science department which assesses players fitness and identifies development needs a really useful aspect of the course for those aspiring to play at the highest level. Brock also has a link with the CBA Basketball Academy in Gran Canaria. Through a week long intensive training camp in the summer term, it gives the Academy players a chance to be trained by Spanish and American coaches and be pushed to their limits, experiencing what it takes to play at a high level. Brock s basketball coaches include men and women who have played at professional level, nationally and internationally; they hold relevant coaching awards and are an enthusiastic team who are dedicated to the game and to ensuring that our students get the most out of their studies and their basketball game. An ex-captain of Brock s Basketball Academy is now part of Gloucester University s BUSA programme, and another member of our team was invited to join the Impact Basketball Academy in Las Vegas. For more information about Basketball and what the Sports Academy has to offer, visit:

06 Cricket Brock s Cricket teams play and train on a regular basis through term times. Training takes place at our own indoor facilities and at the Dorset Cricket Centre (an ECB accredited centre of cricket development). The sessions include team training and one-to-one technical and tactical sessions that develop batting, bowling and fielding skills. There is also a strong emphasis on fitness to benefit players overall performance, as well as the development of mental toughness for competition play. All coaches involved with the running of the Academy are extremely passionate about the game and the development of players. Regular fixtures take place at nearby Bashley (Rydal) Cricket Club to ensure match experience; the teams also participate in a regional trophy (with over 50 teams) and a number of 20/20 competitions. The Cricket Academy has seen success in a number of students, including one who has trialled for Gloucester County Cricket Club and was invited to participate in the England Talent test at Loughborough University, attended by England Development Programme Directors. During sessions we have the opportunity to see a psychologist who talks to us both one-to-one and in groups about different techniques, which is great as it helps us prepare and build up to a real game. Matt Swindlehurst. We are also proud to be linked with LCA Cricket Coaching (based at the Ageas Bowl). They provide the players with additional coaching experience throughout the year. The players who participate receive quality, first-class coaching from ex-professional cricketers, LCA founders and coaches Richard Logan and Richard Browning. 9 09 Football The Football Academy has four men s teams and one women s team which have gained a significant local and national reputation; it is regarded as one of the top FE-based Football Academies in the county. Brock offers a two to three year specialist programme to enable students to develop and perfect their footballing skills. The Football Academy coaches are all UEFA qualified and have extensive experience of working with youth players, as well as personal success as players themselves. They are dedicated to the sport and to developing the highest standard of achievement for all students. The structured training schedule allows eight hours coaching each week, together with competitive matches. The men s Academy has longstanding links with AFC Bournemouth, which provides some of the Academy players the opportunity to train with the club s Youth Team. The Academy also has a unique partnership with Southern League side Bashley Football Club, which identifies and nurtures individual skills and aims to prepare year olds for semi-professional football. Former Premier League football player Graeme Le Saux visited the College to speak to Football Academy students about opportunities for careers in football. The Academy boasts an outstanding number of achievements to date, including winning the British Colleges National Cup in 2013, and being awarded the President s Trophy for Outstanding Team Performance at the 2013 Hampshire PE and Schools Sports Celebration. They also compete in the Youth Alliance Football Conference, and have qualified to represent the South East region at the 2014 British Colleges National Championships. The women s team were the 2013 runners up in the Hampshire Colleges League, and played in the British Colleges Sports Cup regional final in Past Academy students have represented England Colleges, and also gone on to sign professional contracts with Hull City, AFC Bournemouth, Dagenham and Redbridge FC, and Port Vale FC. Many women s team players have also gone on to trial for the England Colleges National team. I have had a fantastic two years learning from some excellent coaches, which has helped me improve massively as a player. This has been an experience to remember forever and I could not wish for a better atmosphere and environment in which to play football. Tony Rolls. 10 10 Golf The College runs a two year programme designed to ensure that golf students can achieve their maximum potential. This new course has already established an excellent reputation and Brock were the National Intercollegiate Champions in 2011; some of our students have also received golf scholarships to American universities. The programme, for male and female players, develops a range of technical, tactical and other skills, together with physical preparation. Regular training and support activities include group and individual coaching sessions, fitness analysis, physical training, psychological skills development, dietary analysis and nutritional advice. Students also maintain lesson records and playing statistics in order to analyse and improve their performance. All students become members at Brockenhurst Manor Golf Club where they have full access to the course and practice facilities. Students receive coaching from Hampshire PGA professional, Kevin Saunders; this covers all aspects of the game including chipping, pitching, bunker play and putting, as well as course management. Weekly order of merit rounds are played and teams are selected to play in two national competitions, the British Schools and Colleges Tour and the Intercollegiate Tour, where students compete against other golf academies at a regional level and, if successful, in national finals. Winter training is arranged each year and students spend a week at the superb two-course Atalya Park Golf Resort in Southern Spain, receiving daily practice and matchplay experience. The course has seen a high level of success; one of our students was the England Ladies Amateur Champion in 2010 and the England Girls Champion and Daily Telegraph Junior Champion in 2011; she is now on a scholarship at Baylor College in Texas, USA. Another student is the current Hampshire Boy s and Men s Champion. In addition to preparing for potential careers as professional golfers, the Academy training can also act as a first step into a range of careers including golf club professionals, coaches, referees, caddies or personal trainers. Please note that additional fees apply for the Golf Academy. For specific information about the Golf Academy, please contact Richard Macro at rmacro@brock.ac.uk For more information about Golf and what the Sports Academy has to offer, visit:

13 Hockey The Hockey Academy runs a Talent Development Programme based upon the England Hockey Long Term Athlete Development Programme. All training is focussed on developing core skills, movement, small unit play, game play, set plays and tactics. Training sessions take place twice a week on a Monday and a Friday and utilise the full size and 5-a-side floodlit artificial turf pitches. The mixed training sessions include technical and tactical coaching, as well as specific fitness training to prepare the squad for the Wednesday afternoon competitive fixtures. Each year we field a men s, women s and a mixed team. These teams compete in the Hampshire Hockey Association, Hampshire Colleges and British Colleges Leagues as well as numerous cups and tournaments each season. We also have a range of friendly fixtures against local private schools and universities. The Hockey Academy boasts a number of students who have been selected to represent the British Colleges National Squad, County and Regional development teams. We have close links with our local clubs and our players have competed for Romsey, Trojans, Bournemouth, Wimborne, Salisbury, Southampton and New Milton Hockey Clubs. The Academy coaches have a wealth of professional hockey knowledge and are active within the county and region. The coaches are Level 2 qualified and are enthusiastic and dedicated with a real desire to ensure students receive the highest level of training and experience to achieve their potential. The Academy gives me the opportunity to train whenever I want, and access to the Astro is great for extra practice. Spending time with like-minded people is fantastic, as it gives me a short break from academic work. Hannah Leigh. The Academy has excellent community and school links and each year organises and runs various hockey festivals and tournaments for the local area. Students have numerous opportunities to participate in coaching and officiating roles within these sessions, allowing them to develop additional sports management and interpersonal skills. They have an excellent record of success in competitions they have been U19 Champions of Hampshire Schools, Hampshire League Champions, and finalists in England Colleges League and U19 National Schools. Our staff team holds relevant UKCC qualifications, together with umpiring and first aid qualifications. They are experienced players and coaches with a real commitment to the sport and in developing future talent. Many of our students have achieved personal success three of our players were recently selected to represent Hampshire in the upcoming British Colleges Trials, and could soon be representing the country in netball. The Academy also gives students the opportunity to organise tournaments, participate in various events, gain coaching experience, and learn useful skills for their future playing and career plans - the Youth Umpire Award is taught to all Academy students and they have the opportunity to gain their umpiring qualification. Some students have chosen to gain volunteer experience at the annual World Netball Series, others have worked at local schools, developing coaching and umpiring expertise. The opportunities within the Netball Academy have been vast and unforgettable; in 2012 we were selected to be Young Games Makers at the London Olympics, in 2013 we travelled to Malta to play against their teams and take part in coaching sessions, and more recently we went to Surrey for a day of coaching with an England player and Super League Coach.
