The aims of the Post Graduate Diploma are: to produce graduates with an increased capacity for understanding theoretical concepts and contemporary issues of various aspects of renewable energy and energy management. to produce graduates who have an in depth knowledge and understanding of the scientific, technological, and socio-economic principles and techniques upon which renewable energy technologies and energy management strategies are founded. 2 to produce graduates with an extended capability to apply knowledge and skills in identifying, developing, analysing and critically appraising solutions to a range of renewable energy problems and energy management strategies. to enable graduates to apply the skills and knowledge acquired in the course in a mature professional manner at the forefront of Renewable Energy and Energy Management. The additional aims of the MSc are: to produce graduates who have a comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable to their own research, combined with the management of an independent investigation in an area related to energy technology. to exhibit originality in the application of knowledge, together with a practical understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in Renewable Energy and Energy Management. to develop graduates with the capability to pursue a career in research and development through independence, self motivation and initiative in research 11 MAIN LEARNING OUTCOMES The programme provides opportunities for students to achieve and demonstrate the following learning. (D) denotes Diploma level 11K K1 K2 K3 K4 K5 KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF SUBJECT Successful students will be able to: distinguish between current energy technologies based upon both renewable and non-renewable resources and understand how the resources can be managed with a view to future sustainability recognise the finite nature of fossil fuel resources, the technology involved in the use of fossil fuel resources and the effects these have on the environment explain how specialised knowledge of renewable energy technologies and the cleaner use of fossil fuels with existing methods of electricity generation can be integrated into existing energy facilities critically examine the inter-relationship between the key scientific processes relevant to energy conversion technologies to successfully reduce process and building energy needs. (D) critically evaluate the complex aspects of scientific investigation, analysis and the reporting of results. (M) B2

3 Teaching and Learning Methods: Subject related qualities are acquired mainly through on-line lectures, seminars, directed reading, on-line MPEGs, Backboard (WebCT) -based resources, case studies and project work. Assessment Methods: Testing of the knowledge base is principally through, coursework assignments, on-line self-assessment and evaluation tools, and project dissertation. 11I I1 I2 I3 I4 I5 INTELLECTUAL QUALITIES Successful students will be able to: critically analyze and compare conventional and emerging renewable energy technologies with cleaner methods of conventional fossil fuel power generation systems relate how renewable energy technologies and energy management strategies can be combined with cleaner methods of conventional fossil fuel power generation and integrated into existing systems to create a more holistic energy supply solution. critically evaluate current and emerging renewable energy technologies and explain how these resources may be managed with a view to future sustainability justify and defend the importance and cost-benefits of energy efficiency strategies to minimise the auxiliary energy load prior to specifying renewable energy technologies. (D) interpret and evaluate data and information from a variety of sources related to renewable energy technologies and energy management strategies to contribute to the development and introduction of new and novel technologies and solutions. (D) select, and apply appropriate research methodologies to an independent Investigation. Display mastery in the undertaking and reporting of research. (M) Teaching and Learning Methods: Intellectual qualities are developed mainly through on-line discussion groups and design projects. Assessment Methods: Assessment is focussed on coursework assignments, laboratory and design project reports, on-line self-assessment and evaluation tools, and research dissertation. B3

8 12 PROGRAMME STRUCTURE AND REQUIREMENTS FOR THE AWARD The programme is a linked programme of awards leading to either a Post Graduate Diploma or MSc Renewable Energy. The Post Graduate Certificate may be achieved as an exit award following completion of the four modules indicated. The programme is offered in parttime mode and conforms to the University s modular requirements. An accumulation of 120 and180 credit points are necessary to complete the PG Diploma and MSc programmes respectively. Progression, transfer and award criteria are outlined in Section 16. 9 14 CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION TO THE PROGRAMME Applicants must hold a degree or equivalent or demonstrate their ability to undertake the course through the accreditation of prior experiential learning. Specific requirements for admission are detailed below: an honours degree in Engineering or Applied Physics discipline from a recognised institution or, a degree or better in a science or engineering discipline from a recognised institution and have been in related professional employment for an least one year. an equivalent standard in a Postgraduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Graduate Certificate or a professional or other qualification recognised by the Senate for this purpose. Or In exceptional circumstances, where an individual has substantial and significant experiential learning, a portfolio of written evidence demonstrating the meeting of graduate qualities (including subject specific outcomes, specified by Course Committee) may be considered as an alternative entrance route. Evidence used to demonstrate graduate qualities may not be used for exemption against modules within the programme. 15 EVALUATING AND IMPROVING THE QUALITY AND STANDARD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING The following mechanisms are used to maintain, evaluate and improve the quality of teaching and learning: Mechanisms for review and evaluation of teaching, learning, assessment, the curriculum and outcome standards: Upon completion the module team reviews each module. Statistical information, student feedback, content, delivery, assessment methods, resources and proposed enhancements are considered. Annual Subject Monitoring (Programme Management), including the views of the External Examiner and module monitoring. Staff teaching performance is monitored annually through student questionnaires. In addition, staff members participate in peer observation of their teaching. Staff appraisal is carried out on a 2 year cycle with attention given to the development needs of the individual staff member. Committees with responsibilities for monitoring and evaluating quality: Teleconference method is suggested by course committee members to regular hold staffstudent consultative meetings which provide the means of highlighting any difficulties, relating to the programme. 10 At school, faculty and University levels there are active Teaching and Learning. Committees responsible for co-ordinating and monitoring developments and initiatives relating to innovative methods for delivery, technology mediated learning, as well as general resource issues. Mechanisms for gaining student feedback on the quality of their learning experience: Student-Staff Consultative Committee, including module evaluation Students are given opportunity to be represented at course committee, School and Faculty board Staff development includes; Updating in the subject through research and scholarly activities The University has an active Staff Development Unit providing specific training/development for staff. Specifically, all new staff members (opportunity is also provided for existing staff) have to pursue a formal teaching qualification (Postgraduate Certificate) and are encouraged to apply to become fellows of the HEA. Consultancy. 16 REGULATION OF STANDARDS Assessment rules. Exit Award: (PG Certificate) Candidates who have successfully completed four prescribed taught modules (pass mark is 50%). The Board of Examiners may recommend a Pass with Distinction to a candidate who achieves an overall mark of at least 70%. Award of PG Diploma: Candidates who have successfully completed eight taught modules (pass mark is 50%). The Board of Examiners may recommend a Pass with Distinction to a candidate who achieves an overall mark of at least 70%. Transfer to the MSc Programme Candidates who achieve an average mark of 50% on both examination and coursework for each of the 8 modules will be eligible to transfer onto the Masters degree Programme. Award of MSc: External Examiners: Candidates who have successfully completed eight taught modules and the dissertation module (pass mark is 50%). The Board of Examiners may recommend the award of MSc with Distinction to a candidate who achieves an overall mark of at least 70% and dissertation must be passed at least 70%. One External Examiner is appointed for the programme, to moderate the assessment process, ensure appropriate standards of final awards and ensure that accuracy and consistency of assessment have been applied. Detailed duties are as specified in the current University of Ulster handbook for External Examiners (consistent with HESA standards). B10

11 17 INDICATORS OF QUALITY RELATING TO TEACHING AND LEARNING The subject which included Renewable Energy (i.e. Building) achieved a 21 point grading in the 1998 HEFCE/QAA Assessment of Quality exercise. Teaching staff are encouraged to become accredited members of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). To date the majority of staff have fulfilled the requirements through completion of the PG Certificate in University Teaching (PGCUT) or the (PGCHEP). The Built Environment Research Institute obtained 15% of activities classified as four star (world leading research) which the majority of teaching staff on the course are members in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. A significant number of staff hold full membership of appropriate professional bodies such as CIBSE and the Energy Institute. Graduates from the course have had excellent employment histories and are employed in energy consultancies and research institutes.
