1 Prtfli Infrmatin The Prtfli: An Overview JC s Department f Language, Literature and Arts has implemented the prtfli as an assessment tl fr all ENG 090, 131, and 132 curses. Please read the fllwing infrmatin abut the prtfli: Every writing student at JCC must submit a prtfli, cnsisting f a variety f revised papers cmpleted this semester that best demnstrate cmpetency in skills and strategies apprpriate t the curse in which yu are enrlled. The prtfli is wrth 35% f yur ttal curse grade. See yur curse syllabus fr grading infrmatin. Yur instructr will evaluate yur prtfli and ffer cmments n the strengths and weaknesses f yur wrk. Successful prtflis cntain papers that have undergne serius revisin. This prtfli is the culminatin f yur semester s wrk and shuld shw evidence f careful revisin and editing. Yur prtfli will be evaluated hlistically; yur instructr will give feedback n yur verall wrk. See the back f this sheet fr departmental descriptins f gd writing. The Prtfli Cntains Plished essays written ver the curse f the semester. A ne page reflectin n yur grwth as a writer in this class. This is a separate essay, ne page minimum reflecting n yu as a writer: what yu have experienced and learned as a writer in this class. Claims shuld be supprted by evidence frm yur writing prcess, essays, and curse materials. See the reflective essay instructins at the end f this dcument Prtfli Requirements Yur cmpsitin prtfli demnstrates yur grwth ver the perid f the class. The prtfli cnsists f twelve pages f yur best academic writing, cmpleted in this class and the reflective letter. This prtfli fcuses n skills such as critical thinking, stylistic cmpetency in the assigned mdes, understanding f the rhetrical situatin, and mechanical cmpetency. Fr ENG 090 and 131 adhere t a 10 page minimum; fr English 132, adhere t a 12 page minimum. These minimums d nt include the prtfli reflective essay, title pages, r wrks cited pages. All essays in the prtfli must be a minimum f three full pages, nt including title and wrks cited pages. Research-based essays must be at least five full pages.

2 Yu must include the research prject: Rhetrical Analysis Essay; Argument Essay. Yu may include either r bth f the Reflective and/r Evaluative essays. This decisin is yurs and based n what yu want yur reader t see in terms f yur prficiency and grwth as a writer. The decisin may als be determined by minimum page requirements. Curse Minimum Number f Pages Accepted Genres Reflective Letter ENG page minimum Narrative, Descriptive, Infrmative. Optinal: Analytical, Persuasive ENG page minimum Memir, Prfile, Reprt. Optin: Analytical, Persuasive ENG page minimum Analytical, Argumentatin. Optinal: Reflective, Reprt, Prpsal, Evaluatin A research paper f at least 5 pages is required in English 132. Frmatting f the Prtfli Include a cver sheet fr the entire prtfli listing yur name, curse and sectin number, and instructr s name. Place yur prtfli reflective essay after the cver page (see frmatting fr the reflective essay at the end f this dcument). Essay frmatting: duble-space, 12 pint fnt, with ne inch margins n all sides. MLA frmatting fr essays: Name and page number in the upper right hand crner f each page. Use the header functin in Micrsft Wrd t accmplish this. When yu use surce materials, fllw MLA Guidelines fr dcumentatin and citatin. Specifically, include parenthetical citatin and a Wrks Cited page when surces are used t supprt yur writing. Althugh MLA des nt require title pages, yu must include a title page fr each essay in the prtfli. List the title f the essay and a brief descriptin f yur purpse r reasns fr writing and the audience r intended readers yu imagine fr it.

Frmatting f the Reflective Essay 1 page n mre, n less (at least 300 wrds). Single spaced 1 inch margins Twelve Pint Fnt: Times, Arial, Calibri, Verdana This is yur pprtunity t frame the quality f the different experiences and papers in yur prtfli and explain hw they add up t a single, cmprehensive picture f yur perfrmance as a writer.

4 In yur essay, yu will reflect n yur grwth as a writer in this class. Use the strategies fr writing a reflective essay that we studied in Unit 2. Address the fllwing areas in yur essay: Intrductin: This shuld set the cntext fr the essay: include the curse number (132) and a brief summary f yur cmmunity, and the papers yu wrte in relatin t that cmmunity. Yur intrductin will need a thesis that makes a claim abut yur grwth as a writer in terms f writing prcess, rhetrical situatin (audience and purpse), genres, research strategies, and cllabratin with peers. Bdy: The subjects f yur papers and why yu chse them. Identify and explain any psitive changes r develpments yu have nticed in yur writing prcesses ver the curse f the semester. A gd way t explain this is t reflect n hw engaging prcess impacted yur final papers. Pay attentin t hw yu revise by cmparing the riginal, early drafts f yur essays t the final drafts fr yur Prtfli. Briefly explain where ne wuld see evidence f the psitive changes in the Prtfli Writings. Be specific. Explain hw any f the writing and hmewrk assignments, textbk, and in-class individual and grup activities cntributed t these psitive changes. Identify what has nt changed r develped in yur writing ver the curse f the semester, and be sure t explain what r wh yu think might be respnsible fr yur grwth.
