Swimming Lesson Information

Children s Group lessons When do lessons take place? Monday - Friday from 3.30pm and Saturday 11.00am-1.00pm. How do I enrol my children on the swimming lesson programme? To be placed on the waiting list, please contact the Swimming Lesson Co-ordinator. Places from the waiting list are allocated on a strict date received order. A course re-enrolment system is in operation whereby priority for places will be given to those children already on our swimming programme. If you or somebody you know is interested in learning to swim, or is looking for some additional stroke improvement then this leaflet contains information to assist you with your choices. Here at Impington Sports Centre we have a full range of lessons available to children either within a group or on a one to one basis. All our teachers are Amateur Swimming Association qualified so you can be assured of the best teaching available. What is the waiting list? The waiting list is in operation for those people interested in lessons that are currently full. Once you have registered your child, our Swimming Lesson Co-ordinator will contact you when a place becomes available. If any of your contact details change and we have not been informed, then you will be removed after 3 attempts to offer you a place. At what age can I enrol my children for swimming lessons? Children can enrol in Teddy Bear classes from the age of 3 and Non-swimmers from the age of 5. There are no age restrictions for private lessons. Once a child reaches the age of 16, they need to be enrolled into the adult lesson programme. How long is each lesson in duration? All junior lessons are half an hour except for the Advanced classes that last 1 hour. Do I need to bring swimming aids with me? The centre provides most equipment but some children may feel more comfortable with their own arm bands or buoyancy jackets. If this is the case then please do bring them along. For swimmers beyond the beginner stage it is advised that you bring a pair of goggles to the lessons. When do I pay for the lessons? Lessons need to be paid for by the date stated on each enrolment form. Failure to do so will mean the offer of the placement will be withdrawn and released to someone else. If you are new to our lesson programme and have been offered a place from the waiting list then we allow 3 days for payment. What happens if my child has been put in the wrong class based on ability levels? At the start of each term all children will be assessed to ensure that they are in the correct class. For those that have been placed incorrectly, arrangements will be made to reallocate them to a more appropriate class. 1

Where can I leave my child s clothes? Lockers are provided for all swimmers and it is advised that all valuables be locked away. You need 1 coin for the locker, which is refundable. Any clothes left in the cubicles will be removed as this restricts spaces for others. Will the day and time of my child s lesson change after the first term? It is possible that your child s lesson will change. This will depend on the child s assessment and the need for progression. Also from time to time groups will change with demand for various categories of lessons. Swimming Stages I m learning to swim Teddy Bears These lessons are for children aged 3-5yrs and are primarily aimed at increasing water confidence through play and basic water practices. Once a child become 5yrs old they progress to the Non-Swimmer class. Non-swimmers This class is for children who are unable to swim without some sort of buoyancy aid. Children must be able to swim 5 metres on their front and back and submerge head confidently before progressing. This category introduces children to the swimming environment and develops water confidence. Progress to Beginners Class. Beginners Once children are able to swim 5 metres on their front and back they will start to experiment more with the different strokes and work on technique practices. When they consistently swim 10 metres on their front and back and are completely confident in the water then they can progress to a Deep Beginner class that will be instructed in deep water to build their stamina. Progress to Deep Beginners. Deep Beginners This class is in the Deep End of the pool where children will work on their stamina and water confidence. Children will be working towards being able to swim all 4 strokes with a recognised technique and be able to swim comfortably 25m on their front and back with good technique. Progress to Improvers 1. continued >> 2

I m learning to swim Improvers 1 Children must be able to swim 25 metres of Front Crawl with an over water arm recovery and 25 metres of Back Crawl confidently. They should be able to demonstrate a good technique in breastroke and be completely confident in deep water. At this stage children are introduced to a range of water skills working towards streamlining and efficient breathing techniques. Progress to Improvers 2. Improvers 2 Swimmers must be able to swim Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breastroke and Butterfly with good technique. Children should be confident in rolling in the water and able to surface dive and pick up objects. In addition turns and diving are introduced. Progress to Improvers 3. Improvers 3 Children must have efficient techniques for Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breastroke and Butterfly. They should also be able to perform a standing dive and will be introduced to the other aquatic discipline s including personal survival, water polo and synchronised swimming. Children will be swimming lengths. Progress to Advanced. Advanced Children should be able to execute all competitive turns and racing starts. This class is ideal for older children who wish to continue their swimming but without entering the competitive environment. Advanced Lessons are 1 hour long and children will be swimming lengths. 3

How many children are in a class? Teddy Bears have a maximum of 8 children, Non-Swimmers have a maximum of 10 and the rest of the classes have a maximum of 10, but may increase to 12 depending on assessments done during the first lesson of each term. What happens if a person enrolled in a swimming course cannot attend lessons due to illness? In the case of prolonged illness prior to the start of the course then a full refund will be given providing a medical certificate supports the claim. Once the course has started then a administration charge will be applied to the remainder of the course providing illness continues for more than 4 weeks. No refunds will be given for lessons missed due to common ailments. What happens if my child cannot attend the allocated time or day? If the place offered is unsuitable, please let us know at the time of re-enrolment. We will make every effort to allocate a more suitable time or day. On some occasions this will not be possible due to classes not being available or fully booked. Are swimming badges awarded? Our priority is to teach your children to swim using efficient strokes which can be used in swimming pools and other forms of water. Our teachers continually assess strokes and skills throughout the course and as long as the term is at least 12 weeks long then badges will be assessed and awarded at the end of term. There is an additional charge for badges and certificates. 4

Group lesson Terms & conditions Important: Please read these conditions before signing the enrolment form. Payments All fees to be paid by the date specified on the enrolment form. There will be no reminders and failure to do so will result in the offer of the place being withdrawn. Cancellation by Impington Sports Centre Impington Sports Centre reserves the right to cancel any of its courses or sessions without notice and to vary from time to time the scale of charges. All details contained within this leaflet are correct at the time of going to press. However, subsequent changes may occur. Cancellation by the customer ONLY prolonged sickness (i.e. more than 4 weeks) supported by a medical certificate will be considered for a pro-rata refund or credit. For cancellations other than sickness an administration charge of will apply in each case. Medical notes Any medical information that may affect your child s ability to learn to swim, needs to be recorded on the enrolment form. This information is kept in strict confidence and is only given to the teacher to assist in their instruction of your child. If your child suffers from Asthma or is taking any other form of medication, please ensure that it is brought on to poolside. Spectators All accompanying persons must remain in appropriate waiting areas and should not in any way disturb the teacher or lesson. There is a strict NO SPECTATING policy on poolside. If you wish to discuss your child s progress with a teacher, please leave your name and telephone number at reception. We kindly ask parents/guardians not to wait in the changing room area during lessons. Teachers All teachers are ASA qualified and have the authority to move any individual that has been placed in an unsuitable class or whose behaviour persistently disrupts the lessons. The teacher will discuss this with the parent or you will be contacted by the swim lesson co-ordinator. Injury, Loss or Damage Impington Sports Centre does not accept liability for any personal injury or loss or damage to property however caused. Personal belongings should be locked in the lockers provided and not in the cubicles changing area. 5

Private lessons One to one lessons are available during the general swim times either during the day, early evening or the weekends. Each lesson lasts half an hour and must be booked and paid for at Reception before the lesson starts. Dates and times can be arranged with the instructor. PLEASE NOTE: we do not offer a refund for cancellation or non-attendance at lessons under any circumstances or reschedule lessons. These lessons are for the swimmer to decide which strokes to learn and improve. There is also a long waiting list for these lessons, but names can be added at the Centre Reception. Can people share the lessons? We will allow a maximum of 2 people to attend a lesson together and these are usually siblings or friends. However, to make that possible the swimmers do need to be of the same ability. My child has a private lesson. Can I swim at the same time? It is usually possible for other members of the family to swim at the same time but you need to check the pool timetable to make sure the lesson doesn t run over two sessions. Crash Courses Intensive swimming lessons are arranged during half term breaks and over the summer for children. These involve a half-hour lesson at the same time Monday to Friday and there are classes available for Beginners and Improvers. Further information on each course is displayed around the Centre in the weeks proceeding the holiday. Is there a lower age limit for the Crash Course? The same age restrictions apply as the weekly lessons. Does the Centre run any diving courses? We offer diving courses for children throughout half term breaks and over the summer. These are designed to build confidence for stronger swimmers who have not fully grasped a correct technique. Any other questions or comments? If you have any other questions about our swimming lesson programme and you cannot find the answers here then please contact our Swimming Lesson Co-ordinator. swimlesson@impington.cambs.sch.uk 6
