1 R e c o m m e n d a t i o n s R e p o r t Overview The Universal Screener assessment is used to identify readiness for on-grade level instruction. It is typically administered at the beginning of the school year; though it may also be used on an ongoing basis as part of an RtI model. The assessments are composed of Math and Reading/Language Arts and are developed for each grade level, K-10. To identify readiness, they include multiple grade levels to allow sufficient reach to identify student weaknesses. For grades 2 and above, approximately 50% of the test content is from the target grade, 25% from one grade below and 25% from two grades below. The kindergarten assessment has two different forms reflecting earlier and later kindergarten content, given the rapid development at that level. The test contains items; it does not bookmark and thus must be completed in one sitting. Questions are not randomized to allow the teacher to read the assessment aloud as needed. As a formal assessment, proper test administration measures must be taken. Personalized Learning When assigning a Universal Screener, you have the option of activating the personalized learning option. By selecting YES for this option, Classworks will will assign a Skills Snapshot (SS) assessment for any KEY strands that have a scaled score BELOW the target expected for the testing window in which the test was administered. NOTE: The Skills Snapshot assessments will not generate immediately. They will generate overnight and will be available to the student the following day (see Universal Screener Job Aid for more information). The Skills Snapshot assessment uses questions from the quick quizzes to determine which skills within the key strand the student needs remediation on. An instructional learning path (ILP) is automatically generated upon completion of the SS, assigning work for only the skills the student is weak in (see Skills Snapshot Job Aid for more information). To view the Skills Snapshot(s) assigned to each student, click on the View Results link for each student (see Monitor Assessments Job Aid) Curriculum Advantage User Training 1

7 What to Look For 11 As you read the report, notice the following items: What is the average scaled score of the group (data displayed above the blue target readiness bar)? How does the average score compare to the target readiness based on time of year fall, winter, spring? This can be used when needing to compare a student to his/her peers. (If displaying by class, teacher or school) Is there a key strand that is an overall weakness for the group? Is there a key strand that is an overall strength for the group? Use this information to help with classroom planning. When viewing individual student results, be sure to notice the amount of time the student spent taking the assessment. Is it an adequate amount of time? The overall score and overall readiness reflects data for all strands assessed. The individual strand information is displayed for only key strands, which are strands where enough questions were asked to be able to identify it as a student strength or weakness Curriculum Advantage User Training 7

You can export the Universal Screener data into a.csv (i.e. spreadsheet) file. The file contains the following Universal Screener data: Test name Student District ID Student name Correct/Attempted for each strand assessed Student's scaled score Readiness score (based on corresponding testing window) Testing Window in which test was administered Date student completed the assessment Duration (in seconds) Teacher name School name Note: The Display By options do not apply to export. 10 User Training 2013 Curriculum Advantage
