(3-0) COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course attempts to develop interest, aptitude, and understanding through visual, verbal, and actual experience with media. A basis for approaching visual arts is also included. Emphasis is on exposure to the visual arts. PREREQUISITES: None COURSE OBJECTIVES: To learn basic terminology, concepts and styles of visual art To be able to talk and write about art To be able to approach work you have never seen before To list the elements and principles of design To have an awareness of materials used by visual artists To experience various materials and methods of artists COURSE OUTLINE: 1. You must let them know that they need to call down to Distribution to have it played and plugged into a television in the Learning Lab. In other words, it is actually played in the Distribution Office, but you are able to watch it at one of the televisions upstairs in the Learning Lab. If you have any trouble with that, please call me on my cell phone and let me know right away, so that I may make other arrangements or talk to someone about getting the problem resolved.) *Outlines may be subject to change upon instructor s request. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: 1. Students should buy and read the textbook, Living with Art by Mark Getlein, ninth edition, and bring it each class day. 2. Students are expected to read the assigned material prior to the assigned class time and come prepared to ask and answer questions. 3. Students are responsible for all information presented in class, including announcements and information on Moodle.

5 5 4. Tests will be given on a timely basis and must be taken on Moodle. In exception, make-up tests will be given only with prior approval and must be taken in the LRC within one day of the initial test date or special arrangements will be made to take it on Moodle. 5. Essays must be typed, double spaced, no larger than size 14 font. 6. At least ten (10) hours of class time will be conducted in a studio environment with hands-on experiences which relate to lecture material. Students will need to buy studio materials as needed (see art supply list). 7. Attendance will be taken every session. Studio assignments and demonstrations are vital to the course, so attendance is a must. Attendance and participation are 200 points of your final grade. Absences will lower your grade. An attendance sheet will be passed around each class day for you to sign. It is your responsibility to make sure you sign it. If you leave early after signing the attendance sheet (without letting me know in advance), you will be marked absent for that day. Attendance is also required on Moodle. You must sign in two days a week to read announcements and other information. Treat this class like a job. Your presence and communication is vital to your success. If you are going to be absent, call my extension 8758 at JALC, and leave your name, phone number, class name and section (or day and time). You can also me at desander@jalc.edu ( preferred). Class participation will be considered in the final grade.

6 6 9. Moodle. Moodle is used as a supplement to this course. Most handouts will be available on Moodle. The exams will be taken on Moodle also. Your name will be automatically added to Moodle. See instructions below to see how to log in. This information is also on the main page of Moodle before you sign in. Setting up your Volmail and logging into Moodle is vital to this course. It will be your connection to knowing your progress in the course. You will receive important messages through Moodle. Also, remember to get set up with Voltext if you have a cell phone. That way you will know when the school is closed because of weather or other emergencies. Attention Students Using Moodle After the end of the spring 2011 semester, you will have a new Moodle username that is tied to your new Volmail account. Your old student ID username accounts were disabled June 9, 2011 at 8:00 a.m. Use your new accounts. Your new login and password follow this pattern: username: first initial of your first name followed by your last name and the last four digits of your student ID number. password: the two-digit day of your birth followed by the two-digit month of your birth and the last four digits of your social security number. This does not apply to those logging into Blackboard. 10. Electronic Devices. Cell phones, MP3 players, lap tops (used for anything other than taking notes), I Pads and the like, are prohibited during class. Please put cell phones on silent or vibrate. Please only answer calls that you think are an emergency. Please leave the classroom when answering those calls. Do not text during class. I CAN SEE YOU! THERE ARE NO TABLE CLOTHS TO HIDE YOUR HANDS! You will be asked to leave the classroom and be marked absent if you do not put your phone away. No lap tops are to be open and used during films. It would be a distraction for other students as well as yourself. Student Success Center. Tutors may be obtained through the Student Success Center. Contact the staff in C219 if this service is desired. John A. 7 7 English Writing Center/Tutoring. For assistance with writing assignments in any college course, students are encouraged to visit The Write Place in Room C215. English instructors are available for one-on-one tutoring each semester during hours posted at the center. Financial Aid. Students who receive financial assistance and completely withdraw from classes prior to 60% of the semester being completed (approximately 2-3 weeks after midterm) could be responsible to return a portion of their Federal Pell Grant award. Prior to withdrawing from courses, students should contact the Financial Aid Office. Course Withdrawal Information. It is expected that you will attend this class regularly. If you stop attending for any reason, you should contact your advisor and withdraw officially to avoid the posting of a failing grade (an E) to your transcript. It is also advisable to discuss the situation with your instructor before dropping. METHODS OF EVALUATION: Grades are based on the accumulation of points that reflect your increased learning. While each semester has its unique character, the following can be used as a guideline. Students should expect that their classroom experience will result in some variation from the outline below.
