The continuing growth in population and the simultaneous endeavour to improve living conditions lead to the development of new, fascinating and challenging projects in the hydropower, dam and river engineering field. This could be the n ILF s capabilities ILF s design and consulting services in the field of hydropower, dam and river engineering focus on the sustainable use of water and on the protection against water-related disciplines that are required to meet the complex tasks involved in hydropower projects in house and is in the position to offer its clients integrated project solutions. W a t e r i s e n e r g y use of hydropower, as a renewable source of energy, to meet the ever-increasing energy demand, or the construction of dams for irrigation and drinking water purposes, and for the protection of living space against floods, or the regulation and restoration of rivers. hazards, considering the needs of the resident population and demonstrating a responsible approach towards the environment. Most of these projects are very complex and require a wide range of engineering disciplines. ILF has a proven record of successfully completing numerous projects in the field of hydropower, dam and river engineering around the world. With years of experience, ILF is now recognised for its expertise and professionalism. Competent design and consulting services in this field have been the trademark of ILF Consulting Engineers for more than three decades. ILF provides all the engineering

H y d r o p o w e r p l a n t s With the demand for energy and the consumption of fossil fuel growing worldwide and considering all resulting environmental problems, new impetus is given to the production of electricity by the use of hydropower and thus the use of renewable energy resources as an environmentally friendly form of power generation. Hydropower plants differ largely depending on the topography and the resulting plant components. In mountainous terrain, highhead plants of different sizes are designed as required by the specific conditions and requirements encountered. ILF s scope of services covers the complete array of power plant sizes from drinking water power plants through small and medium-size plants to large-scale power plants with reservoirs. In areas, where high head is not available, electric generation plants are built on rivers applying the low-head, high-flow principle. They are designed as small- and large-scale schemes, depending on the specific needs and conditions. Pumped storage is a special type of power plant, which can convert inexpensive base load power into profitable peak load power. The services provided by ILF in the field of hydropower engineering are complex and require the input of various disciplines, all of which are available in-house. When designing and implementing projects, ILF attaches prime importance to economic efficiency and to a responsible attitude towards the environment. n ILF s specialist capabilities in the hydropower engineering field include: Elaboration of master plans to identify economically and ecologically feasible power plant sites in a specific area Studies of alternatives Socio-economic studies Geological and geotechnical consulting services Hydrological analyses Steady-state and transient hydraulics Overall design of hydropower plants, including electro-mechanical equipment and infrastructure Design of rehabilitation works for existing hydropower plants Preparation of documents for environmental impact assessments Design works focusing on landscape protection and nature conservation

D a m s Dams are constructed for hydropower plants, irrigation and drinking water purposes and flood retention schemes. Dams may be designed to provide more than one service. In developing countries, dams are often constructed as multi-purpose facilities, which especially for large projects contribute to the development of infrastructure and an improvement in living standards. Dams are very complex structures, the design of which is not only influenced by the scheme s actual technical functions but also by various other boundary conditions. Influencing factors such as geological conditions, earthquakes and floods, the availability of construction material, as well as environmental and social issues play a decisive role in the design process. n ILF s specialist capabilities in the dam engineering field include: Studies of alternatives to develop optimum solutions Socio-economic studies Geological and geotechnical consulting services Hydrological analyses Overall design of dams, including electro-mechanical equipment and infrastructure Design of rehabilitation works for existing dams Studies on sedimentation and flushing of reservoirs Preparation of documents for environmental impact assessments Design works focusing on landscape protection and nature conservation ILF has acquired extensive experience in the development and implementation of dam projects and it is owing to our profound knowledge and high technical standard that our clients consider us a competent partner in this field.

R i v e r e n g i n e e r i n g River interventions differ greatly depending on the respective conditions and objectives. They are, to a great extent, determined by the intended purpose, the possible construction options, the ecological conditions and the economic efficiency. River engineering works may be necessary for various reasons, e.g. flood defence or river regulation. Flood defence may be necessary to protect settlement areas and other land use sites, such as traffic routes, against flooding and the resulting damage. The corresponding project components encompass flood control levees or bank protection works. Additionally flood water retention areas can be created to attenuate flood peaks. River regulation may be necessary to stabilise the flow behaviour or the sediment regime of a river or to adjust it to new conditions. In addition there is a growing trend for river restoration works which aim at returning rivers to a close approximation of their natural state. The tasks involved in river engineering are highly diversified and present special challenges, but the knowledge acquired by ILF through years of experience allows our engineers to meet every new challenge.. n ILF s specialist capabilities in the river engineering field include: Elaboration of river management programmes Hydrological analyses Steady-state and transient open-channel hydraulics Socio-economic studies Geological and geotechnical consulting services Overall design of river engineering works, including equipment and infrastructure Preparation of documents for environmental impact assessments Design works focusing on landscape protection and nature conservation

The environment and landscape planning department deals with these aspects in connection with national and international projects. Pursuing a target and deadlineoriented project policy, all design activities are performed adopting an interdisciplinary E n v i r o n m e n t a n d l a n d s c a p e p l a n n i n g Project engineering requires an increased awareness and professional knowledge of land use and environmental issues. Taking these aspects into account is crucial to enhance the public s acceptance of a project. A timely consideration of environmental concerns is critical for a fast implementation of the permit application procedure. approach. During the entire design process, a continuous effort is made to balance both technical parameters and environmental issues. Other major fields covered by ILF are flora and fauna analyses focusing on environmental and ecological aspects in the project area, as well as soil science and water balance studies. In addition to providing design services, ILF also co-ordinates interdisciplinary design teams and offers assistance to authorities. ILF employs a permanent team of environmental experts, and maintains contacts with numerous associated experts in various fields who may be consulted, should a unique problem develop. n ILF s specialist capabilities in the environment and landscape planning field include: Ecological mapping Environmental impact assessment studies Assessment of implications for a site in compliance with the EU Habitats Directive Interdisciplinary value engineering assessments Planning of design, mitigation and compensation measures Landscape conservation support plans Restoration strategies Supervision of construction works from an ecological point of view Emission and immission calculations Preparation of permit application documents
