The standard installation for a ViaSat antenna is either a wall mount on panel or lap siding, or a sloped roof mount on asphalt shingles. The mount bracket, mast tube, and adjustable stays used in the standard installation come from the installation kit. Do not use any other wall or sloped roof mount hardware. Preparing for a Wall Mount Tool List Electric drill A 1/8 inch wood bit Ratchet wrench with a ½ inch socket A 7/16 inch open-ended wrench 1/2 inch open-ended wrench Carpenter spirit level Note: Not all installations need every tool. Materials The Technician must provide the following material: Surfaces 2 5/16 X 3 inch lag screws 4 5/16 X 2 inch lag screws Silicone sealant The approved surfaces for a wall mount are Caulk gun Pencil Ladder Panel or lap siding Brick or poured concrete* Hollow or cinder block* *Note: Job aids for installing on these surfaces are available in the Field Support eguide, located in the Support Portal. 2 Structural Elements The approved structural elements for a wall mount are wall studs. Lag screws in the mount bracket and the adjustable stays must be in the structural element. Other Considerations The grounding block must be within 20 feet of the building ground The total cable run from the modem to the TRIA must be less than 150 feet All antennas must be located at least 20 feet from overhead power lines and three feet from any standard power circuit or electric light. Danger! Locate power lines before you start the installation. These include overhead power lines, electric lights, and power circuits. Position the mount to allow for properly mounted stays on either side of the bracket. Position the mount so that the building eave or overhang will not block or partially shadow the Line of sight Each attachment point (in the mount bracket and the adjustable stays) must support 300 pounds of pull out pressure. Attaching the Mount Bracket The mount bracket is a single unit consisting of the mount plate and two side flanges. It is the centerpiece of the mount, so correctly attaching it to the surface is critically important. Action 1. Locate the structural elements (studs) that will place the bracket in position to meet all of the appropriate considerations listed above. Do not forget to allow room for the adjustable stays. Note: Use a stud finder, if desired. Alternatively, locate the nails securing the panel to the wall, which usually align with the center of the stud 2. Hold the bracket in the center of the stud and mark the top center hole. Remove the bracket and drill a 1/8 inch hole on the mark. Fill the hole with silicone sealant. 3. Using one 3-inch lag screw, tie the bracket to the wall through the top center hole. Leave it loose enough to level the bracket. Page 2 of 7

3 Action (continued) 4. Use a carpenter spirit level to verify that the centerline of the bracket, defined by the bracket center holes, is level. Use a pencil to mark the second center hole and the four outside corner holes of the bracket. 5. After removing the bracket, use these marks to drill the remaining five 1/8 inch holes; one in the center bottom and one in each outside corner. 6. Reposition the bracket over the holes. Fill each hole with silicone sealant. Install two 5/16 X 3 inch lag screws in the center holes. Install a washer and a 5/16 X 2 inch lag screw in each of the brackets outside corners. Verify that the bracket is level and securely tighten all the screws Adjustment for Narrow Siding When lap siding is less than seven inches, the bracket will span more than one siding run. Support the overlapping portion of the bracket with a wood or plastic spacer that is the same thickness as the siding. The spacer should extend at least one inch on either side of the bracket. Center the spacer over the stud and attach to the siding with screws Use the lap siding installation process outlined above, to install the bracket. Page 3 of 7

4 Mount Tube The mount tube connects the mount bracket to the antenna. Approximately 5 ½ inches from top of the tube is a vertical bend. At the bottom of the tube is a set of installation holes used to connect the mast tube to the mount bracket. Action 1. To attach the mount tube to the mount bracket, align the square installation holes at the base of the mount tube to the arched slots at the bottom of the mount bracket. From inside the mount tube, insert a 5/16 X ¾ carriage bolt through each of the mount tube square holes and through the associated arched slot on the bracket. Secure the carriage bolts using 5/16 serrated flange nuts on the outside of the bracket flange and hand-tighten. 2. Swing the mount tube up, and align the round installation hole at the base of the mount tube with the center hole in the mount bracket flange. Page 4 of 7

After placing the tube correctly, pass a 5/16 X 2 ½ hex head tap bolt through the center hole in the mount tube flange, through the round hole in the mount tube, and through the other center hole in the mount tube flange. Secure the tap bolt using a 5/16 serrated flange nut and hand-tighten. 4. Use a carpenter spirit level or pole level to level the mount tube. Complete final mount tube leveling after installing the stays. Page 5 of 7

6 Adjustable Stays The installation kit provides the adjustable stays that are required on every wall and sloped roof mount. These are the only ViaSat-approved stays; do not use mono-poles or other stays. Action 1. Loosen all of the 5/16 joint hardware. Caution! Edges may be sharp; gloves are recommended. 2. Slide the collar over the top of the mast tube, and down below the bend about 3 inches. Point the collar flanges towards the mount surface. 3. Place one stay on each side of the collar flanges, and pivot the stays so that they splay outwards. Use a 5/16 x 1 ½ carriage bolt, and position the carriage bolt through the knuckle on the adjustable stay, both holes on the collar and the knuckle on the second adjustable stay. Note: The are two ways to tell whether they are attached to the collar correctly: 1) the collar flanges meet when the carriage bolt is completely tightened, 2) the knuckles near the collar splay in opposite directions. 7 Action (continued) 4. Position the stays 9 to 13 inches from the mount bracket, which should put the stays at an angle of 60 to 65 from the tube as shown. 5. Using the same technique and process as the mount bracket, attach the foot of each adjustable stay to the structural element (stud) using two 5/16 x 2-inch lag screws per foot. Install the stays on opposite sides of the mast tube. Remember to add silicone sealant to the holes before adding the lag screws. 6. Tighten all the 5/16 hardware joints. 7. Complete final mount tube leveling after installing stays and tighten all mount nuts and screws. Page 7 of 7
