1 Name: Grade Level(s) Grades 9 12 Goal(s) Students will learn how to use Study Plan to start preparing for the SAT. Time Required Materials Needed Before You Begin Student Objectives 45 minutes A computer with access to a printer Access to My College QuickStart A Study Plan worksheet Be sure that all students can access their most recent PSAT/NMSQT information through My College QuickStart. 1 Students should review their score reports. We recommend using the My Online Score Report lesson plan. Students should print the Study Plan Checklist; they can use it to track their progress as they study. (Use the Print Student Plan Checklist link on the Study Plan home page.) Learn about the differences and similarities between the PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT Review test-taking advice Practice answering SAT questions 1. Go to and click Sign In. See the Connecting to My College QuickStart with an Access Code or Connecting to My College QuickStart without an Access Code lesson plans for step-by-step instructions. 2. Once you re signed in, click on the orange box labeled Study Plan. Student Assignment 3. Click the Meet the SAT tab at the top of the page. 4. Scroll down and read the Compare the SAT to the PSAT/NMSQT section. 5. Answer Question 1 on the Study Plan worksheet. 1 Occasionally, students will enter conflicting/incorrect identifying information on the PSAT/NMSQT answer sheet, or during the log-in process, which can cause delays in connecting to the online information. Usually, these delays can be resolved by contacting the College Board. If conducting this exercise as a group, more time to identify these situations should be added. page 1

2 6. Click the Critical Reading tab. 7. Note the number of sentence completion questions you answered correctly and record the figure on the worksheet (see Question 2). 8. Note the number of passage-based reading questions you answered correctly and record the figure on the worksheet. 9. Repeat Step 8 for each of the question types in the Mathematics and Writing sections. 10. Answer Questions 3 and 4 on the worksheet. 11. Click the Critical Reading, Mathematics, or Writing tab, depending on your answer to Question 4. For example, if you chose student-produced responses, click the Mathematics tab. 12. Click the Get Test-Taking Advice link. Student Assignment (cont d) 13. Read the advice and answer Question 5 on the worksheet. 14. Click the Review & Practice link. 15. Choose the question type you need the most help with and click the Answer SAT practice questions and review test directions link. The practice questions will open in a new window. 16. Read the directions and look at the example, if one is provided. 17. Answer the practice questions and read the answer explanations. 18. Answer Question 6 on the worksheet. page 2

4 1. Help students think about the best way to use the study plan and other resources to improve their skills and prepare for the SAT. Suggested discussion questions: When do you plan to take the SAT? How much time should you devote to preparing for the SAT? How often should you review? Check off the items you ve completed on the Study Plan checklist. Which three items will you tackle next? Look at the Review Math Concepts page in the Mathematics section. Which area of math do you need to work on most? Classroom Discussion Topic (Optional) What steps can you take to improve your skills? What specific questions do you have for your teachers that will help you improve your skills? 2. Facilitate a discussion about test taking. Suggested discussion questions: What do you find most challenging about taking tests? What advice can you share about preparing for a test? Do you have any pretest rituals? What advice do you have about actually taking the test? Which SAT question type do you find easiest? Most difficult? Why? What advice can you share about any of the question types? page 4
