Reseach Quality Fainess and Authoship Ode Magaeta Ackeman Univesity of Wateloo Simina Bânzei Aahus Univesity axiv:08.339v [cs.gt] 6 Aug 0 Abstact The ode in which authos ae listed on an academic pape detemines the cedit that each eceives on a co-authoed publication influencing hiing tenue and pomotions. Two of the pevalent autho odeing schemes ae alphabetical which involves listing authos in lexicogaphical ode of thei last names implying that all contibuted equally and by contibution whee authos ae listed in deceasing ode of thei contibution to the pape. We pefom a game theoetic analysis of the impact of autho odeing schemes uncoveing two consideable advantages of alphabetical odeing: it leads to impoved eseach quality and it is the moe fai of the two appoaches in the wost case. On the othe hand contibutionbased odeing esults in a dense collaboation netwok and a geate numbe of publications than is achieved using alphabetical autho odeing. Futhemoe authos can ovecome some of the limitations of contibution-based odeing by pefoming otations altenating who is the fist autho on joint papes. This often allows authos to achieve optimal eseach quality and pefect fainess unde any given contibution scheme; howeve this is obtained at the expense of tuthfulness. The autho acknowledges suppot fom the Natual Sciences and Engineeing Reseach Council of Canada. The autho acknowledges suppot fom the Sino-Danish Cente fo the Theoy of Inteactive Computation funded by the Danish National Reseach Foundation and the National Science Foundation of China unde the gant ) and fom the Cente fo eseach in the Foundations of Electonic Makets CFEM) suppoted by the Danish Stategic Reseach Council.

Intoduction Autho odeing is an impotant issue in all academic communities. Reseach pefomance is judged in lage pat by publication ecods and how much one benefits fom each publication depends on thei position within the pape s autho list as well as the conventions of the field. In shot how authos ae listed affects the cedit they eceive fo thei contibutions. Given the citical ole that autho odeing plays in academia it is supising how little is known of the effects of name-odeing conventions. What influence do odeing schemes have on individual authos? Do these scheme have any global effect on eseach communities whee they ae applied? What can authos do to ovecome the limitations of contibution schemes? Ou goal in this pape is to povide a famewok fo studying the effects of autho ode schemes and addess these questions. Autho odeing schemes. Seveal name-odeing conventions ae commonly applied in academic communities each coesponding to a diffeent cedit allocation scheme. One such common convention fequently used in mathematics economics and theoetical compute science is to list authos in lexicogaphical ode of thei last names. We efe to this method as alphabetical autho odeing. The intention is to occlude any diffeences in contibution effectively implying that all authos should eceive equal cedit fo the pape. The Ameican Mathematical Society [] explains that in most aeas of mathematics joint eseach is a shaing of ideas and skills that cannot be attibuted to the individuals sepaately... Detemining which peson contibuted which ideas is often meaningless because the ideas gow fom complex discussions among all patnes... mathematicians taditionally list authos on joint papes in alphabetical ode. Anothe dominant convention is odeing by contibution listing authos in deceasing ode of thei contibution to the poject. This scheme appeas fo example in psychology and applied banches of compute science. Non-alphabetical listing sends a clea signal that ealie authos should eceive geate cedit than the authos listed late. Fo instance the Ameican Psychological Association [3] ecommends odeing authos by thei elative contibution: Authos ae esponsible fo detemining authoship and fo specifying the ode in which two o moe autho s names appea in the byline. The geneal ule is that the name of the pincipal contibuto should appea fist with subsequent names in ode of deceasing contibution. Among disciplines whee authos ae listed by contibution the peceived contibution of authos can still vay substantially. Fo example in psychology the fist autho typically eceives substantially geate utility than othe authos. On the othe hand pactical banches of compute science usually assume that contibution diminishes moe gacefully with autho ode. Thee ae seveal othe conventions in addition to alphabetical and contibution but these two appea to be the most pevalent. A game-theoetic pespective. Most pevious wok on autho-ode schemes focused on empiical studies and two playe simulations. In this pape we analyse the effects of autho-ode schemes fom a game-theoetic pespective. To this end we intoduce a game theoetic model fo analysing the impact of autho odeing schemes on academic collaboation. Specifically we popose a model of ovelapping coalitions using a vaiant of theshold task games [6]. Benefits of odeing alphabetically. Alphabetical autho odeing offes seveal supising benefits to both individuals and the community as a whole. Namely this contibution scheme leads to highe eseach quality and is the moe fai of the two pominent contibution schemes consideed hee in the wost case.

. Highe eseach quality: Pehaps the most appealing featue of the alphabetical autho odeing scheme is that it leads to impoved eseach quality. Specifically unde this scheme authos solve the most difficult pojects possible and the lagest numbe of such pojects. Seveal studies povide empiical evidence fo this phenomenon. Bown et al. [5] found that alphabetical odeing is positively coelated with eseach quality in the maketing liteatue. Laband and Tollison [6] found a simila tend in the economics eseach liteatue whee two-autho papes that ae alphabetized ae moe fequently cited. In addition Joseph et al. [4] set up a two playe simulation and found that the tendency towads alphabetical autho odeing inceases as acceptance ates decease and that fo a fixed acceptance ate papes whose authos ae listed in alphabetical ode tend to be of highe quality. Why does alphabetical odeing esult in highe quality eseach? Ou model offes a compelling explanation showing that odeing authos alphabetically encouages collaboation between simila playes. In paticula it gives incentive fo the stongest playes to combined thei effots. As all authos involved would eceive equal cedit they all have vested inteest in ceating a high quality joint poject. On the othe hand when a contibution scheme whee the fist autho eceives most of the cedit is applied the stongest playes get penalized fo collaboating as only one of them can take the fist autho slot. As a esult alphabetical odeing leads to the completion of moe difficult tasks than when authos ae listed by contibution.. Bette wost-case fainess: Anothe impotant issue with egad to autho odeing is that of fainess. Seveal authos peviously suggested that contibution-based odeing is the moe fai of the two common name-odeing schemes. Lake [7] agues that alphabetical autho odeing is uninfomative and unfai. This scheme gives aise to a vesion of the Matthew Effect wheeby eades ae likely to assume that the moe established authos have made a geate contibution giving them dispopotional cedit at the expense of the emaining authos. Alphabetical odeing also benefits those whose last names stat with lettes that occu ealie in the alphabet [8] [9] []). Fo these easons Lake [7] agues fo egulations to enfoce odeing authos by contibution. Howeve upon fomal examination it becomes clea that all contibution schemes suffe fom unfainess in some cases. Supisingly ou wost case analysis eveals that alphabetical odeing is the safe choice: Geate loss due to unfainess is possible when odeing by contibution than alphabetically. That is the wost case loss due to unfainess that a playe can incu when elying on the alphabetical odeing scheme is not as sevee as the loss a playe can incu when odeing by contibution. Benefits of odeing by contibution. We also demonstate seveal advantages of odeing by contibution. Specifically we conside the scheme that allows those who make a vey small contibution to be listed as authos. Unde such contibution schemes authos late in the list eceive a coespondingly small popotion of the cedit. Using such a contibution scheme esults in a dense social netwok. The finding that contibution odeing esults in a geate numbe of collaboatos has been peviously obseved though empiical data analysis by Newman [8] who epots that the aveage numbe of collaboatos an individuals has is moe than fou times highe in biology whee contibution-based odeing is used) than in mathematics whee authos ae listed in alphabetical ode). Futhe it is shown that the numbe of collaboates in physics anothe field that elies on alphabetical autho odeing is simila to that found in mathematics. Lastly we also show that this contibution scheme esults in a highe eseach poductively as measued by the aveage numbe of publications pe autho. 3

Ovecoming limitations of contibution odeing via otations. What ae authos to do if they ae unsatisfied with the implications of the autho odeing scheme that they ae equied to use? Sometimes thee is a solution. When the same playes collaboate on multiple pojects they can pefom otations by altenating who is the fist autho on joint papes. Pefoming otations allows playes to achieve pefect fainess as well as solve the highest quality pojects that thei combined effots can attain. Although otations offe benefits to individual playes they come at the pice of tuthfulness. Authos no longe ty to use autho odeing to demonstate how much they contibute to individual papes undemining the intended pupose of the contibution scheme. Model The academic game is a netwok fomation game. Let N = {...n} be a set of playes. Each playe i has a budget of weight w i consisting of a set of coins C i = {c i...c ini }. Evey coin c ij has a positive weight w ij and n j= w ij = w i i N. The playes can fom ovelapping coalitions to solve diffeent pojects. A poject of weight w can be solved eithe by one playe who invests a coin of weight w to the poject o by two playes each of which contibutes with one coin and the sum of the two coins is w. A playe can paticipate in multiple pojects simultaneously by investing a diffeent coin to each poject they paticipate in. The same pai of playes can solve multiple pojects togethe and each coin can only be used once. Let T R + denote a set of poject weights and let f : R + R + be a ewad function. Fo evey w T thee exists an infinite numbe of available pojects of weight w. Solving a poject of weight w T gives a ewad fw) which is divided among the playes that solved the poject. In this pape we study games with polynomial ewad that is fw) = w whee >. Unless othewise noted thee exist pojects fo evey positive weight i.e. T = R + ). We ae also inteested in a estiction elevant to academic games: T = [t ) whee t is efeed to as a confeence tie. Solving a poject of weight w gives ewad fw) if w t and zeo othewise. Finally in each academic community thee exists a geneal peception of the significance of being fist o second autho on a pape. Without pio knowledge about the specific pape and authos involved the elative contibution of each autho on a two-authoed pape can be evaluated using a fixed contibution vecto [φ φ] whee / φ <. That is the community assumes that the contibution of the fist and second autho ae φ% and φ)% espectively. Next we define coalition stuctues and utility in academic games. Definition Coalition Stuctue). Given an academic game a coalition stuctue CS is a patition of all the coins such that evey coin c ij of playe i is eithe a singleton poject o is paied with a coin c kl belonging to anothe playe k N \{i}. Definition Utility). Given an academic game and a coalition stuctue CS let CS i be the set of pojects that playe i contibutes to i N. The utility of i is: u i CS) = P j CS i v i P j ) whee {P...P m } is the set of pojects solved unde CS wp j ) is the weight of poject P j and wp j ) if i completes P j alone v i P j ) = φ wp j ) if i is the fist autho on P j φ) wp j ) if i is the second autho on P j Example. Conside a two playe academic game whee playe has the set of coins C = {c c } playe has set of coins C = {c } the weights of the coins ae: w = 3w = w = and =. The possible coalition stuctues ae: CS = {c }{c }{c }) CS = {c c }{c }) and CS 3 = {c c }{c }) whee fo each poject the coins ae listed by deceasing size. The utilities of the playes ae as follows: 4

CS : u CS ) = w +w = 3 + = 0 and u CS) = w = = 4. CS : u CS ) = φ w + w ) + w = φ 5 + = 5φ + and u CS ) = φ) w +w ) = 5 φ) CS 3 : u CS 3 ) = φ) w +w ) +w = 9 φ)+9 and u CS 3 ) = φ w +w ) = 9φ. The est of the pape is oganized as follows. In section 3 we study academic games with indivisible budgets whee each playe has exactly one coin and analyze eseach quality and fainess in that setting. In section 4 we study academic games with discete budgets whee each playe can have multiple coins of diffeent sizes and investigate eseach quality fainess otations and implications fo the esulting social netwok. In Section 5 we discuss elated models and in section 6 we conclude with avenues fo futue investigation. 3 Indivisible Budgets We begin by consideing the indivisible budgets setting whee each playe has a single coin coesponding to the scenaio whee evey playe is involved in a single poject. We will show that this setting is sufficient to demonstate the main benefits of the alphabetical odeing scheme namely that it leads to optimal eseach quality and is moe fai than contibution-based odeing in the wost case. Fist we intoduce ou main solution concept namely paiwise stability. Paiwise stability is the standad solution concept in netwok fomation games []. We say that a coalition stuctue CS is paiwise stable if: Fo all i N u i CS) wi. That is i cannot impove by allocating his coin to a singleton poject. Fo all ij N with w i w j eithe u i CS) φ w i +w j ) o u j CS) φ) w i +w j ). That is i and j cannot both stictly impove by deviating to a joint poject. Futhe we note that the alphabetical odeing scheme guaantees the existence of a paiwise stable coalition. In contast thee ae games whee no paiwise stable coalitions exist unde contibution-based odeing. See Appendix B fo details. 3. Reseach Quality We show that alphabetical odeing esults in highe eseach quality than is possible using some contibution-based scheme; Namely it leads to the solution of the highest numbe of pojects of optimal quality. Since playes can wok eithe by themselves o in pais the most difficult poject that a set of playes can solve esults fom the combined effots of its two stongest playes. We call a poject of this difficulty a had poject. Obseve that a coalition can solve multiple had pojects. We begin by consideing identical playes showing that they solve the maximum numbe of had pojects unde alphabetical odeing. Poposition. Conside an academic game with identical playes and indivisible budgets. Then evey paiwise stable coalition stuctue solves the maximum numbe of had pojects i.e. pojects equiing two playes wheneve < φ <. Poof. In ode fo the maximum numbe of had pojects to be solved in evey paiwise stable equilibium it should be the case that two singleton playes can stictly impove thei utility by woking on a joint poject. The conditions fo the fist and second autho espectively ae: φ > and φ) > o equivalently < φ <. 5

Note that the maximum numbe of had pojects is always solved unde alphabetical odeing φ = ). We now conside a game with two playe types heavy playes of weight and light playes of weight 0 < <. A contibution scheme can encouage same-laye collaboations esulting in the solution of the maximum numbe of had pojects. Altenatively a contibution scheme can encouage coss-laye collaboations o discouage all collaboation. Theoem. Conside an academic game with indivisible budgets and two types of playes of weights and espectively whee 0 < <. Then evey paiwise stable coalition stuctue has +). Only same-laye collaboations when ++) < φ < min +) ++) ).. Only coss-laye collaboations when max 3. No collaboation when < φ < +) o φ > max ) +) ++) < φ <. +) + Obseve that setting φ = we obtain that alphabetical odeing solves the highest numbe of had pojects while odeing by contibution in the ange given by ) solves the highest numbe of intemediate pojects i.e. pojects equiing one heavy and one light playe). 3. Fainess It has been agued that alphabetical odeing is unfai [7] as it gives the same cedit to all authos even when they do not contibute equally. Ou esults show that both alphabetical and contibution-based odeing can esult in substantial degees of unfainess. Thee is no single contibution scheme that is best fo all coalitions. Yet unfainess can actually be geate when using contibution-based odeing than when the alphabetical odeing scheme is applied. That is the wost case loss due to unfainess is highe when using contibution-based odeing than when odeing authos alphabetically. The fundamental difficulty is that in eseach communities the contibution scheme is fixed. Even listing authos by contibution is not infomative enough since the membes of the community have a pedetemined notion of the popotion of wok contibuted by each autho. While in some communities the second autho is assumed to have done modeately less than the fist in othes the contibution of the second autho is consideed to be negligible compaed with that of the fist. Whateve the case may be authos do not typically get to choose the contibution vecto since that would equie changing the peception of the entie community. Consequently in most cases some degee of unfainess is inevitable. Fomally if two playes allocate weights x and y espectively to a joint poject then the ewads should be popotional to the effot invested i.e. x x+y ) x+y) and y x+y Thus the fai contibution vecto fo this poject is uniquely defined as: C = ) ). ) x+y) espectively. [ ] x x+y y x+y. We study the losses of the playes due to the fixed contibution vecto. Fo each playe the loss is given by the nomalized) diffeence between the actual contibution and the peceived contibution. Recall that wp) denotes the weight of poject P. Given a contibution scheme φ the loss due to unfainess of playe i in a coalition stuctue CS whee he solves poject P is: 0 if i completes P alone w L i = i φ wp) w i if i is the fist autho on P if i is the second autho on P w i φ)wp) w i Note that the loss due to unfainess paallels the pice of anachy Nisan et al [9]). 6

We exploe the degee of unfainess pemitted by both the alphabetical and contibution-based odeings. We begin by consideing identical playes. Since they contibute equally to a poject alphabetical autho odeing coesponds to the unique fai contibution vecto fo thei poject while all contibution-based odeing schemes esult in some degee of unfainess. Theoem. Conside an academic game with identical playes and indivisible budgets. Then alphabetical odeing is the unique) fai contibution vecto. When φ > the loss due to unfainess is φ fo at least n of the playes unde evey paiwise stable coalition stuctue. The highest loss due to unfainess occus when φ =. Coollay. Thee exists an academic game and a contibution-based odeing such that the loss due to unfainess is fo half of the playes unde evey paiwise stable coalition stuctue. Fo example when = half of the authos lose 50% of thei ightful cedit. Next we pove the wost case loss due to unfainess allowed by alphabetical autho odeing. That is we will illustate a coalition stuctue whee a playe obtains the wost possible loss due to unfainess that can occu when alphabetical autho odeing is applied. To this end we begin with a moe geneal esult concening loss due unfainess fo diffeent playe types. Theoem 3. Conside an academic game with two ) types of playes of weights and espectively. If φ is in the ange max +) ++) < φ < +) then in evey paiwise stable coalition stuctue: If φ < all the heavy playes involved in a collaboation incu a loss of φ+) due to unfainess. If φ > φ)+) all the light playes involved in a collaboation incu a loss of due to unfainess. We now demonstate the wost case loss fo alphabetical autho odeing. Poposition. Conside an academic game with two types of playes of weights and espectively whee < <. Then unde alphabetical odeing all the heavy playes that collaboate incu a loss of ) due to unfainess unde paiwise stability. It follows that the wost case loss due to unfainess fo alphabetical odeing is no geate than. Poof. In the two playe setting alphabetical odeing disadvantages the heavie playe. We equie a bound of to ensue that heavy playes collaboate with light playes. The esult follows by Theoem 3. The wost case is obtained when appoaches. Fo example when = the unfainess scoe is 30%. While in the pevious theoems we showed that the contibution vecto can affect as many as half of the playes involved we show that fo abitay games the same wost case bounds hold fo individual playes. Theoem 4. Conside an academic game with indivisible budgets and abitay weights. Then fo ) evey playe the wost case loss due to unfainess is no geate than odeing while it can be as high as unde contibution-based odeing. unde alphabetical Poof. Note that the bound in Poposition epesents the wost case loss due to unfainess that any playe can incu unde alphabetical odeing. The esult follow fom Poposition and Coollay. Note that ) < fo all >. Although the fainess of any contibution scheme depends on the specific coalition whee it is applies we find that contibution-based odeing can esult in a geate degee of unfainess than is allowed by alphabetical autho odeing. 7

4 Discete Budgets We now tun ou attention to the geneal model whee each playe has multiple coins allowing playes to wok on multiple pojects simultaneously. While the esults above also apply in the multiple coins setting we uncove seveal phenomena that cannot be obseved when each playe has a single coin. Fist we genealize some of ou findings to this geneal model in paticula showing that alphabetical odeing leads to impoves eseach quality. We then demonstate the following inteesting phenomenon: Thee exist many games in which the contibution vecto does not matte since the playes can pefom otations by altenating between being fist and second autho on joint pojects. Rotations can allow playes to each optimal eseach quality as well as obtain pefect fainess. Ou solution concept is paiwise stability fo games with ovelapping coalition stuctues. Given that a playe can be involved in multiple pojects simultaneously it is impotant that one estimates coectly the eactions fom the est of the playes befoe ageeing to be involved in a deviation. We follow the ecent liteatue on ovelapping coalition fomation games Elkind et al [6] Zick et al [3]) and study efined eactions to a deviation. In shot when playe i is involved in a deviation fom a coalition stuctue CS he o she can expect the following: Evey non-deviating playe which is hut by the deviation etaliates and dops all the pojects with i. Note that unless i and j ageed to deviate togethe a playe j is hut by the deviation when at least one of j s pojects has been discontinued by the deviatos. The unaffected playes ae neutal and they maintain all of thei existing pojects with i. Definition 3 Paiwise Stability). A coalition stuctue CS is paiwise stable if: No playe i can dop some of his existing pojects and stictly impove utility in the esulting coalition stuctue CS No two playes i and j can eaange the pojects among themselves and possibly dop some of the pojects with the emaining playes such that both i and j stictly impove thei utility in the esulting coalition stuctue CS whee CS is such that the emaining playes have efined eactions to a deviation. See Appendix C fo an example of paiwise stability fo discete budgets. 4. Reseach Quality We now genealize the esults of Section 3. showing that alphabetical odeing encouages high eseach quality in the discete budget model. Fist we conside discete budgets with identical coins whee alphabetical odeing leads to the solution of the geatest numbe of had pojects. Poposition 3. Conside an academic game with discete budgets and identical coins. Then alphabetical odeing ensues the existence of a paiwise stable coalition stuctue. Moeove evey paiwise stable coalition stuctue unde alphabetical odeing solves the geatest numbe of had pojects. Next we conside the game whee playes have two coins types and demonstate the type of collaboations that esult fom diffeent contibution schemes. The following esult povides anothe illustation that alphabetical odeing leads to the solution of the geatest numbe of had pojects. In addition this esult shows what contibution schemes esult in the geatest numbe of intemediate pojects whose weight consists of one lage and one small coin. 8

Theoem 5. Conside an academic game with discete budgets whee each playe has two types of coins of size and espectively. Then evey paiwise stable coalition stuctue:. has only equal effot collaboations consequently solving the maximum numbe of hadest +) pojects when ++) < φ < min +) ++) ).. has only unequal effot collaboations when max 3. has no collaboations when < φ < +) o φ > max 4. Fainess ) +) ++) < φ <. +) + We genealize ou esult fo identical playes fom Section 3. to the setting of identical coins showing that alphabetical odeing is the unique fai contibution vecto while all othe contibution vectos can cause substantial loss due to unfainess. Fist we genealize loss due unfainess to the discete budgets setting. Fo each playe the loss is given by the nomalized) diffeence between the actual contibution and the peceived contibution aggegated ove all the pojects that the playe is involved with. Given a contibution scheme φ the loss due to unfainess of playe i in a coalition stuctue CS whee he solves poject P...P m is: L i = w i m j= L ip j ) w i whee 0 if i completes P j alone L i P j ) = φ wp j ) if i is the fist autho on P j φ)wp j ) if i is the second autho on P j Obseve that this definition is equivalent to the one given in Section 3. when a playe has only one coin. Theoem 6. Conside an academic game with discete budgets and identical coins. Then alphabetical odeing is the unique fai contibution vecto. When φ > up to n playes can incu a loss due to unfainess of φ. In the following section we demonstate an appoach fo eadicating loss due to unfainess in the discete budget model egadless of what contibution scheme is applied. 4.3 Rotations Playes can sometimes ovecome the limitations of a fixed contibution scheme. That is they can simultaneously solve the highest numbe of hadest pojects and achieve fainess egadless of the contibution vecto. We efe to this phenomenon as otations. Playes who collaboate on multiple pojects agee that one of them will be the pimay autho on half of thei publications while the othe will be fist autho on the emaining ones - egadless of whethe this epesents thei actual contibutions. We fist demonstate this esult fo budgets with multiple identical coins. Poposition 4. Thee exist academic games with discete budgets and multiple identical coins such that fo evey φ the maximum numbe of had pojects is solved in a efined paiwise stable equilibium and no playe suffes any loss due to unfainess. Rotations can also be used to ovecome loss due to unfainess when coins ae not equied to be identical and pojects equie the combination of diffeent coin types. ) ). 9

Poposition 5. Let be the confeence tie. Thee thee exist academic games with discete budgets whee each playe has two types of coins one of size and one of size so that thee is no loss due to unfainess in the efined paiwise stable equilibium. Howeve otations do not completely solve the poblem of loss due to unfainess. Even when playes who wok togethe on multiple pojects pefom otations thee ae seveal ways in which some unfainess can be etained. This occus fo instance when when a pai of playes collaboate on an odd numbe of pojects. Howeve an even wose loss due due to unfainess in incued by those unable to find a collaboato who will wok with them on seveal diffeent pojects. We demonstate the latte phenomenon in the case of identical coins. Poposition 6. Conside an academic game with discete budgets and identical coins. Even when otations ae pefomed thee can be a playe who incus a loss of φ due to unfainess wheneve φ >. Poof. Conside a coalition with an odd numbe of playes whee evey playe has m + coins whee n m+ all but one of the playes collaboate with one othe playe on m pojects and the emaining playe collaboates with a diffeent playe on evey poject as the second autho. Then that last playe incus a loss of φ due to unfainess. Note also that all but the last playe eceive optimal utility and the last playe does not deviate due to the lowe bound on φ. 4.4 Implications fo the Social Netwok Fo the next esult we illustate the following phenomenon obseved in [8]: when the playes use odeing by contibution they have moe co-authos than when using alphabetical odeing. In the next esult we conside the setting in which evey playe has a budget consisting of big coins and small coins. The big coins epesent a lage amount of effot while small coins epesent vey little effot such as cheap talk but can nevetheless contibute to impoving the quality of a pape. Allowing fo cheap talk esults in a much highe numbe of collaboations. Poposition 7. Conside an academic game with discete budgets whee each playe has seveal big and small coins of sizes and ε espectively whee 0 < ε and the confeence tie is. The small coins epesent cheap talk and we assume that each playe has moe big coins than small coins. Then when φ > max ++ε) +ε) ) evey paiwise stable equilibium solves the maximum numbe of pojects and the aveage numbe of collaboatos pe playe is the highest possible. We note that thee exist games in which odeing by contibution allows to simultaneously maximize the numbe of had pojects and the total numbe of pojects. We illustate this phenomenon when thee exist both an uppe and lowe bound on the hadness of the ewaded pojects. Coollay. Conside an academic game with discete budgets whee each playe has seveal big coins and small coins of sizes and espectively whee 0 < < the confeence tie is and the maximum poject hadness is +. Then when φ > max ++) +) ) evey paiwise stable equilibium solves the maximum numbe of pojects each of the pojects solved is the hadest possible and the aveage numbe of collaboatos pe playe is the highest possible. 5 Related Models The academic game is a non-tansfeable utility game with ovelapping coalitions and is elated to seveal existing classes of coalitional games such as theshold task games [6] coalitional skill games [4] and weighted voting games [0]. Thee exist seveal co-authoship models in the economics and 0

compute science liteatue among which we mention the following. Clippel et al [7] [0]) study the division of a homogeneous divisible good when evey playe epots an evaluation of the othe playes contibution. The main popeties equied fom a mechanism ae impatiality a playe s shae of cedit should only depend on the othe playes epots and consensuality if thee exists a division that agees with all the individual epots then that division should be the outcome. Clippel et al. show that fo thee playes thee exists a unique impatial and consensual mechanism. Kleinbeg and Oen [5] study a noncoopeative model fo the allocation of scientific cedit. Thei main finding is that eseach communities may have to ove-ewad thei key scientific challenges to ensue that such poblems ae solved in a Nash equilibium. Jackson and Wolinsky [3] intoduce a co-autho model with netwok extenalities whee each playe has a unit of time and can divide it among diffeent collaboations. The output of each poject depends on the total time invested in it by the two collaboatos and the stuctue of the netwoks that aise in equilibium depends on the synegies between the playes. Anshelevich and Hoefe [] study contibution games on netwoks whee the playes have concave o convex ewad functions and give bounds on the pice of anachy. Anshelevich et al [] study contibution games whee the playes ae embedded in a social context and may incopoate fiendship elations o altuism into thei decisions and analyze the social welfae in the equilibium. 6 Discussion and Futue Wok We intoduced the fist game theoetic model fo studying autho odeing schemes. Ou model poposes possible causes fo phenomenon peviously obseved empiically. Namely we show that alphabetical odeing encouages collaboation between playes of the same type in paticula leading to collaboation between the stongest playes in the community. This may explain the peviously obseved coelation between the use of alphabetical autho odeing and highe eseach quality. Futhemoe ou model leads to seveal pedictions on the effects of autho odeing schemes commonly applied in academia. Most notably we show that otations can be used to ovecome some of the limitations of contibution-based odeing schemes. This phenomenon suggests an avenue fo futue empiical investigation. In paticula it would be inteesting to exploe how fequently otations appea in pactice as well as thei influence on individuals and the community at lage. Thee ae also seveal natual extensions of ou model left fo futue investigation. Fo instance we could conside continuously divisible budgets which would allow playes to abitaily patition thei esouces among multiple pojects. Anothe natual genealization is to fomulate a nontansfeable utility game with ovelapping coalitions and study the stable outcomes using the coe solution concept. Futhemoe the game can be studied unde moe geneal families of ewad functions such as concave and convex functions. Peliminay analysis confims some of ou main findings in these genealized settings in paticula the finding that alphabetical odeing leads to high eseach quality. 7 Acknowledgements We thank Pete Bo Miltesen and Yai Zick fo valuable discussion.

Note that wheneve two playes have a singleton coin each they will fom a joint poject if the coins ae identical and φ is in the ange in case o if the coins ae diffeent and φ is in the ange of case. Theoem 6 estated): Conside an academic game with discete budgets and identical coins. Then alphabetical odeing is the unique fai contibution vecto. When φ > up n playes can incu a loss due to unfainess of φ. Poof. Since all coins ae identical alphabetical odeing is the fai contibution vecto. We now conside the loss incued fo abitay φ. Conside the case whee one of the playes has n coins and the est of the playes have one coin each. The coalition stuctue whee the playe with many coins collaboate with evey playe that has a single coin and the playe with many coins is the fist autho on all of his pojects. Given the lowe bound on φ the playe will not deviate to wok along. Futhemoe no pai of playe with a single coin will deviate to wok togethe because at least one of them would not impove his o he utility by deviating. Poposition 4 estated): Thee exist academic games with discete budgets and multiple identical coins such that fo evey φ the maximum numbe of had pojects is solved in a efined paiwise stable equilibium and no playe suffes any loss due to unfainess. Poof. Let φ < and conside a two playe game such that playe has coins {c c } playe has coins {c c } and all the coins have weight. Conside the coalition stuctue CS = C C ) whee C = {c c } and C = {c c } such that playe is the fist autho on poject C and playe is the fist autho on poject C. It can be veified that both playes eceive the best possible utility which coincides with the fai allocation given by alphabetical odeing. Moeove the coalition stuctue is paiwise stable. None of the playes can gain by investing the coin fom thei second-autho poject to a singleton poject since the othe playe will etaliate and dop the othe poject as well. Poposition 5 estated): Let be the confeence tie. Thee thee exist academic games with discete budgets whee each playe has two types of coins one of size and one of size so that thee is no loss due to unfainess in the efined paiwise stable equilibium. Poof. Conside the two playe game whee evey playe has m coins of size and m coins of size. The playes can then ceate m pojects each of size + and have each playe be the fist autho on exactly m pojects. Then the total contibution coesponds to the total cedit eceived esulting in loss due to unfainess ove all pojects. Moeove the coalition stuctue is paiwise stable. None of the playes can eceive any utility fom woking alone using any of thei coins. Poposition 7 estated): Conside an academic game with discete budgets whee each playe has seveal big and small coins of sizes and ε espectively whee 0 < ε and the confeence tie is. The small coins epesent cheap talk and we assume that each playe has moe big coins than small coins. Then when φ > max ) ). ++ε) +ε) ) evey paiwise stable equilibium solves the maximum numbe of pojects and the aveage numbe of collaboatos pe playe is the highest possible. Poof. To ensue that evey paiwise stable coalition stuctue solves the maximum numbe of collaboations it should be the case that the best way in which a playe can invest a big coin is by paiing it with a small coin. That is a playe pefes being the fist autho on a poject of 4

weight + ε instead of eithe second autho on a had poject o the only autho on a singleton poject. The conditions ae: φ) < φ + ε) and φ + ε) > o equivalently φ > max +ε) ++ε) ). Then in evey paiwise stable coalition stuctue all the big coins ae paied with small coins and the aveage numbe of collaboatos is maximal. We note that while alphabetical odeing solves the highest numbe of had pojects both the numbe of pojects completed and the numbe of collaboatos is twice as low. Finally the singleton coalition stuctue solves the same numbe of pojects above the confeence tie. Howeve in this case the playes have no collaboatos and the quality of the pojects completed is lowe compaed to the case when cheap talk is allowed. 8.3 Appendix B We show that alphabetical autho odeing guaantees the existence of a paiwise stable coalition stuctue; Futhemoe it can always be found in polynomial time. In contast the use of contibution based odeing can esult in thee being no paiwise stable solutions. Theoem 7. Conside an academic game with diffeent playes and indivisible budgets. Unde alphabetical odeing a paiwise stable coalition stuctue is guaanteed to exist and can be computed in polynomial time. Poof. Let N = {...n} be the set of playes and without loss of geneality let w w... w n. Stat with an empty coalition stuctue: CS =. Iteatively pai wheneve possible the two playes with the heaviest weights among the emaining playes. Let {kk +...n} be the emaining set of playes duing some iteation. If w k +w k+ ) wk and w k +w k+ ) wk+ then let CS CS {kk +} othewise CS CS {k}. We claim that the esulting coalition stuctue CS is paiwise stable. If CS contains coalition { } then playe does not have an incentive to fom anothe pai o move to a singleton since ucs) w and ucs) w +w j ) j N \{}. Similaly playe does not deviate if a singleton in CS. Iteatively wheneve the fist k playes do not have an incentive to deviate playe k + does not have an incentive to deviate eithe. Thus CS is paiwise stable. On the othe hand contibution-based odeing does not guaantee the existence of stable coalition stuctues even unde fixed tie-beaking ules. Poposition 8. Thee exist academic games with diffeent playes and indivisible budgets such that when contibution-based odeing is used no paiwise stable coalition stuctue exists. Poof. Conside a thee playe game with weights +ε and +ε espectively whee = ε = 0.8 and φ = 0.8. It can be easily veified that no coalition stuctue is stable. The singleton coalition stuctue is blocked by the playes with weights {+ε} the coalition stuctue CS = {+ε}{+ε}) is blocked by {+ε} CS = {+ε+ε}{}) is blocked by {+ε} and CS = {+ε}{+ε}) is blocked by {+ε+ε}. 9 Appendix C We illustate paiwise stability fo discete budgets using the following example. Example. Conside an academic game with thee playes sets of coins: C = {c c } C = {c c } and C 3 = {c 3 c 3 } and the coalition stuctue CS = {c c }{c c 3 }{c c 3 }). If playe deviates by allocating the coin c to a singleton poject then expects that the esulting coalition stuctue is CS = {c c }{c }{c 3 }{c c 3 }) since playe is not hut by the deviation. 5

On the othe hand if the deviating coalition is {} and the deviation consists of foming the joint poject {c c } then playes and can expect that the esulting coalition stuctue is CS = {c c }{c }{c }{c 3 }{c 3 }) since playe 3 is hut by the deviation and dops all the pojects with the deviatos.
