The New SAT and Your School System College Success Skills EP Committee Wednesday February 2, 2005 Emphasis on New Math Content on SAT I
What is the SAT? An assessment of life (and college) success skills:! Mathematical problem solving! Reading for understanding! Writing using standard written English
Who Makes the SAT?! The College Board and ETS! College Board nonprofit association composed of more than 4,300 schools, colleges and universities and other educational organizations whose mission is to prepare, inspire and connect students to postsecondary secondary opportunities.! ETS Educational Testing Service
Why Is the SAT Changing?! To better reflect today s classroom practices and curriculum by replacing analogies with short reading passages and quantitative comparisons with more math problems, some including content from thirdyear collegepreparatory math! To reinforce the importance of writing skills! To help colleges make better admissions and placement decisions
What s New About the New SAT?! Students will be asked to write an essay as well as answer questions to assess their use of standard written English! The critical reading section (currently verbal) will be become a reading assessment analogies will be eliminated! Math section will add items from Algebra II and quantitative comparison questions will be eliminated
Didn t They Already Make a New SAT a Few Years Back?! SAT is 77 years old! Current revisions started in 1990! 1994 First New Revision Longer reading passages, elimination of antonyms and the openended ended response items and use of calculators of math section writing section suggested but not adopted! Newest New SAT March Writing section (delayed by technology, or lack thereof in 1994, to electronically send data to readers across the country)! 2 Sections (Math and Verbal) now 3 Sections (Math, Writing, Critical Reading) Score ranges will remain the same and reliability and validity between old and new scores will remain equivalent
Will the New SAT Be Harder?! No, the new SAT will be designed so that a student who could score a 500 on the math section (for example) of the current SAT could score a 500 on the math section of the new test.! 97% of collegebound students complete 3 years of math so the test will more closely measure the math they are already studying.! Extensive field trials confirmed that students are taking more upper level math, which is why the overall difficulty of the test is not affected.! While the test is longer, field trials also confirmed that the increased length of the test has no impact on the students scores.
Math Section! Aligning SAT to classroom practice by adding Algebra II content! National Center of Education Statistics 70 % of all high school students finish Algebra II or equivalent by the time they graduate and 75% complete four or more years of math! Most 4 year colleges require three years of math (through Algebra II)
College Board s Math Committee Recommendations! Strongly recommend the use of a scientific or graphing calculator (rather than allowing all kinds of calculators)! Include additional Number and Operations Concepts! Include Algebra II (thirdyear math concepts)! Include additional Geometry and Measurement Concepts! Include additional Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability concepts
Additional Algebra II Concepts! Absolute Value! Rational Equations and Inequalities! Radical Equations! Manipulation with Integer and Rational Exponents! Direct and Inverse Variation! Function Notation and Evaluation! Concepts of Domain and Range! Functions as Models! Linear Functions Equations and Graphs! Quadratic Functions Equations and Graphs
Revised SAT Verbal Section Renamed Critical Reading Strengthens alignment with classroom practices! Measures knowledge of genre, cause and effect, rhetorical devices, comparative arguments, and the ability to recognize relationships among parts of a text.! Long and short reading passages are taken from different fields: Natural sciences Humanities Social sciences Literary fiction! Short reading passages, which replace analogies, will measure the kind of reasoning formerly measured by the analogy section.
Revised SAT Verbal Section Renamed Critical Reading Strengthens alignment with classroom practices Analogy items The new SAT critical reasoning section will no longer include analogy item types. Critical reading items will embed analogical reasoning tasks within the context of reading and analyzing texts, which is a more authentic measure of how students use analogical reasoning to support critical reading, both in and out of the classroom.
New SAT Writing Section Prompts Prompts will be written to be easily accessible to the general testtaking taking population, including students for whom English is a second language (ESL), and to be free of figurative, technical, or specific literary references. Prompts will be relevant to a wide range of fields and interests, not narrowly related to specific topics. Prompts will be tested to ensure that they do not carry any bias across subgroups.
Time Specifications Critical Reading Math Writing Variable Section 3 hours 75 minutes 75 minutes Two 30minute sections and one 15minute section 30 minutes Current SAT Two 30minute sections and one 15minute section 3 hours 45 minutes 70 minutes Two 25minute sections and one 20minute section 70 minutes Two 25minute sections and one 20minute section 60 minutes Two multiplechoice sections (one 25minute section and one 10minute section) and one 25minute essay 25 minutes New SAT
Test Content and Question Types Current SAT New SAT Critical Reading Math Writing Sentence Completion Critical Reading: Long reading passages Analogies Multiplechoice items, studentproduced responses, and quantitative comparisons measuring: Number and Operations; Algebra I and Functions; Geometry; and Statistics, Probability, and Data Analysis. Sentence Completion Critical Reading: short and long reading passages Multiplechoice items and studentproduced responses measuring: Number and Operations; Algebra I, II, and Functions; Geometry; and Statistics, Probability, and Data Analysis. Multiplechoice items: Improving sentences and paragraphs, and identifying sentence errors. Studentwritten essay: Effectively communicate a point of view on an issue, supporting a position with reasoning and examples.
Test Scores Current SAT New SAT Critical Reading V CR Math M M Writing (Subscores) W Will include 2 subscores: Essay (1/3 of writing score) Multiplechoice (2/3 of writing score)
the skills students need to succeed in college are also the skills that they need to succeed in twentyfirst century life, whether or not they are going on to college. Thus, the skills required by the new SAT are precisely those needed by all students today.
