1 Parents Information on writing levels The information on this page is provided to help parents understand how children's writing is assessed. What is the expected writing level of an "average" child? By the end of Year 2, the writing of an "average" child is expected to be a secure level 2 By the end of Year 4, the writing of an "average" child is expected to be a secure level 3 By the end of Year 6, the writing of an "average" child is expected to be a secure level 4 Since there is a wide range of learning within each writing level, the levels are sub divided into "low", "secure" and "high". Thus a child who starts the year with a writing level of "low level 3", for example, should progress to a "high level 3" by the end of the year. When is writing assessed? Teachers assess children's writing on a daily basis, using both written work and other work in class to gather information. Each half term, teachers gather a selection of each child's writing and perform a more formal assessment. Towards the end of the summer term, children may also complete "optional SATs" tests this provides additional information to support teacher assessment and also gives the children experience of "proper tests". Year 2 children and Year 6 children complete more formal Year 2 and Year 6 SATs tests at the end of the year. How is the assessment information used to help develop writing? Information gathered by marking children's work and from asking questions in class is used to support and challenge progress in the next lesson. Children are encouraged to see the marking comments as tips on how to improve their writing. For example, they may be asked to correct punctuation or spellings, be challenged to add more interesting adjectives or to include complex sentence structures. Children use strategies such as VCOP (Vocabulary, Connectives, Openings and Punctuation) in lessons in order to challenge themselves to up level or improve the sophistication of their writing. 1

2 Information is also used to direct planning of subsequent lessons and identify where individual children and/or small groups may need additional support with writing. What does a "secure level 2" piece of writing look like? Expected level for a Year 2 child. 2

3 A secure level 2 judgement is given as the child is able to: Sequenced sentences which convey meaning. Content is relevant and appropriate to the topic and uses an appropriate form e.g. understandable if it is a report, story, recount. Adventurous word choices which make a reader interested. Generally correct use of full stops and capital letters and evidence of use of other punctuation such as exclamation or question marks. Tenses e.g. past or present are generally accurate. Spelling reflects accurate use of high frequency words and phonics. What does a "secure level 3" piece of writing look like? Expected level for a Year 4 child. 3

4 Why the secure 3 judgement is given. Use of paragraphs to structure the writing and move it on. Use of adverbs to link ideas. Greater use of adventurous and interesting language. Range of punctuation including dashes, commas and secure use of basic punctuation show a more detailed skills base. Greater range of sentence types used to interest and excite the reader and develop the structure of the writing. Words selected for effect including adjectives, adverbs and elaborated nouns and lively adjectives e.g. glimmering rock. Understanding of presenting different forms of writing in different ways and how to adapt the style of writing to its purpose. Evidence of wider range of connectives beyond and. Sentences start in different ways not always a pronoun (I, we, You) 4

5 What does a "secure level 4" piece of writing look like? Expected level for a Year 6 child. 5

6 Why the secure 4 judgement is given. Accurate use of a wide range of punctuation e.g commas, speech marks, question marks. Punctuation used for effect and interest, Range of connectives used to join writing and a greater variety so, but, because, also Wide range of sentence types including complex and compound. Writing linked and well structured. Endings of work relate back to the start or the topic. Deliberate vocabulary choices to build interest and develop writing. Secure use of paragraphs to structure and organise writing effectively. Clear style and viewpoint developed e.g. use of feelings, emotions etc. Use of past and present tenses secure. Expansion of ideas with deliberate intent to develop ideas and convey meaning. 6

7 What does a "secure level 5" piece of writing look like? Expected level for a Year 6 child working at ABOVE the national average. 7

8 Why the secure 5 judgement is given: Clear purpose of writing and a consistent style engages the readers interest. Confidently organised and imaginative responses Features and format are established clearly and accurately. Writing consistently organised into paragraphs which helps the flow and cohesion of the writing. A wide range of vocabulary is used with deliberate and adventurous word choices adding interest and elaboration to ideas. Wide range of punctuation used accurately and with deliberate effect on the writing including commas, colons, semi colons etc. Well structured sentences including good command of complex and compund sentences. Range of sentence types add interest and variety to the writing. 8
