Resources list at the bottom of this document We are living in an age of potential over-sanitisation which may be causing - not ceasing - many illnesses. We ve introduced chemicals that can cause cancer, asthma and grueling allergic skin reactions and we use them up to tens of times per day in our homes. Powerful germ-killing ingredients known as quats, or quaternary ammonium compounds, were detected in more than 40 percent of antibacterial products under review. Quats can trigger asthma in otherwise healthy people after frequent low-dose exposures. These ingredients often hide out in antibacterial sprays and even fabric softeners. This is called antibacterial overkill. More than half of dishwasher detergent liquids contained bleach, another chemical shown to cause asthma. Chloroform a suspected human carcinogen has the ability to escape in fumes released by bleach-containing products. Formaldehyde a known human carcinogen is sometimes used as a preservative or may be released by other preservatives in cleaning products. Formaldehyde sometimes forms when terpenes found in citrus and pine oil cleaners and in some essential oils used as scents react with ozone in the air.

2 Sodium borate, also known as borax, and boric acid are added to many products as cleaning agents, enzyme stabilizers or for other functions. They may disrupt the hormone system and cause breathing problems. Toxic Cleaners to Always Avoid Because of the health risks often associated with the following cleaning products, EWG recommends avoiding: Air fresheners. Open windows or use fans instead. Antibacterial products. Antibacterial products, including ones containing triclosan, fuel the development of drug-resistant superbugs. Use a simple mixture of 9 parts water, 1 part white vinegar as a basic cleaner that kills many germs. Fabric softeners and dryer sheets. These products often trigger asthma and allergies. Use a quarter-cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle to naturally soften clothing and reduce static. Caustic drain cleaners and oven cleaners. These toxic ingredients can burn eyes and skin. Use a drain snake or plunger in drains. Often, simple ingredients like white vinegar, washing soda, essential oils and baking soda are all you need to adequately clean your home. In fact, many of us could actually benefit from more exposure to certain beneficial microbes. Homemade Melaleuca Lemon Household Cleaner/Bench Spray Total Time: 2 minutes : 1 cup ½ cup white vinegar 15 drops melaleuca oil 15 drops lemon Glass Cleaning Spray bottle 1. Fill spray bottle with ingredients. 2. Close bottle and shake to mix.

3 3. Swirl/shake bottle before each spray. Bathroom/Mold Spray Total Time: 2 minutes : 1 cup ½ cup white vinegar 10 drops melaleuca oil 10 drops lemon 10 drops clove oil Glass Cleaning Spray bottle 4. Fill spray bottle with ingredients. 5. Close bottle and shake to mix. 6. Swirl/shake bottle before each spray. Oven Cleaner Total Time: 3 minutes : 2 tablespoons castile liquid soap 1⅓ cup baking soda 6 drops orange essential oil (optional) ¼ cup organic white vinegar or apple cider vinegar water 1. In a glass bowl, blend all ingredients, using the water to help form a thick paste. 2. Brush onto the oven surface until completely coated. 3. Allow it to sit for about 8 hours or overnight. 4. Wear your gloves and wipe clean using a sponge and clean water.

4 Room Deodorizer/Shoe Stink Remover/Nappy Bin odour cleaner Total Time: 3 minutes : 1 cup bicarbonate of soda 6 drops of lemon essential oil 6 drops of orange essential oil (optional/or other oil of your choice) You will need a glass jar or small bowl and some fabric, or a paper towel and some string or an elastic band. 5. Drip essential oil in bicarb soda and then place cover over the bowl or jar and secure with the string or elastic band. Room Spray/Sheet Spray 45ml water 8 drops lavender oil 8 drops wild orange or lemon essential oil DIRECTION 1. Add to an atomiser bottle and spritz onto sheets as they hang on the line 2. Spritz into the air in a room you would like to deoderise Deep Clean Your Mattress 500g baking soda Essential oil Vacuum cleaner

5 DIRECTIONS 1. Before beginning, flip or rotate the bed, which is smart to do every six months to extend mattress life and prevent sagging. While you're working on your mattress, toss your bedding in the wash, and fluff duvets or feather beds in the dryer. 2. Open the box of baking soda and add 10 to 20 drops of your favourite essential oil. Close the box and give it a good shake to distribute the essential oil and break up any large clumps. Lavender is calming, citrus is great for an anti-fungal, clove is good for eliminating mould. All essential oils are naturally anti-bacterial. Dishwashing Tablets 2 cups baking soda 2 cups Borax 1/2 cup Epsom salt 1/2 cup vinegar drops lemon essential oil 2 ice cube trays Large container for storage Drain Cleaner 300grms Baking soda ¼ cup apple cider vinegar 8 drops lemon essential oil DIRECTIONS Let the combination bubble for 15 minutes in the drain, then rinse it with hot water.
