Compliments of Joli Tripp Ten Simple Ingredients to Make Your Own Healthy Home Cleaning Products Keep your nest sparkling clean the healthy way with these 10 simple ingredients: 1. White Vinegar Use: Fabric Softener How to Use: Add drops of the essential oil of your choice to a one-gallon jug of white vinegar. Add 1/3 cup to each laundry load. Be sure to shake the mixture prior to each use. Use: Toilet Bowl Cleaner How to Use: Add a cup of vinegar to the toilet along with a handful of baking soda, then scrub with your toilet brush. Watch out--it will foam! Use: Microwave Cleaner How to Use: Check out this link to to learn how to safely clean your microwave. Use: Tile Floor Cleaner How to Use: Mix one part vinegar and 2 parts warm water in a bucket. Mop the floors. No need to rinse. Note: Vinegar can be rather stinky. Add lavender, eucalyptus, rose oil or any citrus essential oil to your cleaning mixture to freshen up the smell. 2. Baking Soda (sodium bicarbonate)
Use: Scouring Powder for Kitchen Sink, Shower Pans, Tubs, etc. How to Use: Make a paste with a few drops of Lemon (or other citrus) essential oil. Great for removing soap scum buildup. Use: Drain Cleaner How to Use: Pour one cup baking soda and one cup vinegar down the drain. Plug the drain for 30 minutes or more. Once bubbles die down, run hot water down the drain. Do not use this method after trying a commercial drain opener--the vinegar can react with the drain opener to create dangerous fumes. Use: Stove top Cleaner How to Use: Put 1/3 cup baking soda in a bowl. Mix in enough warm water so that you get a nice moist paste. Put paste on a sponge or brush and scrub away. Use: Stainless Steel cleaner How to Use: Mix 2 Tbsp baking soda, ½ cup vinegar, 2 cups warm water in spray bottle. Mixture will foam up. When it stops bubbling, put on cap and spray stainless steel surface, then wipe clean. 3. Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca essential oil) Use: Disinfectant How to Use: 3 drops of Tea Tree Oil, 1 Tbsp of Vinegar in a spray bottle filled with water. Use: Mold and Mildew Remover How to Use: Make a spray with 2 cups water and ¼ tsp Tea Tree essential oil. Shake first and spray on trouble spots. 4. Salt Use: Oven Cleaner How to Use: Apply a paste of equal parts salt, baking soda, and vinegar in a cool oven and scrub. Use: Clean cast-iron pans How to Use: Combine olive oil and a teaspoon of coarse salt in the pan. Scrub with a stiff brush and rinse with hot water.
5. Castile soap Use: Carpet cleaner How to Use: Mix 3 cups water, ¾ cup Castile liquid soap, and 10 drops peppermint (or other oil as desired) essential oil. Rub the foam into soiled areas with a damp sponge. Let dry thoroughly and then vacuum. Use: Tub and Tile Cleaner How to Use: Combine 1 2/3 cup baking soda with ½ cup Castile soap. Add ½ cup water and 2 Tbsp vinegar. Shake before using. Apply with a cloth or sponge and rinse well. Use: Foaming Hand Soap How to Use: Mix together liquid castile soap and water (and an essential oil if you desire) in a foaming soap dispenser. Fill about one fifth of the bottle with soap, then top it off with water. Use: Dishwasher Detergent How to Use: 1 cup of liquid castile soap and 1 cup of water (8 drops lemon essential oil optional) in a quart-size glass jar. Add some of this mixture to one detergent compartment of the dishwasher, and fill the other compartment with white vinegar. Use: Dish Soap How to Use: Combine 1 cup of liquid castile soap and 3 Tbsp water (a few drops of essential oil optional) in a bottle of your choice. Shake well. Tip: Castile liquid soap is available at large grocery store chains, some Target and Walmart stores, but always online at Walgreens, Walmart, and Amazon. Be sure to get the unscented variety. Dr. Bronner's is a reliable brand of castile soap. 6. Lemon Essential Oil Use: Glass Cleaner How to Use: Combine 1 ½ cups vinegar, ½ cup water and 8 drops lemon or other citrus essential oil in a spray bottle and shake well. 7. Olive Oil
Use: Furniture polish How to Use: Mix 1 Tbsp of Olive oil, 1 Tbsp of Water and 1 drop of Lemon essential oil in an airtight container. Shake and apply to a clean cloth and wipe down furniture. Use: Wood Floor polish and cleaner How to Use: Apply a thin coat of 1 part olive vegetable oil and 1 part vinegar and rub in well. Careful, can be slippery. Use: Stainless Steel polish How to Use: Simply pour a small amount of olive oil on a cloth and buff. 8. Borax Use: Mold or Mildew Remover How to Use: Mix ½ cup borax and ½ cup vinegar to make a paste. Scrub with a brush or sponge and rinse with water. Use: Carpet Spot Cleaner How to Use: Mix 1/4 cup each of salt, borax and vinegar. Rub paste into carpet and leave for a few hours. Vacuum. Note: If you are concerned about the safety of Borax, check out this information about Borax from ScienceLab. Borax is available at most grocery stores in the laundry section. Environmental Working Group gives it an F rating. You can substitute washing soda for borax. 9. Hydrogen Peroxide Use: All-purpose cleaner and laundry whitener How to Use: 2 cups water, 1 cup Hydrogen Peroxide, 10 drops Lemon essential oil. Mix in a spray bottle. Use: Bathroom mold How to Use: Mix one part hydrogen peroxide (3%) with two parts water in a spray bottle and spray on areas with mold. Wait at least one hour before rinsing or using shower. 10. Washing Soda (sodium carbonate)
Use: Laundry detergent How to Use: Add ½ cup washing soda, ½ cup borax, 1 bar castile soap, grated (about 1 cup), ¼ cup baking soda, 15 drops lemon essential to lidded container. Cover and shake well. Use 3 Tbsp. detergent per load, or slightly more for very soiled clothes. Tip: Washing soda is available at most larger grocery chains but also available online. Washing soda is merely baking soda that has been baked. Arm & Hammer is a reliable brand of washing soda. Environmental Working Group gives it an A rating. You can also make washing soda yourself! Special note: Before applying any cleaning formula, test in small hidden areas if possible. Make sure to keep all home-made formulas well-labeled, and out of the reach of children.
