2 Title: Hills Like White Elephants Author: Ernest hemingway Summary of the text: A man and woman are waiting for a train in Spain. They travel a lot and drink excessively. They make reference to an "operation", which is an abortion. The man claims it is a simple operation and that once it is done everything will be "as it was." The girl seems less convinced but says she will do it because she "doesn't care about [herself], only about [him.]" They both drink heavily and they argue and talk "around the subject." The simile is used several times (para. 2,10, 11) These metaphors also allude to barrenness, "the country was brown and dry" as opposed to Jig's fertility. Now, she wonders if she'll ever have this chance again. "And once you take it away, you never get it back" (3). The couple drink a lot and they travel, which seems to be the only thing they do in life. The title, symbolic of the unwanted pregnancy, suggests that their excessive and frivolous lifestyle would change and become burdensome, but the white elephant is sacred, as is a child, and could provide more meaning to their lives than the superficial pursuit of travel and drinking.
