You do not need to have public speaking experience to do well in this course. The goal is to introduce you to some strategies that will help you organize, develop, and perform quality speeches. This class is designed, and should be, FUN. It will give you opportunities to speak and be heard. You must not only participate as a speaker, but also as a listener. It is important for every speaker to get the opportunity to speak to an audience, therefore, attendance is mandatory. You are allowed to miss 3 classes before it begins to negatively impact your participation grade. You must be present on the days that you are assigned to speak. If you need to miss a class, please me ahead of time. Assignments: Assignments must be turned in on their assigned day. Speeches must be done on your scheduled day. You may not trade days. You will receive a zero if you are not present to speak on your assigned day. Failure to do this will result in an automatic lowering of your grade. Speeches: The requirements for each of the speeches will be discussed in depth during class before each speech. Time limits are important and are set for a specific reason. You will have a 30 second grace period on either side of the time limit. One speech (the informative or either of the persuasive speeches) must be done, but ALL can be done, using a power point presentation. This is done to help you get comfortable using different mediums of presentation!

3 Common Sense: Grading: Topics must be of an acceptable nature. No profanity, of any form, is necessary and so it will not be accepted. Academic integrity standards must be met. If it is NOT your idea, cite it properly, or you may find yourself in serious academic trouble. The Penn State system of equivalencies will be used to determine your semester grade. A = A- = B+ = B = B- = C+ = C = D = F = 0-59 My Life Speech 100 points Informative Speech 300 points Persuasive Speech points Persuasive Speech points Classroom Decorum: By electing to take this course the student assumes a personal obligation to avoid disruption of class with ANY behavior that interferes with or disrupts the class or the teaching of the class. 5 The Assignment Details: Before Each Speech an outline must be submitted (in writing and in class), the outline is basic and contains the following: A. The full introduction B. The Body of the Speech (Broken down in Subjects and Subheadings) 1. Main Point a. Sub Point 2. Main Point a. Sub Point C. The full conclusion The outline should be written out in sentence form (that means complete sentences). It is simply a 1 page paper that gives a basic outline of what you will be speaking on. Proper organization can make your speech a lot easier to give. The Speeches: 1. My Life Speech This short 3 to 5 minute speech can be anything about you, your experiences, or your interests. Although this is a very basic speech, an outline must be turned in. 2. Informative Speech This is designed to help you pick the subject for your persuasive speeches and to begin to gather information and present a speech on the subject. The informative speech is meant to tell your audience about you topic. This speech should be between 5 to 7 minutes, with a 1 minute grace period. This assignment requires that a bibliography be turned in and it must contain 6 sources, 5 of which are from written, printed, traditional materials. Please use the MLA style for the bibliography. 3. Persuasive Speech 1 & 2 This of a subject that YOU believe is of importance and to which you desire to take a position either for or against it. Think of topics that are important to you, are of interest to you, or have impacted your life in some way. This is your chance to both inform and persuade individuals to accept your position as valid. This speech should be between 5 to 7 minutes, with a 1 minute grace period.
