2 INTRODUCTION The Land of Million Elephants Lao is a landlocked Country Area: 236,800 km 2, Population: 7.0 Million (2012) Capital City: Vientiane Capital Highest Elevation: 2,820 m. Average Elevation 200 m. Avg. Temp: 28 o C Main River: Mekong Lao Currency: Kip Economy: Electric, Tourism, Mining, Wood, Garment, Handicraft. Administration: 17 provinces ASEAN member: 23 July, 1997

3 DISASTER REVIEW On the June 2011, during the Rainy season in Laos in that time were have the stormy : Ropical storm Haima struck central and northern Laos on 24 June, with Nock-Ten hitting central and southern areas on 30 and 31 July was effect to : - More than 300,000 people were affected and 26 died in the two storms, which resulted in more than US$100 million in damages - More than 37,000 hectares of rice fields were damaged at a time when farmers were planting for the new season. This will affect harvests this year, with aid workers warning of long-term food distribution needs. Can See the picture at below:

4 VIET NAM Location Vietnam is part of South East Asia, bordered by ocean on the west and south, with China to the north and Cambodia and Laos to the west.vietnam is about 330,000 sq km, but shaped in a long, narrow "S". Population : 90 million. Capital : Hanoi.

13 What should we do?

14 BEFORE FLOOD -Always follow the information of flood. - Move all the furniture, livestock and fowls to higher places to avoid flood. -Protect clean water source, save up foods, drinking water, medicines and other necessities within 7 days.

15 BEFORE FLOOD -Get ready to evacuate from hollow areas and areas with land sliding and flash flooding dangers. - Save hotline telephone number in address book.

16 DURING AND AFTER FLOOD -Have the living power source off. - Move to higher and safer places. - No access to dangerous areas is permitted. - Life- jacket must be used when moving.

17 DURING AND AFTER FLOOD -Ensure food hygienne. - Protect the old and children. -Take part in eliminating epidemic diseases and solve environmental problems. - Check all the equiments carefully before using to ensure safety.

18 Goverment should: Design disaster prevention system (Potential Map, Influence area, Forecast, Monitoring & warning, Evacuation, Mitigation).

19 Disaster Management planning Efforts to do just that are under way, with the country's first national disaster management plan for being drafted by the NDMO, with financial and technical support from UNDP and the World Bank. The NDMO was established in 1999 to work on disaster preparedness, mitigation and response. It functions as the secretariat for the National Disaster Management Committee an inter-ministerial body responsible for formulating policy and coordination.

20 Cause flooding Flood hazard maps were developed for the most flood-prone river basins. - Located within the river basins are prone to flooding with different water levels. - The most common cause are structural problems such as insufficient and inadequate protection, poor functioning of water control gates, - Lack of pumping stations or mobile pumps to drain flood water and insufficient natural drain channels. - The ongoing deforestations and land degradation as well as
