Leonardo His Life Work "As a well-spent day brings happy sleep, so a life well spent brings a happy death" By: Matt Rickey and Jasmine Jones

Leonardo Da Vinci ( ) Leonardo was born on April 15, 1452 in the Tuscan hill town of Vinci, or also known as present day Province of Florence, Italy. Leonardo was the son of messer Piero Fruosino di Antonio da Vinci, and Caterina. Leonardo's father was a legal notary and his mother was a peasant

Life Leonardo da Vinci is not Leonardo's real name. Da Vinci simply means of Vinci. Leonardo's real name is "Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci." For Leonardo's first 5 years of his life he lived in hamlet of Anchiano in a home with his mother. Then in 1457 he lived in a household with his father, grandparents and uncle, Francesco. Leonardo's father was married 3 different times to very young girls from the age of 16 to 23.

Education - Between the ages of fifteen an eighteen, after he moved with his family to Florence, was apprenticed to one of the leading artists in the city- Andrea di Cione, called Verrocchio (true eye). - He showed genius in designing weapons, pumps, and all sorts of machines. - Most of his early education was self taught. - He probably learned geometry during his apprenticeship and worked with other students + artists of the time such as Sandro Botticelli, Cosimo Rosseli, Lorenzo di Credi.

Milan Leonardo continued work in Milan between 1482 and He was commissioned to paint the Virgin of the Rocks for the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception, and The Last Supper for the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie. While living in Milan between 1493 and 1495 Leonardo listed a woman called Caterina among his dependents in his taxation documents. When she died in 1495, the list of funeral expenditures suggests that she was his mother

Leonardo's Contributions to the "math world" Divine Proportione - Leonardo did not apply himself to higher mathematics-advanced geometry and arithmetic until he was 30 years old, when he began to study it with diligent tenacity. - Leonardo preferred drawing as his primary tool to execute his studies of proportionality and spatial awareness, which are used in his engineering designs. - An academic scholar that Leonardo studied traditional mathematics from and later worked with was Luca Pacioli whom Leonardo later contributed in producing a book with in the 1490's. Leonardo created drawings of geometrical shapes that had a mathematical significance in engraved plate form, which were to then to be used in printing presses. The work produced was published in 1509 an called the Divine Proportione. -Leonardo worked with 2D and 3D figures and their properties, visualized objects and described them. In the Vitruvian Man Leonardo demonstrates the

Interesting Facts Leonardo was a renaissance painter and he painted realistically and used light and dark colors. He painted figures without outlinig them. He used a style called "chiaroscurro" in which he used light and shadow to give his pictures a 3D effect. Most of his paintings are in Europe, and one in the United States. He would wear pink to make his complexion look fresher. Da Vinci studied philosophy, natural history, anatomy, biology, medicine, optics, acoustics, science, mathematics and hydraulics. He was the first Renaissance artist to take up industrial design. He produced aeriel maps for Cesare Borgia which are still accurate today. Leonardo is considered by many as the father of modern science. Leonardo sketched the first parachute, first helicopter, first aeroplane, first tank, first repeating rifle, swinging bridge, paddle boat and first motorcar. Leonardo was a vegetarian, for humanitarian reasons. He was left handed, dyslexic and wrote backwards sometimes using characters and abbreviated that he invented himself. He also dissected human cadavers.

illness Leonardo went to Rome in 1513 where he worked for Giuliano de' Medici and occupied rooms in the Belvedere Palace in the Vatican. The next two years involved much illness for the artist and he was often frustrated during this period. He experimented with flight a little by attempting to attach homemade wings to a lizard; other than this most of his time was spent working on geometric and optical puzzles or creating new types of art oils and varnishes. There is little evidence that Leonardo painted actively after he left Rome. In 1516 the move was made to France where Leonardo was to work for Francois I. The King provided him with lodgings in a house called Cloux which still stands and has been carefully restored. Though still able to draw Leonardo was already a very sick man and his right hand was partially paralysed due to a stroke. Most of his time was spent organizing his notebooks and the king didn't require he carry out commissions, though Leonardo had to suffer frequent royal visits and produce plans for festivals and plays. The king would enter the manor house of Cloux via a stretch of tunnel connected to the castle at Amboise. One of the items Leonardo made for him during this period was a mechanical lion with a breast that opened to reveal lilies.

Old Age From September 1513 to 1516, Leonardo spent his time living in the Belvedere in the Vactican in Rome. At this time Raphael and Michelangelo were both living there also at the time. Later Leonardo died at at Clos Luce where supposively the king held leonardo's head until he died in his arms
