1 Introduction Thank you for booking The Egyptian World: Museum Secrets, Mummies and Pyramids! session at The Manchester Museum. This interactive session combines work on the Egyptian Worlds gallery with object handling and investigation in the Discovery Centre. Duration: 90 minutes Level: Key Stage 2 N/C Links: Historical Interpretation Topics: Historical Enquiry A world history study: Ancient Egypt At a glance Session aims This session will provide your class with an opportunity to develop and apply their historical enquiry skills and knowledge of Ancient Egypt in the unique setting of the Manchester Museum. Through both object-based activities and gallery tasks, pupils will: Develop their enquiry and interpretation skills Solve a Raided Tomb Quest by identifying and reuniting objects that belonged to an Ancient Egyptian priestess. How to use this resource This resource pack has been designed to help you to integrate your Museum session into a larger scheme of work. To get the most from your session it is suggested that you read the pack before your visit. The sheets Itinerary and Before you Arrive contain important information that will help you to plan your visit. Please also familiarize yourself and the class with the details provided on the museum objects and object handling sheets in order to save time on the day.

2 Before you Arrive The following details will help you to prepare for your museum visit. Group sizes and numbers We are able to accommodate a maximum of 32 pupils per session and can offer two sessions simultaneously. Each session requires a minimum of 4 adult helpers* to accompany the group. We recommend that this is in addition to the class teacher (i.e. class teacher + 4 adult helpers per group): Because the adult helpers work closely with their groups throughout the session, this frees up the class teacher to float around the groups, take photographs and support the class as a whole. Please be advised that if a school does not bring 4 adults with the class, the museum staff will not be able to offer the full range of activities. If you have any questions about group numbers and adult supervision, please don t hesitate to contact our bookings co-ordinator on Adult helpers During the session, the class will be required to work in 4 smaller groups. In order to save time on the day, please split your class into 4 groups and allocate each group an adult helper before you arrive at the Museum. IMPORTANT: The session relies heavily on the involvement of the adult helpers. Adult helpers will be asked to remain with their groups throughout the session and should be prepared to both support and actively engage with pupils. Preparing for the day At The Manchester Museum we actively encourage the handling and investigation of real objects from our collections. You may find it useful to introduce the class to the different types of objects that they will encounter during the session, as detailed on the museum objects sheet. It is also useful to familiarise yourself and the class with the information and guidelines outlined on the object-handling sheet. If you are planning to spend time exploring the museum either before or after your session, we ask that you avoid going back into the Egyptian Worlds gallery during your free time in order to avoid disturbing other classes who will be using the gallery for a taught session. The primary learning coordinator is available to discuss any questions or concerns that you may have regarding this matter, either via Hannah-lee.chalk@manchester.ac.uk, on the phone or in person (contact Hannah Chalk to arrange an appointment).

3 Itinerary During the session, the class will complete a Raided Tomb Quest. Pupils will focus on finding objects that belonged to an Ancient Egyptian priestess, and reuniting them with their owner. The session involves two sets of tasks; Gallery Tasks and Discovery Centre Tasks. Gallery Tasks Detectives Warm-Up The class will start training to become Ancient Egyptian Detectives by exploring the Egyptian Worlds gallery. Groups will search for objects that are made from different materials before using clues to find a particular object. They will be asked to record their findings using notes and/or sketches. Asru and her objects Pupils will be introduced to our special mummy called Asru and will find out how we know so much about her. In their groups, pupils will use this information along with some more clues, to help them to find Asru s objects. The class will then gather together to share their findings with the rest of the class before reuniting Asru with her objects. Ancient Egypt over Time Pupils will be introduced to some of the key features and developments taking place in Ancient Egypt. Each group will be asked to locate the object that they found during the warm up, on a timeline of Ancient Egypt. Discovery Centre Tasks Exploring Asru s Objects Pupils will explore real Ancient Egyptian objects from the Museum s collections. Each group will work at a table and after handling the objects, they will be asked to identify which object belonged to Asru. The class will then gather together to share their choices and reasoning before reuniting Asru with her objects. Building Pyramids Working as a class, pupils will discuss the different styles of pyramid that developed over time. Using model blocks, the class will work together to construct their own pyramid. Mummification The class will discuss the mummification process. After considering the different steps that are involved in the process, they will be shown a crocodile mummy and x-ray images that revealed its rather surprising contents! Please note: Unfortunately, if you arrive at the museum late, it may be necessary to cut certain elements out of the session.

4 Museum Objects In the Museum, pupils will come across a variety of objects. We are often asked the following questions about the artefacts that are on display in the Museum: 1. Is it real? Questions and Answers Yes! The objects that are on display in the Egyptian Worlds gallery are all real. The objects that pupils will handle during the session are all real.* This means that the objects that the class will see and handle are very old and precious (see Object Handling sheet). * Pupils will encounter 1 replica object The Riqqeh Pectoral - during the Discovery Centre handling task. This is because the real thing on display in the new Discovering Archaeology gallery. You may want to look for this during any free time you may have scheduled in before or after the session. Information about the Pectoral and images are available online: 2. Why are there so many Ancient Egyptian artefacts in a museum in Manchester? Good question! The collection dates back to the 19 th and early 20 th centuries when the Manchester Museum helped to fund archaeological excavations in Egypt. In return for this, the Museum received a share of the finds. The Museum also received important material from a Manchester textile manufacturer called Jesse Haworth. Haworth donated his famous collection of Egyptian antiquities to the Manchester Museum and also paid for the Museum to be extended in Do you have anything from Tutankhamen s tomb here? Nearly everything from the tomb of Tutankhamen (including the famous funerary mask) was taken to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, where you can still see it today. Since its discovery in 1926, the mummy of Tutankhamen has rarely left its tomb (although in 2005 it was briefly removed for scientific study). 4. Where did all of the artefacts come from? Did you collect them? There are around 15,000 Ancient Egyptian artefacts in the Museum s collection. Many artefacts were collected by archaeologists during excavations supported by the Museum. Although Ancient Egypt continues to generate interest and curiosity, most of the Museum s artefacts were collected during the late 18 th and early 19 th centuries. In the 1980s the Egyptian government made it illegal to take any Ancient Egyptian objects out of the country.

5 Object Handling Here at the Manchester Museum we actively encourage all visits from school children to handle real objects from our collections. We believe in the explorative style of learning and value experiencing the unique ways to encourage young people in how to understand the world around them, both in the distant and recent past. This understanding we believe can be gained through handling real objects. Handling Rules In order to fully appreciate the handling time we kindly ask that your groups are familiar with the following handling rules below: Only one person should touch an object at a time. Why? Because it is safer for the object and it is better for the person who is touching the object. When instructed lift objects up carefully, with caution, using both hands. Why? If you use 2 hands, you will be less likely to drop it! Keep objects over handling trays at all times. All objects are placed on handling trays. The handling trays have a sheet of foam on them. The foam stops objects from rolling about. It also is a safe surface if an object is knocked over or dropped. Please do not walk around the space carrying any objects. Keep objects on or directly over trays Always walk over to the object you want to handle, do not reach across other objects. If you reach across you may knock something over Do not remove any objects from their cases You can still touch objects if they are in cases. Please do not remove them because they are fragile. Study the objects and enjoy the fantastic opportunity!
