4 Wizard of Oz Reading Comprehension Unit Teacher s Page Dear Teacher, This exciting unit will engage your students and strengthen their reading comprehension skills. It is directly aligned to the following Common Core standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.2.1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. CCSS.ELA Literacy.RL.3.1 Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers. CCSS.ELA Literacy.RL.4.1 Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. Notes on this unit: This unit is divided into 17 chapters which do not directly correspond to the original chapter divisions in the L. Frank Baum book. This unit is our own original condensation of the L. Frank Baum The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Suggestions for use: This unit is perfect for use in reading groups. Before reading each chapter, discuss any unfamiliar vocabulary words. After reading each chapter in class, you may want to assign the students to read the same chapter at home with their parents as homework, followed by completion of the comprehension questions. The questions should be reviewed together in class the following day. This unit will reinforce the skill of referring back to the text to find answers. I hope you and your students enjoy this Wizard of Oz Comprehension unit. 7 When Dorothy awoke the next morning the sun was shining through the trees and Toto had long been out chasing birds and squirrels. They left the cottage and walked through the trees until they found a little spring, where Dorothy drank and ate her breakfast. She had finished her meal, and was about to go back to the yellow brick road, when she was startled to hear a deep groan nearby. What was that? she asked. Just then they heard another groan. The sound seemed to come from behind them. They turned and walked through the forest a few steps when Dorothy discovered something shining in the trees. She ran to the place, and then stopped short, with a cry of surprise. One of the big trees had been partially chopped through, and standing beside it, with an uplifted axe in his hands, was a man made entirely of tin! His head and arms and legs were jointed onto his body, but he stood perfectly motionless, as if he could not move at all. Dorothy looked at him in amazement and asked, Did you groan? Yes, answered the tin man. I did. I ve been groaning for more than a year, and no one has ever heard me before or come to help me. What can I do for you? asked Dorothy. Get an oil can and oil my joints. They are rusted so badly that I cannot move them at all, he answered. You will find an oil can on a shelf in my cottage. SAMPLE 32
8 Dorothy returned from the cottage with the oil can. Where are your joints? she asked anxiously. Oil my neck first, replied the Tin Woodman. The Scarecrow took hold of the tin head and moved it gently from side to side until it worked freely. Now oil the joints in my arms, he said. Dorothy oiled them and the Scarecrow bent them carefully until they were quite free from rust and as good as new. The Tin Woodman gave a sigh of satisfaction and lowered his axe. They oiled his legs until he could move them freely. He thanked them again. I might have stood there forever if you had not come along, he said. So you have certainly saved my life. How did you happen to be here? We are on our way to the Emerald City, to see the great Oz, replied Dorothy. We stopped at your cottage to pass the night. Why do you want to see Oz? asked the Tin Woodman. I want him to send me back to Kansas, and the Scarecrow wants him to put brains into his head, she answered. The Tin Woodman thought deeply for a moment, and then said, Do you suppose Oz could give me a heart? Why, I guess so, Dorothy answered. It would be as easy to give you a heart as to give the Scarecrow brains. True, the Tin Woodman replied. So, if you will allow me to join your party, I will also go to the Emerald City and ask Oz to help me. Come along, said the Scarecrow, heartily, and Dorothy added that she would be pleased to have his company. The Tin Woodman shouldered his axe and they all passed through the forest until they came again to the yellow brick road. SAMPLE 33
9 The Tin Woodman asked Dorothy to put his oil can in her basket. If I should get caught in the rain, he said, and rust again, I would need that oil can badly. They continued on their journey and soon came to a place where the trees grew so thick over the road that they could not pass at all. But the Tin Woodman took his axe and chopped a passage for them. While they were walking through the forest, the Tin Woodman told the following story: I was born the son of a woodman who sold chopped wood for a living. When I grew up, I met a pretty Munchkin girl and fell in love with her -- with all my heart. She promised to marry me as soon as I could earn enough money to build a good house for her. But the old woman who lived with the Munchkin girl did not want her to marry anyone, because the old woman was lazy and wanted the girl to stay with her and do all the housework. The old woman went to the wicked Witch of the East, and promised her two sheep and a cow if she could prevent the marriage. So the wicked Witch enchanted my axe so that it would work against me. I was chopping away one day when the axe slipped and cut off my left leg. So I went to a tin-smith who made a new leg out of tin for me. The leg worked very well, but it angered the wicked Witch of the East because she had promised the old woman that I should not marry the pretty Munchkin girl. The next day, when I began chopping again, my axe slipped and cut off my right leg. The tin-smith made another leg for me. Later the enchanted axe cut off both my arms. Again, the tin-smith made new ones for me. The axe later cut off my head and I thought I was done for, but the tin-smith happened along and made me a new head out of tin. Finally my axe slipped again and split my body into two halves. The tin-smith made me a body out of tin and attached my tin arms, legs and head to it with joints. But, alas, I had no heart, so I lost all my love for the Munchkin girl. My body shone brightly in the sun. Now if my axe slipped it could not hurt me. However, one day I forgot to bring my oil can with me and I got caught in a rainstorm and my joints rusted. I was left to stand in the woods for a whole year until you came along. SAMPLE It was a terrible thing, the Tin Woodman continued, but during the year I stood there I had time to think. I decided that the greatest loss I had known was the loss of my heart. So now I am resolved to ask Oz to give me a new one. 34
10 Now Dorothy and the Scarecrow knew why the Tin Woodman was so anxious to get a new heart. All the same, said the Scarecrow, I shall ask for brains instead of a heart, for a fool would not know what to do with a heart if he had one. I shall take a heart, replied the Tin Woodman, for brains do not make one happy, and happiness is the best thing in the world. Dorothy was puzzled. She did not know which of her two friends was right. She thought if she could only get back to Kansas and Aunt Em it did not matter whether the Woodman or the Scarecrow was right. What worried Dorothy the most was that the bread in the basket was almost gone, and another meal for herself and Toto would empty the basket. She was glad that neither the Woodman nor the Scarecrow ever ate anything, but she was not made out of tin nor straw, and could not live unless she was fed. SAMPLE 35
