1 Lesson 35: Jesus Christ Heals the Sick and Blesses the Children

2 Purpose To teach the children that Jesus Christ loves each of us and to encourage them to experience joy by having faith in him.

3 Had I Been a Child 1. Had I been a child when Jesus came Unto the Nephites that blessed day And showed them the wounds in his hands and his feet And knelt with them to pray. 2. Then he might have held me safe in his arms; He might have looked in my eyes and said A word, with his blessing of kindness and love, His hands placed upon my head. 3. Someday, when the Savior comes again, Oh, how I hope that my heart will be As pure as the hearts of the children that day Who gathered around his knee. 5 You have all tasted salt in your lifetimes, haven t you?. Without using the words salt, salty, or any other form of the word salt, How would you explain what salt tastes like, to someone that has never tasted salt before.

6 Sometimes it is hard to describe things you have experienced in words others can understand

7 The Nephites had such great joy when Jesus Christ appeared to them that they said, No tongue can speak, neither can there be written by any man, neither can the hearts of men conceive so great and marvelous things as we both saw and heard (3 Nephi 17:17).

8 Tell the children that if they will picture in their minds the events they will hear in this lesson, they may be able to feel and understand with their spirits some truths that words cannot describe.

9 After teaching the people many things, Jesus told them to go home and think and pray about what he had said.

10 The Nephites began to cry. They did not want Jesus to leave yet.

11 Jesus loved the Nephites. He told them to bring the people who were sick or hurt to him so he could heal them.

12 Jesus healed these people. Everyone bowed down and worshiped him.

14 Jesus Christ told the Nephites to bring their little children to him The children sat on the ground near Jesus.

15 The Savior told the people to kneel down. Then he knelt and prayed to Heavenly Father.

16 It filled the Nephites with joy. The Savior s prayer was so marvelous that it could not be written.

17 After his prayer Jesus said the Nephites would be blessed because of their faith.

18 He felt so much love and happiness that he wept.

19 Then he took the children and blessed each one. He prayed to Heavenly Father for them and wept again.

20 Jesus told the Nephites to look at their children.

21 As the people watched, angels came down from heaven and encircled the children The children and the angels were surrounded by fire.

23 What did Jesus Christ say the people should do to help them understand the things he had taught them? (3 Nephi 17:3.) What does it mean to ponder? (To think deeply about something) Why is it important to ponder and pray about what we are taught by our Church leaders and teachers?

24 Where did the Savior say he was going after he visited the Nephites? (3 Nephi 17:4.) How does this show that Jesus loves all of Heavenly Father s children?

25 What did the people do when the Savior said he was leaving? (3 Nephi 17:5.) What did he do to show that he loved them? (3 Nephi 17:6 8.)

26 What did Jesus Christ say was the reason the people could be healed? (3 Nephi 17:8.) What is one reason miracles sometimes do not occur? (Ether 12:12, 18.)

32 President Ezra Taft Benson, thirteenth President of the Church, made this following statement: I promise you, dear children, that angels will minister unto you also. You may not see them, but they will be there to help you, and you will feel of their presence. Dear children, our Heavenly Father sent you to earth at this time because you are some of His most valiant children. He knew there would be much wickedness in the world today, and He knew you would be faithful and obedient (in Conference Report, Apr. 1989, p. 105; or Ensign, May 1989, p. 83). T

33 Let s read together 3 Nephi 17: And they arose from the earth, and he said unto them: Blessed are ye because of your faith. And a now behold, my joy is full. 21 And when he had said these words, he a wept, and the multitude bare record of it, and he took their little children, one by one, and b blessed them, and prayed unto the Father for them. What word or group of words from these verses that they think is important, and then have them share their feelings about the words they chose. T

34 Think about the times in their lives when they have been the happiest What were you doing to make you happy? Why are we happiest when we live like Jesus Taught? Why are you happiest with certain friends and family members? T

35 We naturally want to be with those whom we love and who love us. If we obey the commandments, we can live with Heavenly Father and Jesus and our families forever. This will give us the greatest joy we can experience. T

36 Because the Nephite people who gathered at Bountiful were not sufficiently prepared, the Savior could not tell them everything that Heavenly Father wanted them to know. What did Jesus ask the people to do? Read 3 Nephi 17:3 and fill in the following T

40 Testimony I Testify that Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father love all children and that if we have faith in Jesus Christ and obey the commandments, we will know the joy of living with them again.
